  • In celebration of the Pleased to Meet Me Deluxe Edition, the Life of the Record podcast looks back at the unique circumstances around how the record was created.
Bob Mehr, author of Trouble Boys: The True Story of the Replacements, offers a detailed perspective of this uncertain period when the Replacements entered Ardent Studios after splitting with guitarist Bob Stinson. Luther Dickinson, son of the late producer, Jim Dickinson, reflects on his father’s contribution to the album, as well as his own experience of joining the band in the studio as a teenager. Additionally, we’ll hear from Paul Westerberg himself, in a 1987 Warner Bros. interview with Julie Panebianco, where he shares his thoughts on the writing and recording of Pleased to Meet Me.
From alcohol-fueled and trick-filled sessions in Memphis to the controversy of using horns and strings to the existential conflict of being an underground rock band in a major label world, the episode offers a unique look at this pivotal moment in the Replacements’ history.

'Can't Hardly Wait' is my favourite Replacements' song. Absolutely no idea how it did not become absolutely huge. The melody is just utterly superb. However I love the loud stuff and the loose stuff. It's just that melody is amazing.

I have an album that has the same interviews with Paul featured in this video. It's an LP where Paul speaks between samples of each song. It's stamped promotional use only. I picked it up at a used record shop years ago.

This is such an amazing “making of“ podcast, expertly edited, beautifully paced, coherent, structured well, with just the right amount of actual songs, and successful in that it’s fully reminded me of what an amazing experience it was falling in love with this record 30 years ago.
So many podcasts/UA-cam documentaries about great albums, while admirable in their intention, end up a mess, don’t have any source music, and are filled with rambling, incoherently written narratives. This is an exception. Great work!

I didn't really Follow The Replacements in the eighties but a friend of mine convinced me to buy please to meet me which I did and thought was an absolutely slamming rock and roll record in 1987 my biggest regret was not going to see them play at the Fillmore in 1988 the show that Billie Joe Armstrong has stated changed his life

This was a fantastic listen. PTMM was what got me into the band way back then, and is still my favorite album of theirs. Thanks for posting!

yes,yes , yes...I walked in my door in '86 hearing "never mind" and thought: my sound, my friends, there is someone who feels like me!

Love how raw Paul's vocals are on that track. Pleased to Meet Me has very slick production, but it's still got plenty of attitude.

Neither of them give many interviews. I'm sure they're tired of talking about a band that broke up thirty five years ago

Admirable Tommy fired his brother? He died a few years later because of it. Even though Bob gave Tommy the job saving him from a life of delinquency and crime.

this was the last true band effort before paul became it's lone direction. i do wonder how cool it may have been for chilton to take bob's spot but i think paul had too much deference to invite him.

I think Alex taking Bob's spot would have been a HORRIBLE idea, almost as bad of an idea of having Slim take Bob's spot
