I've played Agricola before... and I have a 7-year old.
... I actually expected this to be simpler... it has kept much of the original game and it still seems complex for a kid.
I don't think the stuff left out is really that more complex. If I have to teach all this, I might as well teach building pastures in regular Agricola.

A little surprised this was overlooked in the review given this is the family edition, but any thoughts on how this plays with kids? I think the box says 8 and up. Does that seem about right?

Tom, how would you compare this vs. Stone Age or Lords of Waterdeep as a gateway worker placement game?

Stone Age is one of my favorite games

thanks for the review, I was looking forward to this review as I am thinking of getting a farm game for my family, Agricola and caverna is way to heavy for them.

Leaving aside the bounty and adventures mechanics of Caverna, what separates this Agricola version from Caverna? At least for me looks pretty similar ...

Would you consider it a step up from stone age? BTW, Thanks Tom and the dice tower family for your help finding great games to share with my family and friends. Really appreciate you all!

Cest82pr More of a step down, although I like it because I can play it with my kids and still enjoy it.

Agricola is my favorite game. My son is turning 8 this month. Could an 8 year old really play this???

I've played regular Agricola with my 8-year-old, so I would think this would work just fine with an 8-year-old.

Love your channel.... can you do a how to video on Agricola family addition as there are no good videos on it in English. Frustrated in playing as we’re not sure we’re playing right. Thx

So this is Agricola All Creatures Big and Small but with up to 4 people. This is a great idea for simpler family games so when the kids get older, you can show them the harder more complicated version :)

    • @JerRPGs

Not really. In AACBAS new spaces dont unlock as the game progresses. You also dont have to feed your people in AACBAS. This is basically the Family version of regular Agricola with a few tweaks and cleaner boards.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that part of it. lol

ACBAS has toooonnnsssss of buildings. No so much here I think.

Monkeyb00y Rumor is that Mayday is going to be releasing a new version of AACBAS.

    • @Monkeyb00y
      @Monkeyb00y 7 років тому

I've read that on a message board from Mayday, they will likely do a "big box" reprint of AACBAS which includes all of the expansions! Can't wait! :) I also can't wait to get Stone Age which also just got a reprinting recently. I have so many more to get. :-O

I think this looks more complex (and less thematic) then the original Agricola. I know the symbology should help things, but IMO it just makes the board look busy and overwhelming. And not having your own farm "board" you see slowly developing is a shame.

You DO have your own farming area.

When Tom said, "You can plant wheat everywhere," I seriously thought he said, "weed."

Which works better as a gateway game, this or Stoneage?

    • @TheMrE

I would look into this one and perhaps Lords of Waterdeep, they are more straightforward worker placement games.

I own both and I find Agricola: Family Edition a boring point salad. I enjoy Stone Age much more.

I have a copy of Z-Mann's print run of Agricola as well as Agricola on my phone (not to mention Bohnaza, Caverna, Patchwork and soon, A Feast for Odin). So I'd like to think I'm fairly familiar with Uwe's work. This may actually replace Agricola for me. I would still like to have some Occupations and what not for diversity. Maybe someone will make a fan expansion.

I played this solo with my 7 yr old daughter today (she chose the action for 1 meeple, and I controlled the other). She didn't want to farm animals for food, so we kept 1 sheep in the house and farmed wheat and made bread. She did enjoy it, but we got to turn 9 or 10 before she wanted to play something else. We ended with 3 wooden rooms, 3 meeples, 2 fields, and more wood and reeds than we knew what to do with. I am interested in getting this for the solo play, but since there's no random element, I'm worried that it will quickly lose its replay value once you hit on an optimal strategy.

This game is unbuttered toast. Very disappointed that Uwe would just slap his name on it for the bucks. Usually his involvement in a design can be taken as a seal of excellence but when it comes to Agricola: FE that is just not so.
At least ACBAS has interesting spatial restrictions while also threatening reductions in score if you do not diversify. There were also more crucial timing concerns on what you build and when, not to mention the many special buildings that modified the game in interesting ways.
This is Tokaido level point salad. It has no heart and soul at all. Your decisions are of virtually no consequence. You can do whatever you like, however you like and it lacks any real "engine building" aspect.
Feels like more of an activity for children than a game.
