Quit smoking, married a hot wife, became a better person to yourself and others around you. I'd say the last 10 years are improvements, just saying. Keep it going... You're just scratching the surface in life. Proud of you, and I enjoy all the old school video game stories. Those were the days, in fact, those were the best days for me, as a kid. Thank you, for bringing good memories back!
I wanna see a UA-cam fighting game where I can choose either Cancer Johnny or Healthy Johnny. Like they'd be different costumes for the HCG character or whatnot. But anyway, congrats! I remember watching some of those older videos because there really wasn't anything else out there on our beloved Sega games. People only wanted to talk about the NES. But you bucked that trend, thank god.
You look so much healthier Johnny =D It's good looking back like this, makes you realise what a great decision you made, both quiting smoking and doing UA-cam =D
Thank you for offering informative commentary that is actually interesting to listen to instead of being like every UA-camr "CRINGING" at every first video.
“Can you believe I’m the same person?” I remember you made a video about smoking and rpgs before showing your old self but I didn’t see your old opening until this video, but it’s super familiar. I think I used to watch a few of your old vids back in the day way before I ever subbed. I never connected the dots till now but it was that shooting scene that made me remember
Also admiring your old editing here. For a 10 yr old vid you did nice transitions and the feat of even including footage let alone not capturing the crtv scanlines
As a former smoker myself (around 15 cigarettes per day for 13 years since I was 13 years old), I can say I'm proud of you. I quit smoking 8 years ago and never looked back, but it hasn't been easy. So, very well done, Johnny!
Eight years ago I made a comment on your Phantasy Star for Master System video and you graciously replied with some good comments! Happy Anniversary to your channel, dude!!
You must be the most nostalgic man in the universe. For a first video way back then it was pretty good, pretty sure I subscribed way back then probably under an old name.
Johnny, I must say it is amazing how much has changed on your channel since the first video. Congrats on quitting smoking and staying off. You look so much younger now than back then. Watching this reminds me of my first video, and I will certainly keep mine up for memories and retrospect. Great video pal.
This is really interesting to see. We all change over time, but sometimes we don't realise it without seeing it put right in front of us like this. Congrats on the positive changes you've made in your life and the progress of your channel over the years!
This is pretty awesome. I have a lot of weird nostalgia for places I first played various arcade games. I tell you what though, my wife is not impressed by long list of locations and stories where I first played each game LOL. "Honey, that's the gas station where I first played Karnov and here's the laundry Mat where I played Willow".
I started watching your videos a month ago, went back to watch your first video, and am about halfway through your catalogue. Thank you for 10 years of making such heartfelt and genuine content. I turned 41 this year and though I don’t game anymore, I re-live a lot of old memories watching your videos. Thank you also Rob and Kim for all that you add to the videos; all the smiles and all the feels. I hope you keep sharing with the world your passion and your joy.
As an older guy myself, some folks don't know or don't remember - it was NOT cool to like video games, let alone displaying your passion on video for the world to see. Even James took a snarky POV and also he was playing a character. You put yourself out there and that took some guts. Credit to Johnny.
Johnny, been watching since the first episode and still love the show! 10 years, hard to believe. You look so different today, lol. Much younger and healthier. Cigarettes are so bad for you.
Congrats on the 10 year anniversary again. I am so thankful for your videos and your passion for games. I can’t wait to see what the next 10 years bring.
You do look so much better now man! Glad you quit smoking. I'm glad you keep these videos around and seeing your progress over the years helps us smaller youtubers out. It gives me hope that I can progress through this as well.
Want to say thank you for this video and the 10 year anniversary special stream. I struggled making videos but I learnt that if you just put the videos out there, enjoy what you're talking about then you'll keep developing. After many attempts, feel I am confident enough to make videos on a regular basis, and feel a lot of that is thanks to your words and advice.
So my story discovering the Happy Console gaming channel was when you and Rob used to do the show. I’ll be honest I thought you were the sidekick and this was rob’s show because he just hi jacked it with his passion for video games. I didn’t notice it was your channel until every video was pretty much Johnny in his BSAA jacket. I tried rewatching the early episodes but your right you don’t look or sound like past Johnny.
It is awesome to watch this because your first video actually got me into Sega rpgs in general and you defiantly look better over the years and thank you so much Johnny for being on UA-cam for ten amazing years
I started in 2011, only got to 10k but it was a mostly a great experience. Definitely not without the bs drama, but a lot of fun, and if you're passionate, it's worth it no matter what, to talk about your favorite games, and people actually care to listen! Still blows my mind. But my first video was horrible, a cellphone camera from 2009 pointed at a box set TV screen, of a PS2 game called EverQuest Online Adventures lol. Barely even spoke i was so timid.
Glad to have been with you over the 10 years (scary thought!) Keep up the awesome work Johnny you totally re-ignited my love for games of my youth! So grateful for that! Stay awesome!
HCG, I’ll admit your not my favorite UA-camr but the genuineness of yourself and who you are is why I subscribed. UA-cam needs more people like you on it. Keep up the good work sir!
Congrats on 10 years of uploading content and quitting smoking! I've lost track but I believe I've been watching for 9 to 10 years or so. I know it was shorty after the retro game review craze kind of started. Always appreciated all the original content. These days I don't have much time to watch any other of these type of video game channels really - this is the only one I still watch. :)
Dude, you're so humble and genuine. I've always been thin, even before I started smoking. I also struggle with other things unfortunately.. but seriously man, your first video wasn't even bad. The editing looked awesome I'm, especially for the equipment and knowledge you had at the time.
Congrats on 10 years on youtube. Only recently found your channel (end of 2017) but I really enjoy the content you've put out and your work with Victor Lucas.
This was the first episode I watched!! Totally got me into Phantasy Star, thanks John!!! Love looking back!! Channel has come so far since then. Look forward to another 10 years!!!
Johnny, I really enjoy your channel. These days I don’t have time to play video games because I have to focus on my music career. Watching your videos gives me my video game fix when I need it. Hopefully I’ll have time in the near future to get a console and play it. Your smoking video is helping me in the process of quitting. I still smoke and struggle, but it’s helping. Thanks Johnny!
That’s for all the videos Johnny you make me nostalgic when I watch cause I’m close to 40 and love the arcade days and all that stuff . Also you got me into Ys so thanks 🙏
Congrats on 10 years of your show and also 10 years smoking free! I am currently a smoker myself trying to quit, it's hard but I'm cutting down and hopefully will stop soon! Cheers!
For filming the screen, it's really clear. I like these specific game intros of a game review since it is like a demo reel of the game. I wish more people did this!! Thanks for uploading! What a difference 10 years makes, eh? Also, even back then, you seem very natural in front of the camera. You don't seem nervous in the least =)
This was great to see. Awesome man. I love your passion for games. To see the evolution of your channel and content is really cool. Keep up the good work
This was a great video. I'm at about 2 years and I look at my progression. I learned alot on the way. My first years worth of videos is well terrible to be honest. But I've made some great friends along the way.
Been watching your show for years. I was born in 81 and have the same same nostalgic view of gaming and movies as you. Watching your excitement and enthusiasm for this stuff makes me wish I had a friend or brother like you growing up. Your review of street fighter 2 was the first I saw and I was hooked. Never thought I would be nostalgic for the dimly lit arcades with cigarette smoke smell and the danger of getting mugged at any moment. Hope you have many more happy years of reviewing 😀
Always loved your passion for gaming. I've always wanted to make similar videos and just talk about my favorite games and whatnot. Never got the courage to put myself out there though. Happy 10 Years HCG!
Something about your old videos that has a bit of charm. Not to say that I don't like your new ones. But it was a different time and you where one of the few people that I watched back in the early days of UA-cam. Even though we have different interest, I liked the passion you had back then it really showed. Keep up the great work John. Here's to many more years. Cheers!
I remember watching this back in 2008. Been a fan since then. Your first video still holds up today because it really shows through just how important gaming is to your identity. The way you feel about Phantasy Star is the same way I feel about Dragon Warrior / Quest.
John, you were a pioneer in this style. James may have been an inspiration for you, but you made a style all your own and it's amazing! Happy 10th Year here on UA-cam, I hope I'm still watching your videos in 10 years to come!
seeing our younger self is an odd experience on itself since we usually like to ask, "Was that really me back then?" and yea, it is very jarring but it is also important so we can either learn or improve our futures. sorry for that cheesy mini speech, felt like it was appropriate. Love your videos. My first video I saw from your channel was the Megaman and Megaman X series reviews starring the Rob Man since I wanted to see some Megaman content at the time.
It's also a great way to gauge how much you've improved over the years and can be a reminder of things we've lost or forgotten but can still apply today. But man is it usually jarring.
I have quite a few videos I privatized on the basis of their old and really not up to standards I have now. But you're totally right, yes they're bad, but they're me. That's who I was back then. It's fun to see the transformation through the years despite how cringy the old videos are. Thank you Johnny! It's been a blast watching you over these last 10 years, here's to 10 more!
Wow phantasy star was the first video I watched. I didn't realize it was your first one! I had just played psu and wanted to know more and found your channel. Not only were you the first youtuber I knew by name, you also put me onto so much cool shit over the years. Hell I've been rewatching captain tylor now all week. Thanks for a decade of quality content. Cheers from the maritimes man!
A lot of respect and admiration for all of your work here on UA-cam. I started my channel last year, and I already feel weird about my first video :D Just want to say thank you Johnny for the Happy console gamer Show. A big inspiração for me. Take care my friend a big hug from Portugal. Game a lot ,) \../
Man I remember watching these. You look so much younger these days Johnny! Good work on the not smoking for so long. I am working on half a decade over here myself on that end.
I know this is 2 year late, but you mention Avgn being your inspiration & while I've also enjoyed his stuff over the years, you & your channel were the inspiration for me to finally do my own thing on here. Thanks so much & keep doing what you do.
Johnny, I'm so glad I came upon your channel years ago. This was the video that got me hooked on you. Phantasy Star drew me in to video games. Searching UA-cam years ago for any video I could find on the game led me to you. Keep on, keeping on brother! I'm totally psyched to see your updated PS video this summer! The best I could give you in return was a pic of the cake shop in Naula cave years ago on facebook for your birthday. ha!
What was the first episode you guys watched?
D&D stories episode 1. Swagger’s legend pulled me in and I subscribed immediately!
Think it was the FFXI addiction, very sad.
I found your channel looking for videos about YS games.
Sega 3D glasses review
cant remember which video, i still clearly remember your intro back then but i must have started following you around 2009.
But you bucked that trend, thank god.
Hey! for that fighting game we can bring in Fat Joe and Skinny Joe! and we can do clone fights!
Gamesack you the best
Game Sack cancer johnny has a badass fatality move
Not funny. First indicator should have been length.
You look so much healthier Johnny =D It's good looking back like this, makes you realise what a great decision you made, both quiting smoking and doing UA-cam =D
Thank you for offering informative commentary that is actually interesting to listen to instead of being like every UA-camr "CRINGING" at every first video.
So much this
Matthew Dadoun for real! I agree
Ha! You beaded me go back and watch my first video
Johnny has the skill of looking better as he ages, I came expecting the goofs but instead got the nostalgic feels - here's to the next 10 years!
When you were 20 you looked 40 and when you're 40 you look 20. I think most people would be OK with that
“Can you believe I’m the same person?” I remember you made a video about smoking and rpgs before showing your old self but I didn’t see your old opening until this video, but it’s super familiar. I think I used to watch a few of your old vids back in the day way before I ever subbed. I never connected the dots till now but it was that shooting scene that made me remember

BobSamurai I'd never knew you watch him! Nice 👌

this was an emotional/nostalgia trip for me too Johnny. Hats off and ten+ more years to the best gaming channel on UA-cam!
the people who bought that house probably dont even know the hallowed ground they tread every day.
Eight years ago I made a comment on your Phantasy Star for Master System video and you graciously replied with some good comments! Happy Anniversary to your channel, dude!!
Ya looking healthy and better man! Thanks for the memories, you are the memory gamer for me! So passionate when sharing you experiences! Thanks
Ha! Johnny even gets nostalgic for himself!
You're an awesome guy. Been watching the show since 2011. Keep it up!
Such a relatable dude. Hopefully our paths shall cross someday. You rock Johnny , and thank you from all of us seriously.
You handled what would have been a very embarrassing moment for most with nothing but good humor and grace. Great video.
Here's to another 10 years!
I feel like I missed something; what was embarrassing ?
Happy anniversary to the channel. Ive been watching for a little over 9 years. Its hard to believe its even been that long.

You must be the most nostalgic man in the universe. For a first video way back then it was pretty good, pretty sure I subscribed way back then probably under an old name.
I've been here since day 1. I can't believe it's been 10 years dude. Congrats.
Damn you are a natural from day one you weren't cameras shy at all.

I just love your passion. It's infectious.
I watched your first video! I can't believe it's been 10 years! You're now a legend John!
Johnny, been watching since the first episode and still love the show! 10 years, hard to believe. You look so different today, lol. Much younger and healthier. Cigarettes are so bad for you.
You looked 10 years older and sick with cancer, you look much healthier now. keep up the good work.
I remember that era of Happy Console Gamer 😊 I always used to wonder how old you were, you looked so young for someone who had so many 80's memories.

Ah yes, the days when Johnny used to look like he was apart of a biker gang. lol
Still does lol it's badass
That is so weird. You legit look older 10 years ago.
Smoking 🚬
It is awesome to watch this because your first video actually got me into Sega rpgs in general and you defiantly look better over the years and thank you so much Johnny for being on UA-cam for ten amazing years
been a sub for at least 9 of them 10 years. so thanks for all the entertainment my dude!
I started in 2011, only got to 10k but it was a mostly a great experience. Definitely not without the bs drama, but a lot of fun, and if you're passionate, it's worth it no matter what, to talk about your favorite games, and people actually care to listen!

You should use the bandana again in a new video, Johnny, for commemorative purposes :D
Glad to have been with you over the 10 years (scary thought!) Keep up the awesome work Johnny you totally re-ignited my love for games of my youth! So grateful for that! Stay awesome!
Your channel rules!! Deserves more subs!!
HCG, I’ll admit your not my favorite UA-camr but the genuineness of yourself and who you are is why I subscribed. UA-cam needs more people like you on it. Keep up the good work sir!
Damn man this is insane! You look so much healthier now dude. Congrats on 10yrs btw :-0

Is it weird to have a sense of nostalgia for old UA-cam videos?
This was really cool! Thanks for sharing!
I’m glad you made a good change. Some people can’t stop smoking. You did. You leveled up and defeated the enemy of addiction. Good job HCG.
Dude, you're so humble and genuine. I've always been thin, even before I started smoking. I also struggle with other things unfortunately.. but seriously man, your first video wasn't even bad. The editing looked awesome I'm, especially for the equipment and knowledge you had at the time.
Congrats on all your success!!
Congrats on 10 years on youtube. Only recently found your channel (end of 2017) but I really enjoy the content you've put out and your work with Victor Lucas.

Love seeing all the progress on your channel.
I still love how you and Victor Lucas are such good friends, you're friends are all cool.
This is inspirational. I think you did well at the start, you seem like a natural. But of course you’ve evolved and got better. Cheers.
That’s for all the videos Johnny you make me nostalgic when I watch cause I’m close to 40 and love the arcade days and all that stuff . Also you got me into Ys so thanks 🙏
It's freaky how deep your voice was
Congrats on 10 years of your show and also 10 years smoking free! I am currently a smoker myself trying to quit, it's hard but I'm cutting down and hopefully will stop soon! Cheers!

Great look back/reflection!
Here's to another 10 years and more!
Dude, you are awesome, thanks for the memories and the videos, the hard work and everything, you rock!
I started watching when your DQ videos started showing up! Glad that I did! And then I went back and saw this one which still hold up!
Love it!. Do more episode like these. Been with you since the beginning and I appreciate all the content
This was a great video. I'm at about 2 years and I look at my progression. I learned alot on the way. My first years worth of videos is well terrible to be honest. But I've made some great friends along the way.
Back in 2008, I did a search for "sickliest man on UA-cam" and the first result was your channel! J/k! I always look forward to your videos, Johnny.
Been watching your show for years. I was born in 81 and have the same same nostalgic view of gaming and movies as you. Watching your excitement and enthusiasm for this stuff makes me wish I had a friend or brother like you growing up. Your review of street fighter 2 was the first I saw and I was hooked. this was really a amazing video, you looka like gansgster back then, now yo looka like mob boss, you own the cartel.
Something about your old videos that has a bit of charm. Not to say that I don't like your new ones. Hahaha :D, everybody started somewhere. So glad you are still here.
Man You Have Come So Far. Awesome 4 U. Keep Going.

I`d say you look both younger and a lot healthier now compared to 10 years ago. Great video as always :D
This coming April will be my 4th yr smoke free.

A lot of respect and admiration for all of your work here on UA-cam.
I started my channel last year, and I already feel weird about my first video :D
Just want to say thank you Johnny for the Happy console gamer Show.
A big inspiração for me.
Take care my friend a big hug from Portugal.
Game a lot ,) \../
you should bring the bandana back for one episode.
I remember I started watching in 2014 and holy shit this channel was my summer, and it was a damn good summer.
"Warning Fanboy Rant Incoming" pretty much summed up this entire channel in its first video.

Watched so many of your vids that this made me kind of nostalgic too. Great shit brother
