Joanna Caroline Newsom is an American singer-songwriter and actress. Born and raised in Northern California, Newsom was classically trained on the harp in her youth and began her musical career as a keyboardist in the San Francisco-based indie band the Pleased.
Leaving the City is a song by Joanna Newsom, an American singer-songwriter and harpist. It is the third track on her fourth studio album, Divers, which was released in 2015. The song features Newsom playing the harp, piano, marxophone, and mellotron, accompanied by drums played by her brother, Peter Newsom.

To me Joanna is one of the only vocalists out there right now who has found a way to communicate her story with 100% clarity. She's not classically trained, she doesn't conform to current standards of what a "good voice" sounds like, she doesn't care if people think she's weird or even unlistenable. She knows what she's saying and her body is helping her convey it. I've been obsessed with her for some time now and I'm delighted to see her make an appearance on your channel, Beth! Her music is the most honest and emotional I've ever heard, to the point where if I'm in a place in my life where I just need to hear Truth, I turn on Joanna Newsom. She's gotten me through some immensely difficult times and I can't wait for her to release new music (hopefully by next year!) I'd love to see you react to some more of her music, maybe Sapokanican or Baby Birch (but prepare to cry). Loved this video!!!

Yep for a alot of people her voice is unlistenable but I saw her live. I was barely ten meters in front of her, first raw, lucky me and I was never be such mesmerised by an artist maybe a human being. she's so unique and graceful.she's a gift of God.

I saw here at the Larimer Lounge in Denver in 2004 and she drove up in a Subaru Forester with the harp strapped to the top. She had a custom California license place that said "4goneho" and I still think about that to this day... I have no idea what it meant.
This song is about DEATH. Yeah, she’s leaving the city with her lover, but zoomed out it’s about the short time we’re given with this life. This whole album is about death and time and what it means when you live a life filled with love and suddenly it’s over. Is love immortal? Is time a symptom of love or is love a symptom of time?
I adore what she said about her relationship with Andy, something to the effect of "I've never been so afraid of death, because I met someone I just can't bear to lose"

The uniqueness of her voice makes her easily identifiable as an artist in the same way as Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young are not mistaken for someone else when they sing, if that makes any sense. 😂 Love your music and your reactions. 🙏✌️
Understatement
Bob Dylan, yes… except for “Lay, Lady, Lay.” When I first heard that song, I thought it was Mac Davis.
Something that occurs to me about her closing the air flow on those consonants and why it seems to work for her, is how much it sort of complements, or maybe even imitates, the sound of plucking strings on the harp. (I just noticed that even the word "pluck" is practically, if not literally, onomatopoeia.) Like a buildup of tension which is suddenly and carefully released in a small, controlled burst, somehow both sharp and delicate simultaneously. But then the harp also has that rich warmth which counters her nasality. So I think it's kind of these contradictory or contrasting qualities make her really interesting to listen to. She is always so in control even when veering off into less "stable" sounding territory.
So true! I find that a lot with instrumentalists - singers often sound like the instrument they play!
Joanna's voice took me a while to get used to when I first discovered her, it's very unique and can even be really shrill and piercing at times. The sheer heart and emotion in her singing combined with the beautiful poetry of her lyrics and her fantastic skill as a composer won me over eventually, and she became my favorite contemporary musician. Still holding my breath for another album from her, it's been a good few years since her last one but I know she got married and had a baby so she doesn't have as much time on her hands for music these days
She played a secret surprise show in March this year at the Belasco in L.A. During the show she played new music and said she’d been working on a new album!
She’s going to be playing at the Kilby Block Party music festival this next May! Hopefully more tour dates are to come 🤞
Joanna is my favorite ever 💖 her unusual style really scratches an itch in my brain and she just wouldn't be as special if she followed conventions and sounded like everyone else out there
Joanna is fantastic. She is good example of artists that prefer creativity rather than sounding "correct". If you look at genres like Neofolk, Post-punk, Synth-pop and similar genres there is a similar trend. The big difference with Joanna is the she somehow got very well known, not sure how that happened as both her voice and the overall songs aren't really catchy or radio friendly. I guess Björk is also a good example of that.

Agreed, I'm a bit perplexed by it as well but if if I had to guess why she rode to fame might be the millenial dominance of the 2010s. Alot of the music swapping culture we had/have.
I've been meaning to give this a second listen after I checked it out last week so I figured now, with your commentary, would be perfect for that and I certainly wasn't wrong! I learned so much about the way she creates sound with her voice and many of the topics you brought up have me contextualizing my understanding of the composition of it, particularly the 3:4 polymetric section with the closed consonant sounds. The whole idea of using the repetitive harsh consonant sounds in the vocals to create a second rhythmic layer against the moving staccato harp line is genius. It's like a hidden hocket that I didn't hear until you mentioned her vocal technique there.
I'm more in awe than ever at how she does all of this at one time without dropping a single note 👀

I like her song writing. It’s more classical versus verse-chorus-verse-chorus+bridge etc.
The way to reference songwriting like this is "linear" btw, as in, instead of doing things in repeating chunks, the songs rather follow a through-line beginning to end. My music is written much the same way, and I definitely prefer it, because it feels more communicative.
her creativity in songwriting combined with her absolut phenomenal harp-skills makes her outstanding. to memorize all those epic lyrics is just wow.
her lyrics are like a painting by hieronymus bosh, like a distant childhood memory, warm and wonderful. i'm not always in the mood for her voice, but when i am it's unstoppable.
if she had trained away all those little specialities it wouldn't be that unique anymore.
my favourit is sawdust and diamonds from that november 2006 live performance.
i'm stll waiting for another eivor-reaction. i cannot understand why she is featured just once, being one of the best vocalists of our time.

If you want another great Joanna Newsom live performance, Peach, Plum, Pear (specifically look for the video labelled Paris 31.05.2010) is exceptional. One of those live performances that sounds better than the studio version
Joanna is so unique, her voice, the music that she makes, her lyrics that she builds with all that metaphors and game of words, I am not a English speaker, not my mother tongue, and I've been learning so much with her, since I discovered her, she becomes easily one of my favourites artist.

Love Joanna’s words and her vocal style. Her voice has actually become a lot more tame as I believe she had a surgery because she damaged her voice but if you listen to her vocals especially on her second album they are a lot more experimental. 
She actually didn't have surgery, for some reason this gets repeated a lot, but she did get nodules and instead just went on complete vocal rest for a few months where she didn't speak and carried around a white board to communicate

her folk and lyrical momentum is similar to bob dylan in songs like "The lonesome murder of hattie carol" and "Mr. Tamborine man", its almost spitting bars like a rap artist mixed with someone who slowed down her yodel. Try listening to "Monkey and Bear" by Joanna in your own time. Its long but its one of her truly best works in my opinion.
Her voice is so so beautiful to me. Also her talent for writing lyrics in english is unmatched. I think shes perfect just like this, doesn't need training to conform or change to be appreciated
I'm a big Joanna Newsom fan, her voice or vocal style has changed so much over her albums, I enjoy that. Kingfisher from Have One on Me and Anecdotes from Divers are constant favourites of mine.

my favourite artist of all time! great analysis of her voice, i see to many people jumping to a "unique = bad" conclusion. she has a unique and gorgeous voice that she uses to complement her incredible music and lyrics. she only started singing to record her first ep when she was a young adult, and about ten years later she got vocal nodes. :)
This has always been one of my very favourite live performances in the BBC archives. So much better than the over-produced studio version, just her and her harp. So captivating

Haha. We'll it definitely isn't what most people would aim for! Doesn't stop it being valid or in fact, beautiful :) But at the end of the day, it's all a matter of personal taste.
Her sound is from the 16th century. I feel this singing style would fit Beth Roars.
My first thought was that if Carol Kane (played the old lady in Princess Bride, opposite Billy Crystal) sang, it could sound like that. And if you have never seen that movie, SEE IT! One of the best movies ever made. Elwes does an absolutely fantastic job, as do several others. Seriously folks, don't miss it...guaranteed it will become a favorite. Great movie for kids, as well. Definitely in my top ten list. Traditional Asian singers also tend more toward that nasal sound. I think the best word for the 'incorrect' that you might have chosen (if you thought about it for several seconds, like I did) was unconventional.
I really like your positivity, but one thing I would like to point out, and I do it too, is when you put your music out, stop with the "people won't like this" kind of thing. Be positive about your output, as well, because IMO it is very good. I can really hear your knowledge of the mechanics of singing when you sing. It is beautiful (dammit :-) ). You've worked for and perfected it, so OWN it. And frankly, even if nobody liked it but you, and you can see in the comments that isn't remotely true, it would be fine in terms of worth. Sales wise, it's good if others like it, which they do.

Such a unique artist! Thanks for covering her. I was thinking that her tone was like a combination of Bjork and Cyndi Lauper but her annunciation and diction is so intentional. Her control of all of that is actual quite difficult to reproduce I would bet. She also reminded me of a rapper like Eminem with the rapid, percussive use of the lyrics and the tones she's chosen to deliver those in when all the words are bunched up and being brought together. The breathier parts in between when the lyrics slow down really show how controlled the rest of it is and how capable she is of manipulating sound. Fabulous!

Joanna Newsom is definitely an acquired taste. Her vocal style certainly stands out from the crowd.
Well if her voice is "untrainable", then thank god because her music is so far beyond 99% of what is out there.

To me this is like saying that picasso is untrainable because he doesn't make photorealistic still life paintings. Joanna is making deliberate stylistic choices which not everyone will like, which is ok and expected. Certainly more interesting than if the only music made was inoffensive but technically perfect.

There seems to be this misconception in many of the comments that having effective vocal technique is somehow Counter to an artists uniqueness or counter to their originality and creativity. This is false. Bad technique is limiting. Good technique supports an artists uniqueness and creativity and helps them get across even more of what they want to.

😳 I'm sorry. She is a good musician....and I think she may be clever in her songwriting...and I can see a part on Broadway in a musical...but, damn...I just can't peg the voice. That's ok...not my decision. Nice try.
Is it true she has destroyed her voice by singing like this.
No, she developed vocal nodules somewhere around 2009-ish (I think) and had to go on complete vocal rest for a few months after which she fully recovered. It's worth noting that even classically trained professionals get vocal nodules from overstraining or not taking proper care of their voice. She's talked about how she then worked with a vocal coach to make sure she wouldn't damage it again, mainly learning how to warm up with scales and stuff. But that was almost 15 years ago; she has been singing in her typical style since then without issues it seems, and this video was from 2015, so it had nothing to do with "singing like this" specifically.
