I happened to be there at the same time as an instrument collector and he said that they were invented for the sake of early recording technology. I'm not sure if he was referencing the earliest electronic, or mechanical recordings but the idea was that the sound would be more directional so would provide a better signal. Possibly talking about blowing down the horn of a edison cylinder machine

It was a very low level conflict. 4000 murders over 30 years made it statistically much safer than the US during same period. Not to be flippant about each of those killed. Horrible loss each one of them
