      What's your question?

    • @carultch
      @carultch Рік тому

      @@appletree8441 I think the question is whether the OP is about tourists being legally allowed to drive in Canada.
      It doesn't matter which side of the road your home country drives upon. Anyone who is legally in the country as a tourist, with a valid driver's license from their home country, is allowed to drive in the US and Canada. It is just as easy for British tourists to legally be able to drive in Canada, as it is for French tourists to legally be able to drive in Canada. The onus is on you to train yourself for right-handed traffic, and adapt to everyone else.

    Okay new drivers, and drivers with experience, Yes in that video i will agree the amount of drivers blew the stop sign with-out complete stop need ticket, the cost of rolling stop sign is expensive, and possibly the court may give you 2-3 points on that. And in that video i'm shocked he never mentioned sharing the Road with Funeral procession. Common The laws do say you have to Stop or pull over bit and let it pass, and Honor the last respects of the person in the Hearse and show your respects to them even you don't know them. And School buses also you have to stop for them 20 ft away for safety, If you get caught blowing those flashing school bus RED LIGHTS that's tough ticket you will pay, along with Hefty Fine and Sweet 3- points or more if the judge warrants that. Drive safe this summer ladies and gent's.

    Halifax was designed in 1749 and hasn't changed much.. can be interesting in a car and more so in a 45 foot motorcoach. A lot of uphill and downhill one way streets and sharp left or rights with parking to the corners corners. Can be nerve racking! Left turns with a car up to the line to your left can be fun with a building on the corner diagonally across from you.

    • @smartdrivetest

      Hi Paul - Halifax, NS, Canada is a perfect example. And yes, getting big vehicles around these urban centres is challenging to say the least with corners and hills. Boston, MA, USA was similar. If you're in the old colonial part of the city, some of the streets just end at a building with no warning. Yes, these cities did NOT grow up with the motor-car like Los Angeles. Hello sir, you may not remember me. My name is johndoe and I was in the live chat on your UA-cam live stream this last Sunday on 7/21/2019. My question was about extending my DL from every 2 years to every 3 years because of the retinopathy because of diabetes. Even though its stabilized, I wasn't able to convince my examiner to extend it to 3 or 5 years. the DMV wasn't willing to take the risk, even though my driving record is spotless. Oh, excuse me, I live in San Diego, California and I go to the El Cajon DMV Field Office. But, I passed my behind The Wheel Test on Tuesday, July 23, 219 with only 3 points lost out of 20 allowed. Its all because you showed us how to drive properly. So, I say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I performed the best backup maneuver ever and its based on your parallel parking video where you chose refernce points around your car to position yourself ! For all new drivers.
    In most parts of Canada and the USA you can turn right on a red light.
    If this is the case treat it as a stop intersection don’t just turn.
    Come up to the line STOP and observe before proceeding, as if you just turn right immediately another vehicle might be speeding through.
    Do the turn safely and don’t forget your mirrors and lifesaver shoulder check before turning in case a cyclist is turning with you.
    Be safe and have fun

    I've been watching a lot of your videos to help me understand as many road rules as possible since my driving manual didn't really explain much. You've been a great help! But I wanted to ask a question. You said that if two cars meet at an uncontrolled intersection, whichever one is going straight has the right-of--way, but I learned that that only counts if both cars are on opposing sides. Does the placement of the cars matter in the uncontrolled intersection matter, or does the car going straight always receive right-of-way?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 років тому +1

      Hi Panicatthechemicaldance - Thank you for your query. Basic rules of the road: major road over the minor road; straight through over turning vehicles; and right turning vehicles over left turning. And keep in mind that 2-way stops are different than 4-way stops. So at an uncontrolled intersection, the straight through car most likely has the right-of-way. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    I failed my class 5 road test today at Maple Ridge on a left turn on two way stop. I was at the STOP sign waiting for the through traffic to clear and there were two cars opposite to me at the stop sign. Both of those cars were were turning right. As through traffic cleared one car from the opposite side made the right turn. As i was scanning the road for any through traffic before i turn left behind the first car, my examiner told me "go go, it's your right of way". I then turned left. She marked that mistake as a " Danger action- not sure of right of way/impeding traffic". There was no car behind me.
    I'm still confused for right of way in this situation. Should i wait for all the cars on opposite side waiting to turn right before i turn left or should i go after the first car turns right.

      Hi AJMER SINGH - Thank you for your reply. And that my friend is a difficult traffic situation. From a strict point of view on the right-of-way, the 2 cars that were turning right had the right-of-way. However, if there was a sufficient time between the first car turning right, and the second vehicle moving up to the intersection, you could have gone. I suspect that the examiner wanted you to do the later option. Unfortunately, for many new drivers, like you, they would error on the side of caution and wait for the second vehicle to turn right. I'm going to talk about this topic in tomorrow's live stream, and use your situation as a case study. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Know that driving and taking a road test are two completely different tasks. There are so many skills and techniques that are required for a road test that 90% of current drivers with a license would not be successful on a driver's test. As the others have said, use it has a learning experience--or a driving lesson--and do it again. There is no doubt in mm mind that you can pass the test. Hi Venkatraman Natarajan - Thank you for your response. Yes, you can have an uncontrolled intersection on a major road. It depends where you are as the driver. If you're on the major road and turning onto a minor road, you are at an uncontrolled intersection. See this video: ua-cam.com/video/8XHQSnjbiJU/v-deo.html The vehicles turning from the left-centre turning lane are turning from a "technically" uncontrolled intersection. Hi, Rick! Thank you for the great videos. If a driver #1 was at an intersection waiting for an opportunity to turn left. At the same time, another driver #2 was coming from the far right and was also trying to turn left to take the road next to driver #1 (both intersected roads are two directions). Which driver has the right to do the left turn first? I once saw this situation and both drivers tried to take advantage the same opportunity and they almost collide, but because driver 1 stopped (even though he was @ the stop sign first) accident was avoided. What should I do if I were in a similar situation? Thank you!

    • @carultch
      @carultch 2 роки тому

      Interesting question. Since you generally turn left, from the left-most lane, I would expect that Driver #1 should have the right-of-way to turn left first. Driver #2 is in an awkward position to turn left, and would need a greater amount of time to clear the intersection. This assumes that both drivers arrive at the stop sign simultaneously. This would apply if they arrive on the same side and are trying to turn to the same destination lane, or opposite sides and would have to turn across each other.
      When two left-turners approach each other in opposite directions, they can both complete the turn simultaneously, provided that they both start from the left-most lane in their respective directions. But if one driver is way off to the right, that is extra time needed to clear the intersection.
      The typical rule for how to determine right-of-way at an all way stop:
      1. whomever arrives first, has right of way
      2. whomever arrives on the right (regardless of which side of the road the country drives upon), has right of way.
      3. whomever has the simplest maneuver to clear the intersection, has right-of-way, over another driver who has the more complicated turn. Straight has priority over left turns; right turns have priority over left, in the rare event that they would conflict. U-turners have last priority.

    Hi Rick, I'm taking a road test in Texas later today (so this is a very last minute question).... the most confusing All Stop intersection for me is when all four directions have multiple lanes (2 lanes or more). let say the car on my right driving in the same direction as me reach the stop line before me. As I approach the same stop line a car from the opposite direction reaches his/her stop line after the car on my right but before me. In that moment, all three vehicles would stop at the stop lines. It's clear that the car on my right has the right of way since he/she reached the stop line first. Question is, can I proceed at the same time with the car on my right (since no cars from other directions can proceed) or should I wait my turn?

      @@smartdrivetest Thanks for the vid. It has a nice solution for those 4-way stop intersections and their "rolling stops:" mini-roundabouts just like in the UK and Australia. Of course, we call them traffic calming circles here in the US. Put one at each 4-way stop and make it a 4-way yield, and the intersection will be safer and motorist frustration decreased.

      Hi Edward Miessner - Thank you for your response. Yes, unfortunately, authorities in North America have given roundabouts many names, which I think leads to confusion amongst motorists. What do you do when you're behind a big truck at an intersection, and you cannot see the traffic lights? A small car behind a truck is at a real disadvantage because you can't see the light and a lot of the traffic is also blocked from sight. I've seen people just trustingly follow the truck into the intersection without so much as a pause to look around first. Somehow that seems wrong to me.

      The right-turner would have the right of way, in the event that a left turner and right turner both have the same destination lane. This applies in right-hand traffic countries.
      Generally, if both vehicles arrive on opposite sides of a stop simultaneously, and would conflict with one another: whomever has the simplest maneuver in the intersection, would have right of way. If both maneuvers can be completed without a conflict (straight and straight, or left and left), they can proceed at the same time.

    I will pass my test !!!!! I can drive easy but THE ONLY ISSUE I NOTICE is I DONT look at a stop sign on my right ( people walking ) but now I have it stuck in my mind. No matter what if I am moving to a other lane or have to move the car for whatever reason to check my mirrors also for intersections I don’t look to my right or left

    I have a question. Today on my way to work I was driving on a road with part uncontrolled and controlled intersections. I was driving by a green light so I knew I had the right of way. While passing a green light, I noticed there was a car on my right trying to go across the uncontrolled intersection on its side,but it look like it went forward too much to the point where its bumper would have hit me when passing the green light. I honked for him or her to move back a bit, and there were too many cars on my Left passing through to let me get by so I stopped and waited for them to move back for me to resume. I heard a car in the back honk .What could I have done differently in this situation? Did I overreact?

      @smartdrivetest  7 років тому

      Hi Christine - thank you for your comment. From your explanation you responded correctly. When in doubt, simply stop. Too many drivers plow forward and then get into a crash. The vehicle behind you that honked probably couldn't see the vehicle encroaching into the intersection and was just being a goof! You displayed the actions of a smart driver and focused on what you were doing, which is awesome. And you are most welcome. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    can you please make informative visual representation of road rules for 2019. to many boring videos and i have short term memory lose so visuals is how i remember. please and thank you. also what location is this in?

      @smartdrivetest  5 років тому +1

      Hi sally smith - Thank you for your query. We're in Canada my friend, but the rules-of-the-road are the same for the most part. Basic general rules - major road over minor road; straight through traffic over turning traffic; right-turning vehicle over left turning vehicles. And know that 2-way stops are different then 4-way stops. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    i have a question. if it is a t junction and i intend to make a left turn, and i am on the vertical road, and there is a vehicle on the horizantal road who wants to make a left turn onto the road i am stopped on, who has the right of way?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 років тому

      Hi Nargis Chogle - thank you for your comment. The vehicle on main road--horizontal road--has the right-of-way. You have to wait for that driver to complete his/her turn. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Hey Rick! I have my driving test on May 8th and I have a question on 4 way stop. If you stop at the same time with another car (on the same street) and they roll the stop do you continue after them when you come to a complete stop? It usually takes a bit for the car to cross the street and people will probably wait for you to go since you stopped at the same time with the other car. What do you do in a scenario like that?

    • @carultch
      @carultch Рік тому

      Come to a complete stop, independently of the car in front of you. Wait for all incumbent traffic to clear the intersection. Then proceed according to your right-of-way relative to other traffic.

    Hi please i need to verify, On two opposing stop signs, a vehicle that would turn left comes and stops first but couldnt make a turn coz the main road is busy. Then another vehicle on the other side of the road that has stop sign too, a vehicle that wants to go straight comes. Now there is a break in the traffic. Who goes first? the left turner or the straight one? thanks

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 років тому +1

      Hi Justin - Thank you for your comment and query. The straight through traffic has the right-of-way and would proceed. Have a look at this video: ua-cam.com/video/wPUPciPP46c/v-deo.htmlm7s If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

      Thanks so much Rick you cleared my confusion.What if there are cars lined up behind the car going straight and they all want to proceed straight too. I had this happen to me, I was a left turner and I was waiting for all of them to proceed whenever there is traffic break on the main road.The cars behind me start honking at me
      I had a long line of cars behind me too.After a few cars proceeding straight, A courteous guy waved at me to go ahead and do my turn.
      What would you do If you were me? The intersection was very long and wide.Thanks so much.Appreciate your help a lot

      Justin Lopez I think the car behind the car that’s going straight has to move up a bit But Stop. So after the 1st car goes straight, I think it’s ur turn to go..I think ur question was answered at 18:02

    • @darrenmcnew

      Justin Lopez @ around 16:33. He answered a question that has been bugging me for a long time and happened again tonight. At a two way stop, I’m sitting at the sign waiting patiently to turn left. Cross traffic is heavy. Then as it starts to clear, another car opposite approaches and has his right turn signal and angles his car that way. So, we are both turning the same direction, however, I was there probably at least a minute before they were. As soon as traffic cleared, I went, but so did he. Thankfully they stopped to let me proceed since I was in the middle of the road, but I cannot tell you how many times this happens weekly. Drives me crazy.

    Hi, Rick! Thanks for the video - it's very useful. But one thing is not clear to me - who has the right of way on an intersection without any stop/yield signs from either side. I know that in most of the Europe (as well in AU and NZ) the general rule for such intersections is that the vehicle on the left must yield to the vehicle on the right. Is there any similar rule in US/Canada?
    Who should give way when two vehicles meet on a parking lot or any other road crossings without any control devices like signs/lights?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 років тому

      Hi Shocker1506 - thank you for your comment and excellent query. This comes back to the saying, "the right-of-way" is never taken, the right-of-way is always given." And yes, you are correct, it is the vehicle that arrives first, or the vehicle on the right - the vehicle on the left in the UK, Malaysia and other countries that drive on the left. If there aren't any control devices, it is best to simply give the right-of-way to other traffic if you're unsure, or take turns as is done at 4-way STOP intersections: ua-cam.com/video/RVgSNkvl9jE/v-deo.html If there's anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    SIR I HAVE SOME QUESTION ABOUT Priority to the right at intersection ^^ IN KOREA TRAFFIC HISTORY IS SHORT.
    I HOPE I CAN FIND REASON OF reason of Priority to the right at intersection AND ORIGIN(?) OF Priority to the right at intersection.
    SO MANY PEOPLE SAY WE DO BECAUSE IT IS LAW ^^ BEST REGARDS

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 років тому +1

      Hi LEE JOONGTAEK - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment and query. The reason for the priority to the right--when we drive on the right side of the road--is to facilitate traffic flow. Because vehicle have a shorter distance to travel, these can clear the intersection first, therefore we give priority to these vehicles so they can clear the intersection first and then other traffic can proceed. Separating traffic on the right or left side of the road came about during the industrial revolution owing to the increased amounts of traffic on roadways in urban areas. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
