    What are your favorite abstract "puzzly" games?

      Azul Summer Pavilion and Sagrada are my go to abstract puzzly games. And the newly added Calico! I’d love to try this one - it looks interesting.

      I would add Crystallo, but it's for solo play only. That being said, I just take turns with a co-player, so it works out!

      Nova Luna has grown on me very fast recently just after a few plays. Old love would be Reef, which just like you said that it feels very similar to Coatl in some way with pattern building and card scoring!

      We like Habitats and Nova Luna. I later found out Nova Luna is a "re-implementation" of Habitats. They are quite similar but they feel different.
      We also like all of the Azuls, though perhaps we like the latest version the most.
      I like Reef, but Karen is less enamored with it.
      We like Tybor and to us thats kind of puzzly, though not sure what the definition of a puzzly game is. what about Arboretum or Lanterns?

    I found your channel a couple of days ago. I just wanted to say that, along with "Watch It Played!", your channel is my new go-to to learn any game or decide if I wanna buy a game. It feels like I'm actually sitting at a table with some nice people and learning a game. Very relaxed and calming videos. I'm glad you don't edit out small bits of goofs and stutters (not that there are many) because it makes the videos feel less robotic and sometimes make me smile. Hope to see a lot more videos from you guys.

    Hey folks at Before You Play, you both are so incredibly charming! I love the way you clearly and concisely explain the rules with a methodical set-up and flow, yet you have it interspersed with fun banter that helps the video stay lively and entertaining. Great job!

    I own Reef (I prefer this game more than any Azul) and I've already bought Cóatl. I was thinking about the differences between Reef and Cóatl and I found two at least: the way you get the pieces (in Reef you could get any piece you want if you have the right card for it but in Cóatl you have to pay attention to one limited offer as Azul) and how you do combos with cards (in Reef you just score one card for pattern but in Cóatl you could score maximum 5 cards between prophecy cards and one temple card). Maybe there are more differences.
    Anyway I think Reef and Cóatl are compatible in one boardgame collection. Great video as usual. Greetings from Spain.

    16:34 Is this correct? I didn`t think the cards required specific parts, so 3 head, tail or body would be OK not just 3 body parts.

    • @BeforeYouPlay
      @BeforeYouPlay  4 роки тому

      You are correct! Naveen may have misspoke when he said "body segments." The parts on the card can pertain to the head and/or tail as long as it follows the configuration. Thanks!

    Just got the game this week and I am so happy with our purchase. :) It's so much fun. My only complaint is the flimsy player boards and the card wells that don't hold sleeved cards well.

    Wonderful explanation of the rules.😁 Really nice organised overhead of the game table. 😎😁 I really enjoyed watching you two play and explain what you were doing on your turns. 🤗😎😀 The only thing I could not see the art on the cards or what they say so maybe zoom in during rules explanation. 😉 I don't know how the overhead of the game table could improve but it was really great help that you explained each card so great job ! Nice review so the whole package really thourough👍 Thumbs up and I subscribed and I hope to see more games explained and played. 👏 🤗😀

    • @BeforeYouPlay
      @BeforeYouPlay  3 роки тому +1

      Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching! This one is fun, but out of those three definitely Calico, and then maybe Coatl. That’s a tough choice. Overboss is much simpler so maybe it would depend on who were playing with haha.

      Tried this game on Tabletopia - it's fun and very simple but definitely doesn't have the kind of deep strategy Azul has. With that said, kids could totally play this and have a great time!

    Am I the only one who wants to know what kind of a team gets assembled when creating a board game? The amount that you can research not only to get things historically correct, but to add a stronger theme to your game, is overwhelming. It is honestly amazing the small things we don't realize about in games like this. Or maybe I'm just hoping my Art History degree can be used to get on some game development. 😭

    • @etiennesan
      @etiennesan 4 роки тому +14

      We put a lot of effort on the historical theme. All the Gods illustrated on the cards are real ones, but there was no space in the rulebook to talk about them! If you want to know, look at this!
      Yellow God : Huitzilopochtli (God of the Sun and War)
      Green God : Quetzalcoatl (God of Knowledge and Wind)
      Blue God : Tlaloc (God of Rain and Water)
      Red Godess : Coatlicue (Godess of Life and Fertility)
      Black Godess : Mictecacihuatl (Queen of Mictlan, sort of Hell...)
      Temple Cards : Templo Mayor, the temples at Tenochtitlan (Mexico nowadays)
      Had fun researching this theme, I really love history, I have a Master in History!

    • @olloplays
      @olloplays 4 роки тому +4

      @@etiennesan I feel like this isn't talked about enough in the industry. Just how much you go into researching for the art, theme, gameplay when a historical aspect is included in a game and making sure it's fairly depicted and still fun.
      Thank you for sharing all the deities you included in the game. I am sad that they couldn't be included in the rules, but understand. I will be working on my Master in Art History next year and I have a fond place in my heart for pre-colonial Latin American art. These past few years the Mesoamerica theme has been great in gaming. :) Thanks for adding to that!

      @@olloplays Normally, a project like this is born of personal interest/knowledge on a topic. I would hardly think someone would go out of their way to try and create a game on a topic they know nothing about! I'm sure it has happened, and it has been a learning experience for those involved.. but passion is always born from somewhere.
