I was having an issue with going into limp mode everytime I did a hard pull. Turn the car off and back on and it was fine. Turned out to be my Vanos solenoid (manifold side). Took both out and cleaned them real good with brake cleaner. Made sure they were dry and put them back in. Haven't gone into limp mode since. Very easy job to do.
Mine ended up being an HPFP failure. Those symptoms consisted of everything feeling normal at idle and start up but when accelerating it and getting into high revs would trigger limp mode.
Every since I got my 5 stepped intercooler, sport oil cooler valve and diverter I have had no Limp Mode issues at all and my chargepipe has held up brilliantly.
I watched this again I guess because I watched your previous vid where you changed your CPS and I have been having limp mode issues due to my MAF continuing to go out on me for some reason but as I was listening I noticed you were speaking about the N55's propensity to blow at a much higher rate. You said it may be due to the fact that we do not have a blow off system, that is incorrect because we do have Diverter Valve but they're plastic cheapies (as you well know most BMW stock parts are). My remedy for the blown plastic CP was to get an aftermarket one (ER) but I also ordered some GoFastBits Diverter Valve to replace the cheapie plastic one. Keep up the good work on the vids and enjoy your vacation.
Quick fix to limp mode is to shut off the car for about 1-2 minutes and it should drive normal unless it's a real serious problem the computer wont even start the car especially if something electrical is the problem
It sometimes helps, true, but whatever the reason is it’s a good idea to visit repair shop ASAP. The ECU has detected that something is not working as intended, and even if your engine runs normally the malfunction may cause accelerated wear, or even damage the other parts. Also driving in limp mode too much is not a good idea - ECU has cut off the turbine, retarded ignition and injection (to mitigate possible knocking) turned off variable valve timing and lift - which means worse efficiency. Worse efficiency means that less heat goes into generating torque and more into engine - so the engine runs hotter than it should, even if waterpump is boosted.
Hey listen I have watched so many videos on this but I decided to comment on this one I have a bmw 330i I went threw everything long story short short a old man told me to disconnect both battery terminals get a booster cable connect one end to the hot and the other end to the negative I swear it fixed my limp mode leave connected for about 1 min connect the battery back and I swear it worked for me the thought is it will drain all the power out the car and reset everything it working

Don't put your foot down hard till over 4000-4500 revs. Mine never does it above that but it does below all the time (or used to). It is saving me having to spend £1500 on getting the turbo charger re-cored for now
My x5 went to trans safe mode aka limp mode after I ran out of gas on the freeway ,put 1galon in reset the ecu by holding the gas pedal for 30 sec..while key on position 2, and good as new ...no limp mode no codes, fuel pump not damaged 😊

Does BMW provide on-dash notification of 'limp mode'? If not, what are the symptoms? Just significant loss of power? I have a period loss of power (I'd estimate somewhere between 40-60%), and in the past this has been a brief experience - like maybe a mile or less. Only occurred once in a while - every other month perhaps. Last night, I had the same - but for 40+ miles. After turning off the engine and ignition for an hour, then back on ... symptoms were gone, power back to normal. No engine lights or any other warnings. No change in sound ... just loss of power. Btw ... this is a diesel motor. Thoughts?
@@cesarmurillo7267 Hi ... this was a long time back, and it turned out to be the DPF. This was cleaned, and everything returned to normal. I had 2 shops look into it ... the 1st didn't do a good job. They put it one the diags computer, and started messing about with MAF and temp sensors. I paid $400 for them to not fix the issue. I then took it somewhere else and they said it was DPF - fortunately that was correct. Cost another $300-400 for cleaning and labour.

Half engine light comes, if I switch off again and restart it is normal, no problem while driving.it happens only in signal or roundabout when giving acceleration, is it like that you experienced
@vinumathew8610 Hi, it turned out mine was DPF getting blocked up from city (slow) driving. I had it cleaned out, and all was fine again. But, 16k miles later, it is starting to happen again. So will have to have it cleaned again. Or, replace with new but new is 5 times the price. Over £1200!

Hi guy, I bought and e93 n54 3 mouths ago and went to silverstone for a track day. After 8-9 laps it came with the same error and I just want to let you know that I damaged badly my crankshaft . It cost me more the 3000£ to fix the car. Found that 2 injectors didn’t work properly and probably the maintenance for the last year wasn’t done on time ...... so check it properly before you will drive it again.
I dont think what i am experiencing is limp mode, but I've been experiencing my speed decreasing on the highway if im going 80+ mph and then shutting off. I took it to bmw they miraculously have never heard of this issue 🙄 and said it could be because my battery voltage is low but my heart feels like it isnt a battery issue. Have you experienced this? Today i was only going 35 mph not on the highway, and the car shut off on me.
@@FrostyH2O it was a recall on the year make and model of my BMW they had to fix it. But the first place I took it treated me like I was crazy then I got the recall in the mail
hi I have a 2005 e90 diesel ..starts nicely rev count stays on one position no jerking. its an auto but it does not have that much power like the other bmw auto does more especially on first and second gear and it blows a black smoke but when you clock 100k/h the smoke's gone and the power is back it sharks like a rocket and it worries me more especially on robots , stop signs its embarrassing ...thanks in advance boss.
Black smoke is usually oil burning. Grey smoke is excessive fuel. Could be a number of things. Could just be time to change your air filter, could just be that your engine isnt warmed up fully yet. Could be your pcv is sucking too much oil into the intake. Could be oil leaking past the turbo seals. Try doing an oil and filter service and run some injector cleaner in it and install a catch can and see if it goes away. If it doesnt then get a mech to check the condition of the turbo

Got O2 fault bank 2 and misfire cyl. 6, 5, 4. Changed coils, injectors, and plugs maybe 20k or less miles ago. My boy runs like crap. Not even driving, cleaned vanos selinoids. Still I'm lost.

I wanna know why I've spent like $6000+ trying 2 figure out why my 2008 535i goes in2 limp mode so often. I've gotten new fuel injectors, new hoses, got the carbon cleaned out & all sorts of stuff but it's just a bad as b4. 4 as much as I've spent I probably could've gotten all new turbos. I'm about ready 2 trade my car 4 a horse 2 ride 2 work 🙄

cayce davis I have the same problem I just put in new crankshaft and the canister purge valve. And the shit cleared the abs light but no power did you fix yours ?
Quick question. You mentioned limp mode ccan cause a lot of things. I was driving fine on morninng. Park the car, 8 hrs later started the car traction control light was on and the gear with ! Inside. And stuck in 4th gear right now.. still starts and runs just rinning on 4gear. Do you have any idea why both lights are on e46.
This doesn’t really help me with my S65 4.0. It keeps coming up with throttle actuator codes but the actuators are perfectly fine. I’ve noticed running fuel injection cleaner helps but it’s getting annoying.
WyoHornetUSMC usually ive heard throttle actuators go bad because of an internal issue where the plastic gears break and don’t operate properly. are you sure you know they’re fine?
Simply Car Things considering it doesn’t do it often and, after using fuel cleaner, quits popping entirely, I’m pretty confident the computer is just wrong.

My 320d e90 won’t rev over 3000 rpm, whichever gear. turbo was repaired before 50 000 km, should run 100k km more easily. My tops is 155-160 kmh in 6th gear (2900-3000) and thats it. Pulls good until those rpms. Haven’t checked anything yet. Any thoughts on what the problem could be?

Could be Vacuum Leak, O2 Sensor before the Catalytic Converter, or some Oil Leak (Turbo leak, Cracked Cam Cover). Is their any noticeable changes in the N54s performance?

Hi Gents I'm having major issues on my 335 I e90 upgraded to 3 stage twin turbos. My low pressure fuel pump jammed up and burnt itself out, I replaced the pump and now I'm having major fueling issues. The car starts just fine no misfires or any issues and when I check my fuel pump pressure it's at 5020 MPA. Then as soon as I put the car into gear and drive 30 metres the fuel pressure drops rapidly down to 890MPA and the car stalls. I've fitted a new low pressure sensor and still I have the same problem. It runs fine when starting then as soon pull off and accelerate bam limp mode and then stalls my launch diagnosis keeps saying low pressure fuel pump and fuel pump plausibility but it's a new pump. Please any help would be appreciated thanks in advance.
Im not sure if its my injector that's failing or my hpfp, Im getting codes 29CD - Combustion misfires, cylinder 1, 2AAF Fuel pump, plausibility and 2E18 - Firing Cylinder 1. its on limp mode now. Can i switch the injector 1 and 2 to see if im getting cylinder 2 misfire to determine if in fact it is the injector thats the issue? and can i do that without replacing the rings and decompressor rings simply to diagnose? or can i casue damage this way? My original issue was after hard acceleration especially on the highway the car was choking / shaking. I have replaced the coils and spark plugs , which seemed to fix the issue for a month. few days ago i accelerated hard again and it went into limp mode and i am getting the codes above. Beforfe the limp mode I also got a code 29D9 Misfire at low tank fill level. prior and in addition the the codes above. Any suggestions? if it was the HPFP failing wouldnt I have issues with more than 1 cylinder?

wow ok yeah I haven't had that happen, I get weird boost fluctuations but only when the car has been driving off and on all day. Im not sure what the problem is yet.

Help! One of those grey plastic clips that connects the diverter valve hose to the charge pipe cracked and a piece of plastic got into the charge pipe. I thought i got it out with a vacuum but I guess I didn't, drove down my street and as the turbos spooled the engine began to knock like crazy! Any ideas what's going on? Thanks in advance!
damn, i'm not entirely sure what to do in that situation. For now try to drive the car as little as possible so you don't risk damaging your car until you get it sorted out

Defo not a misfire what happens is when driving it feels as if something is holding it back then lets go so shoots off. Even the revs go up but car just feels as if something is pulling it back

Doesn't do it everytime but I notice the humming sound in the engine bay as if the fan was going and once it stops the car goes. Also happens when I'm taking off from a stop. Barely any response from the pedal then after about 5 seconds the car is back to normal
My 2006 335i TT goes into limp mode but if I plant my foot the Turbos come on and it takes off still in limp mode. I have replaced both Turbos as they required overhaul to replace the clatter of the worn waste gates. I removed the Cats and dropped in 2 x 3" Stainless steel drop pipes into the exhaust, checked the Charge Pipe no cracks. I can turn key off and restart no Limp, drive normally but soon as I accelerate hard bingo Limp Mode comes on. The Techs have checked everything and I am over replacing parts as I am now up to $6000++ trying to eliminate Limp Mode by replacing parts, any ideas or thoughts would be great , JC - Perth Australia

@@austinmerrival927 I was told starting from £2k for repair mate and potentially more if they find anything else as it’s full rebuild ..🤬 so I came to an agreement of trading in - 1.5K less than value at the time with the car dealer. Not sure if they actually repaired or just auction it off. Got a c class MB instead, no complaints so far 🤞🏼

I have a 2009 e90, my car can be driving smoothly along then go into limp mode on the dash it's says "engine fault" then maybe 10 miles down the road it goes off, if I was to use this car 7 days a week it might happen 1 or 2 times a week, it dosent constantly stay in limp mode and if I turn the engine off and on it usually goes. I had the half check engine light and it was in limp mode I had a quarter of the gas tank, I filled the gas tank and the error was gone and it is going strong again although I feel like my ecu tune went back to stock
Could it b cuz u turned the car off & back on rather than the amount of fuel in the tank? I do love the new term u coined "1/2 check engine light"! That's funny 🤣

At what point did you wonder why you had oil on the garage door, tip change your rocker gasket along with mod PVC and get an oil catch-can.

You get a half check engin lights When driving If it’s a boost leak you might only get it while pulling

i have an e91 2l estate, it goes into limp mode but by the next morning you can drive it and it wont be in limp bit the engine light will be on

I dont think what i am experiencing is limp mode, but I've been experiencing my speed decreasing on the highway if im going 80+ mph and then shutting off. I took it to bmw they miraculously have never heard of this issue 🙄 and said it could be because my battery voltage is low but my heart feels like it isnt a battery issue. Have you experienced this? Today i was only going 35 mph not on the highway, and the car shut off on me.

@@FrostyH2O it was a recall on the year make and model of my BMW they had to fix it. But the first place I took it treated me like I was crazy then I got the recall in the mail

hi I have a 2005 e90 diesel ..starts nicely rev count stays on one position no jerking. its an auto but it does not have that much power like the other bmw auto does more especially on first and second gear and it blows a black smoke but when you clock 100k/h the smoke's gone and the power is back it sharks like a rocket and it worries me more especially on robots , stop signs its embarrassing ...thanks in advance boss.
Black smoke is usually oil burning. Grey smoke is excessive fuel. Could be a number of things. Could just be time to change your air filter, could just be that your engine isnt warmed up fully yet. Could be your pcv is sucking too much oil into the intake. Could be oil leaking past the turbo seals. Try doing an oil and filter service and run some injector cleaner in it and install a catch can and see if it goes away. If it doesnt then get a mech to check the condition of the turbo

Hey man love your videos, straight to the point. I need help, what's your opinion... 08 335i was diving great, all the sudden small pull and it went limp. Got home, ran codes. Got O2 fault bank 2 and misfire cyl. 6, 5, 4. Changed coils, injectors, and plugs maybe 20k or less miles ago. My boy runs like crap. Not even driving, cleaned vanos selinoids. Still I'm lost.

I wanna know why I've spent like $6000+ trying 2 figure out why my 2008 535i goes in2 limp mode so often. I've gotten new fuel injectors, new hoses, got the carbon cleaned out & all sorts of stuff but it's just a bad as b4. 4 as much as I've spent I probably could've gotten all new turbos. I'm about ready 2 trade my car 4 a horse 2 ride 2 work 🙄

So I have a 2007 335i sedan. Right now its in limp mode(engine power reduced), the car coughs if I go near the throttle and a p0172 code to boot. Any ideas?

I replaced knock and cam sensors and vanos solenoid and still got limp mode then walnut blasted intake manifold and no more limp mode faults. 2008 335i convertible
My seat was stuck so I had the seat jumped off to see if I was getting power to the motor of the seat and it went into limp mode. Do you think that would work

I’ve got a BMW 325i. It’s my first car and it came with a blown engine. I’ve bought another N52 for my car and I’ve put it in, it drove for a week then this error keeps coming on. It’s a red gear symbol which I think is limp mode, when I put it in gear it just revs there and does nothing, car dosent push like it’s locked. I’m not sure what’s wrong.

I have a issue. So my mechanic replaced my injector fuel on one of the cylinder. Its the cykinder 3. Things were fine but once i turned off my car and turned it back on 6 hrs later. It went to engine malfunction reduced power. What do u think its the cause
I HAVE A 2006 330i that loose power, sputtering after accelerating enough to just get on the freeway or pass another vehicle. I almost loose all power it feels like. Check engine light comes on for the moment

Quick question. You mentioned limp mode ccan cause a lot of things. I was driving fine on morninng. Park the car, 8 hrs later started the car traction control light was on and the gear with ! Inside. And stuck in 4th gear right now.. still starts and runs just rinning on 4gear. Do you have any idea why both lights are on e46.

This doesn’t really help me with my S65 4.0. It keeps coming up with throttle actuator codes but the actuators are perfectly fine. I’ve noticed running fuel injection cleaner helps but it’s getting annoying.
WyoHornetUSMC usually ive heard throttle actuators go bad because of an internal issue where the plastic gears break and don’t operate properly. are you sure you know they’re fine?

My 320d e90 won’t rev over 3000 rpm, whichever gear. turbo was repaired before 50 000 km, should run 100k km more easily. My tops is 155-160 kmh in 6th gear (2900-3000) and thats it. Pulls good until those rpms. Haven’t checked anything yet. Any thoughts on what the problem could be?

You need coolant go to your auto zone ask for some anti freeze an fill it up to the max line mark

Could be Vacuum Leak, O2 Sensor before the Catalytic Converter, or some Oil Leak (Turbo leak, Cracked Cam Cover). Is their any noticeable changes in the N54s performance?

Hi Gents I'm having major issues on my 335 I e90 upgraded to 3 stage twin turbos. My low pressure fuel pump jammed up and burnt itself out, I replaced the pump and now I'm having major fueling issues. The car starts just fine no misfires or any issues and when I check my fuel pump pressure it's at 5020 MPA. Then as soon as I put the car into gear and drive 30 metres the fuel pressure drops rapidly down to 890MPA and the car stalls. I've fitted a new low pressure sensor and still I have the same problem. It runs fine when starting then as soon pull off and accelerate bam limp mode and then stalls my launch diagnosis keeps saying low pressure fuel pump and fuel pump plausibility but it's a new pump. Please any help would be appreciated thanks in advance.

Im not sure if its my injector that's failing or my hpfp, Im getting codes 29CD - Combustion misfires, cylinder 1, 2AAF Fuel pump, plausibility and 2E18 - Firing Cylinder 1. its on limp mode now. Can i switch the injector 1 and 2 to see if im getting cylinder 2 misfire to determine if in fact it is the injector thats the issue? and can i do that without replacing the rings and decompressor rings simply to diagnose? or can i casue damage this way?
My original issue was after hard acceleration especially on the highway the car was choking / shaking. I have replaced the coils and spark plugs , which seemed to fix the issue for a month. few days ago i accelerated hard again and it went into limp mode and i am getting the codes above.
Beforfe the limp mode I also got a code 29D9 Misfire at low tank fill level. prior and in addition the the codes above.
Any suggestions? if it was the HPFP failing wouldnt I have issues with more than 1 cylinder?

If you're running any e85 run it all out of the car or use a fuel additive. Disconnect the battery and you should be all good!

@simplycarthing,I went in limp mode twice transmission fault reason,I own a 328i 2008 and I spent so many$ in less then 6 months...looks like the car falling apart lol for only 130k miles...if you can talking about mostly DIY transmission fault limpmode or DIY most commons issues with the car past 130k miles,thanks

Had my first engine malfunction message with my n55’s stock charge pipe failing on me at 4-5k rpm at the throttle body. It has 116k miles on stock boost
What exactly was wrong with the charge pipe? Also I am noticing that after warm starts after I was driving for awhile the car feels really sluggish and has boost surges.
@@beckmarchiniak716 it just sheered off at the throttle body and wouldn’t go back on. It failed while doing a pretty good pull
wow ok yeah I haven't had that happen, I get weird boost fluctuations but only when the car has been driving off and on all day. Im not sure what the problem is yet.

My car went into limp mode and I notice my car was low on oil so I filled it with the oil I had in my trunk and limp mode didn’t go back on for the rest of the day. I’d want to make sure if that’s one cause so I know if it was the problem or not

My 335(n54) keeps going into limp mode around the 2000-3000rpm on the highway, the code that comes up is 3100 with no other fault code. Any ideas as to what it could be?

Help! One of those grey plastic clips that connects the diverter valve hose to the charge pipe cracked and a piece of plastic got into the charge pipe. I thought i got it out with a vacuum but I guess I didn't, drove down my street and as the turbos spooled the engine began to knock like crazy! Any ideas what's going on? Thanks in advance!

damn, i'm not entirely sure what to do in that situation. For now try to drive the car as little as possible so you don't risk damaging your car until you get it sorted out

Hi this completely off topic I have a 2007 335i auto when driving putting foot on accelerator when gear change from about 3 to 4 I get a humming noise and it's as if car holds back then leaps forward something to do with gearbox I think do u have any ideas tried reading codes but nothing show

Defo not a misfire what happens is when driving it feels as if something is holding it back then lets go so shoots off. Even the revs go up but car just feels as if something is pulling it back

Doesn't do it everytime but I notice the humming sound in the engine bay as if the fan was going and once it stops the car goes. Also happens when I'm taking off from a stop. Barely any response from the pedal then after about 5 seconds the car is back to normal

My 2006 335i TT goes into limp mode but if I plant my foot the Turbos come on and it takes off still in limp mode. I have replaced both Turbos as they required overhaul to replace the clatter of the worn waste gates. I removed the Cats and dropped in 2 x 3" Stainless steel drop pipes into the exhaust, checked the Charge Pipe no cracks. I can turn key off and restart no Limp, drive normally but soon as I accelerate hard bingo Limp Mode comes on. The Techs have checked everything and I am over replacing parts as I am now up to $6000++ trying to eliminate Limp Mode by replacing parts, any ideas or thoughts would be great , JC - Perth Australia

Paul Morris no it isn’t, there are other reasons why your car could go into limp. But limp mode can be caused by a boost leak.
Mine went into limp mode few days ago took it to the mechanic and currently sh1tting myself as to how much it will cost. Something to do with cam shaft 😳

Not sure if they actually repaired or just auction it off. Got a c class MB instead, no complaints so far 🤞🏼

I have a 2009 e90, my car can be driving smoothly along then go into limp mode on the dash it's says "engine fault" then maybe 10 miles down the road it goes off, if I was to use this car 7 days a week it might happen 1 or 2 times a week, it dosent constantly stay in limp mode and if I turn the engine off and on it usually goes. So any ideas?? Is this video the one I'm looking for do you think??

I had the half check engine light and it was in limp mode I had a quarter of the gas tank, I filled the gas tank and the error was gone and it is going strong again although I feel like my ecu tune went back to stock
