Hi guys, I have a 48' commercial fishing boat here in Anegada in the British Virgin Islands and for years I used to paint my wheels with the same antifouling paint I put on the hull. Then a few years ago I started using a product I think by Interlux called propspeed a little spending down here but seems to work pretty well. I usually haul once a year and I don't have any barnacle problems at all.... Just thought I'd share with you what I use here in the Tropics. I really do enjoy watching all your videos. Wishing you guys great success and good luck fishing.
WOW..ya...nothing and nobody would wanna move very fast with a crusty behind like that!😂 ya gotta love before and after clean up videos....especially if your the one just watching. Lol Nice to see you T!! GREAT JOB GUYS❤
Thanks guys for taking the time to show us the cleaning of the prop and she's a beast out of the water she looks pretty big it's deceiving you don't realise how big it is once it's sitting half underwater
I'm glad you guys got her straightened out. I saw that happen to a boat that sat at the dock for awhile in Boston. She had an 8V71 and would not turn up past 1200 rpm's. Owner had new injectors done adjusted the rack. No change. The prop was fouled even worse than yours.Hard to believe how much power it robbed.
Hi Guys. I love the long videos you make, and especially the music you put over your recordings, I'm thinking of the South American song. Greetings from Misery Bay
Hey guys, Rev. Paul Eustis Florida. I grew up in Alaska, I learned a trick for barnacles by mixing Jalapeño oil with the paint it helps the keep barnacles from the hearing to the boat maybe give it a try if it works in Coldwater.
When I grid, I just put a fish tote against my rails on the piling side, and fill it until I get the right list before the keel hits bottom. Then when I am firmly on the beds, just pull the plug and let it drain. Super easy.
@@EISAlaska Ya Roger - I'm a steel troller, 47' x 15.2' beam, but not as deep as Emerald Isle. I can get a good heel going with a full tote, but always just fill it until I get a few degrees of lean. How did the prop clean up work?
In my 67 years I have never heard a ships prop or propeller be called a wheel, it took me a while to figure out what you were on about, not heard many park a boat either its always berth. Maybe its local dialogue. A nylon scotch bright wheel on a drill or disc cutter would polish that prop up nicely, there are some good ones that are hard but not abrasive enough to damage the bronze propeller.
I got a line hung up in my wheel recently 😫. My boats much smaller so it’s easy for me to go on the grid and in Yakutat it’s free…Thanks for the instructional halibut videos my first season went well
That’s awesome! Glad we could help a little. I wish we could have stopped in Yakutat on the way home from SE. We had planned to stop for the nite, but it was late when we got near so we just keep motoring by. Glad to hear you had a good season!
Could have been worse I guess? Still, what a hassle to deal with...You guys have put so much time, effort, and work into the Emerald Isle. She looks great though! New deck system is a beaut and everything, you've done an amazing job!
I really recommend Propspeed or one of the close copies, it really works for us here in the sub-tropical part of Australia where marine organisms seem to appear overnight. I guess that once you get working the problem will diminish to a large degree. If you want to improve the efficiency of the rudder put a plate on the top and the bottom, it stops the flow spilling off just like modern aircraft wing tips. Looking forward to seeing the new vessel fishing.
It is good to see you t it has been a minute.and for the mother also.ot is a great video when the whole family is there.i bet they all will be there the first time out with the new girl.and I bet they love it when mom is there with them because she cooks them better meals lol but hey never know pops may be a good cook also or matt
I was anchored up near an island for 2 months while i worked on my mates prawn Trawler then then i had to be towed across to a shallow bank wait for the tide to drop had almost a square prop scraped the bottom while i was at it they grow very fast here in the tropics if you are just sitting. Next time if you get a chance give the prop a polish it slips through the water better and is also harder for barnacles to attach.
Awesome job guys, cant believe just how quick those banacles grow.Prop and propeller look brand new. Will you paint the prop and propeller with anti fungal paint?
After you knock the big stuff off, a brush on coat of Muriatic Acid (be careful it is acid) will take the stain and bases off. Most hardware or box stores carry as it is commonly used in the masonary trade as well as to clean swimming pools. Give it an hour before the tide washes it off. Be careful not to get it on your skin especially your face. Wear protection and wash it off if you do get some on you. Wear eye protection for sure. A wire wheel on an angle grinder will also work albeit slower.
The zinc on the rudder needs replaced. That protects a bunch of expensive metal. Best to use a hard, Non ablative, paint for the prop and the rudder. Comes in a handy spray can.
Just goes to show you how aggressive the barnacle problem is with taking over the prop , even with a zinc anode on the rudder . maybe you need a couple of anodes to deter them . .
Anodes protect the prop, shaft and other metal underwater from galvanic corrosion. It has no effect on marine growth. Antifouling paint or coatings are to prevent or slow marine organisms. 😄
Hey guys wouldn't it be great if the Jules Verne sci-fi came real, and all you had to do was put three billion volts at one amp through the hull and every living thing dropped off! Save me some of Mom's sandwiches I'm starving as well.
Haha, that’s quite the concept! Not familiar with Jules Verne but sounds like it could be quite destructive to marine life. 😅 The Emerald Isle did come with a little electrical fish attractor that would put low voltage into the water to attract fish when trolling, that’s how I think it worked anyways. We took it off though, that’s about as close as it got to putting billions of volts in the water haha! Mom’s sandwiches were gone in a blink of an eye, they were scrumptious. So sorry! 😂
No. Electrolysis is the enemy of metal parts on vessels. We were layed up for along time. Regular use of the vessel will prevent them from accumulating.
If no one is scheduled you can hop right on. During big tides they can get filled up so best to schedule a week or two in advance. We got lucky and there was a spot day before a couple other deep draft vessel we scheduled to get on. Cost is $2/ foot per tide.
I saw that on EIS you have prepared for the halibut at the stern, differently from what was done recently on the Fish Tale to avoid contacts between the longline and the propeller and for a more comfortable maneuverability. Is this a permanent arrangement?
We’ll be hauling off the side on the Emerald using a pulley on the mast, similar to the Fish Tale. You’re seeing the setting gear (bazooka/launcher and table for holding the tub of hooks) which we set off the stern with, also similar to the FT.
If possible put a nice paint job on it, and have a ceramic coat. Put over it. I have a 2004 Dodge Dakota that I put a ceramic coat on every 6 months and I don't have one spot of rust on my truck I live in Tennessee where salt is on the roads, and we get snow, not 1 bit of rust on my truck because i keep it ceramic coated, nothing sticks to it. Wonderful product
I see the problem. You didn't cast your blades in a home-made forge, and then profile them with an angle grinder. Does your transfer case even have low range?

Do you guys know the weight change you have with the remodelling? Just thinking you might benefit from a reprop anyway might be beneficial to get the best speed and engine efficiency. Could make a big difference to your fuel bill for the year. I know those babies aren’t cheap but it might be real interesting to see the calculations. Boats looking great can’t wait to see it fishing.

Yes, she is! A lot below the water for sure.
Can’t believe I enjoyed watching a boat cleaning, but I did. Some of us old folks had our time, but you bring back memories thank you all.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks, Marilyn.
The hull sides came clean nice and easy. Running gear was a quick scrape for the younger part of the team. Good job!
It looks better every video i can't wait to see her in action 😊
Love you guys working together big Hurray !
Good days work and spending time with the family.
How could you leave us in suspense like that!
so bummed that I have to wait for the test drive!!!! But knowing you guys she should run perfect. Beautiful job cleaning her up!

Nice video. Things I've never seen before. And the barnacles! Wow! I never knew.thank you for the great video
Those deck lights are excellent. Great job
Hard to believe this much barnacle buildup since the paint job. Thanks! Really enjoyed this.
Great job guys
Well that just is a huge relief! Awesome you guys!
Thank you for including us on the grid
Hi Guys. I love the long videos you make, and especially the music you put over your recordings, I'm thinking of the South American song. Greetings from Misery Bay
Always satisfying a day on the grid, I loved the trip back to the mooring, boat feels light and responsive though also doesn't stop as well either.
🎉🎉 THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH,,, JUSY SO INTERESTING,,, GODS SPEED🎉
It looks very good with the lights!
Wow those buggers were really stuck on!!
Looking good!

A great job as always.
Thanks, we try haha!
Great work. I can tell you love hat you do. Can’t wait to see Emerald Isle out in the water.
I would so love to have been there helping.
Hard work-yes...
But the sea air and great company with you all would be wonderful.
Blessings to you all

Good idea. On the Fish Tale it was easy, but with the Emerald Isle it takes quite a bit more to list her over.

Marinas Might be a barnacle rich environment, Lots of barnacle seeds floating around or something. lol
Scraping barnacles, such satisfying work!
Yep, we had to evict them! 😅

Loved the "Amateur" comment. Fist bump!
Looks like you have a lot more deck then on the Fishtail
It feels like acres!
Awesome job guys, cant believe just how quick those banacles grow.Prop and propeller look brand new.
Will you paint the prop and propeller with anti fungal paint?
That will definitely slow you down with the prop that encrusted. If the hull looks the same that's a definite power robber.
After you knock the big stuff off, a brush on coat of Muriatic Acid (be careful it is acid) will take the stain and bases off. Most hardware or box stores carry as it is commonly used in the masonary trade as well as to clean swimming pools. Give it an hour before the tide washes it off. Yep same thing happened on my boat it's crazy how much it kills your power
Over here in Australia we use PropOne on our propellers and also on the rudder, some guy's use anti fowl on there rudder and PropOne on the propeller
The zinc on the rudder needs replaced. That protects a bunch of expensive metal. Best to use a hard, Non ablative, paint for the prop and the rudder. Comes in a handy spray can.
Great Job Guys
Can you refresh my memory, the grid is coordinated by the harbor master ?
And is there a cost ?
Thank you !
Dave Caissie
Yes. Part of our harbor facilities owned by the city. We just schedule tide we want to be on, cost is $2/ ft.
Glad I don't have to that anymore
Application of Propspeed on the propeller and rudder will stop the barnicals getting a grip and fall off when the vessel moves.
Boat is looking good yall did he'll of a job now go cacthum
Use it full strength to cut the lime. It won't hurt brass or most metals except aluminum (it will take the shine off).
Propspeed. Working on a 98 meter motor yacht.
Hello lol like you don't have enough work to do lol good luck
West good fren

you should try out a " turbo nozzle " for the pressure washer......it works much faster and more thorough in my opinion...

What an oddly shaped rudder.
Why not paint the prop and rudder with non fouling paint?

Is there a way to introduce electrolysis to the wheel and rudder to repel the barnacles?
No. Electrolysis is the enemy of metal parts on vessels. We were layed up for along time. Regular use of the vessel will prevent them from accumulating.
Prop shield.
Question? How much notice do you need to get on the grid? Who do you schedule it with? How much does it cost?

@@EISAlaska thank you EIS Crew
I'm looking forward to seeing how she will go after this great engineering work. Thank you for the education.
how long did it take for that much barnacle buildup on the prop?
We got splashed Jan of 23, so its been a minute. Not a lot of moving the boat either, that helps keeping barnacles off the blade.
I saw that on EIS you have prepared for the halibut at the stern, differently from what was done recently on the Fish Tale to avoid contacts between the longline and the propeller and for a more comfortable maneuverability. Is this a permanent arrangement?

Could you put bottom paint on the prop?
So Matt, was the thrust restored?
I am glad you guys figured it out. I was a little worried.
Same here! Had a feeling it was something simple since we hadn’t changed anything else that would’ve effected it. Thankfully that solved it!
I am glad the problem is fixed. That prop was hurting.
I kinda figured with Matts hints That it was growth on her bottom.
I see the problem. You didn't cast your blades in a home-made forge, and then profile them with an angle grinder. Does your transfer case even have low range?

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE BOAT MOVE , NOW THAT SHES ALL CLEAN
How often do you get the line in the prop?
How much does it cost to use the slip and the power washer for one low tide?
I went back to #72 to see if you left the nut off, or the propeller. was backwards
Haha. 🤣 That would be par for the course. Luckily the shaft is tapered so the prop can’t be put on backwards!
Do you guys know the weight change you have with the remodelling? Just thinking you might benefit from a reprop anyway might be beneficial to get the best speed and engine efficiency. @@derekwiffen1115 I believe their guesstimate was 4o ton for the boat and 20 ton of water in the hold. Or it was 40 ton total.
Good size wheel for a 671 is it 3:1.
Yes.Twin disk 509 3:1
Maybe you should think of stop fishing and go into barnacle farming😂
Haha!
Would barnacles burn off with a torch?
What was wrong with the other boat?
