I have always thought Stal- was just a prefix for skeletal enemies, -fos a suffix similar to folk. For example Stalfos are skeletonfolk, Lizalfos are lizardfolk, dinofos dinosaurfolk, Wolfos is wolffolk. As for Stalchild they are some kind of unnatural creature being the children of darkness or Ganondorf or something along those lines.
Yes stal means skeletal in the zelda world. I'm under the assumption fos is litteraly "foes" They can be children. They don't have any army gear... But people don't like to think of having to fight the kids killed in a war... Their brain just goes to the big one and says "ok good it's too big to be a child" n not asking... Why is it after so many there's a giant one... Is it programming, or folklore... That may be a mechanic of the game that's being seen as lore...
Yeah, them being the fallen soldiers of the civil war makes a lot of sense. I am not sure I would attribute their appearance to Ganondorf. I think more likely they are revived by some sort of curse that's unrelated to Ganondorf. I wouldn't put it past Ganondorf to seek and stop the source though. Stalchildren would make moving the kingdom and controlling it more difficult for Ganondorf's men so at this point it might have been favorable for him to end the curse. Plus, he would have something to show his "good will" to the peoples of Hyrule, maybe helping him in securing his power and gaining more followers.
@@ZelRando Well, Ganondorf wasn't responsible in Majora's mask either. I also don't think Ganondorf is responsible for the curse that causes Hylians travelling the lost woods turn into Stalfos. To me, it feels more likely something in the Civil War itself cursed the soldiers. There is a lot of evidence for war crimes, torture, etc in Bottom of the Well and Shadow Temple. Bongo Bongo can also be seen as a soul affected by some sort of curse, still hitting these marching drums.
If ganondorf swore fealty to the king at the end of the civil war, it means he and the gerudo were part of the opposing army during the war and lost. He may have planned far in advance to curse those who died in hyrule field during the actual war and not after
Probably the simplest answer is that they are molblin skeletons. They could alternatively be amalgamations of various bones and not necessarily from any specific race or individual.
I think the word child refers to something else. Much in the same way that bats are children of the night. These beings are a part of the stal, whatever that would entail, and thus are "children" to the greater whole (the stal) but who knows?
For a time, I thought it would’ve made more sense for the Stalchildren to appear only in the Adult side of OOT because Ganon had complete control over Hyrule. But using the cover of darkness to camouflage his movement by summoning skeletal beings (obviously from the Fierce War) to keep the Hyrulean population at bay. And it’s also worth noting that Ganondorf still doesn’t have the complete Triforce. He intentionally allowed Link to oppose him to lure out Princess Zelda so he can imprison her and in turn lure Link to the interior of his castle tower, thus leading to the moment the Triforce parts resonate for the first time in seven years.
@mad_quack certainly possible, but they are already dead, so the only way they could die would be by being killed by someone else. And no one ever enters the field at night :P
I've always thought they were there as a result of the civil war in Hyrule, but I've never connected how in Majora's Mask they were there because of a dark curse after a war, so in Ocarina of Time they also might be there because of a dark curse after a war. And Ganondorf doing it makes so much sense.
I appreciate the thought and research that went into this video, but I disagree with a lot of it. First, the name Stalchild really seems to imply that they are the child version of Stalfos -- maybe not literally; it could be that they're only called that because they are smaller than Stalfos. But the implication with Stalfos seems to be that they are undead people, rather than beasts or monsters that merely happen to resemble human skeletons (there's a Kokiri girl who literally says that people who get lost in the woods become Stalfos), so if the Stalchildren are undead people, they're either all very short adults, or they're undead children, and the name certainly implies the latter (after all, theyre not called "Staldwarfs"). I don't think the fact that a giant one can spawn is enough evidence to rule out the implication that they are children. The game mechanic where a defeating enough of a type of enemy leads to a giant version showing up is the same for the other indefinitely spawning enemies, namely Guays and Leevers. Also, one could just as easily argue that the giant one is giant by the same magic that makes them animated corpses to begin with. Regarding the Majora's Mask tie-in, I don't think the fact that the same character model was used for the soldiers of Ikana implies that the Stalchildren are adult soldiers any more than Romani and Cremia being two different people implies that child Malon and adult Malon are two different people, or Lulu secretly being Ruto (who time traveled or grew up way faster than Link then went to Termina), etc. With the way MM used a lot of the same character models as OoT, trying to connect their MM lore to their doppelgangers in OoT falls apart quickly (why characters do have doppelgangers between OoT and MM is a whole other mysterious topic). Lastly, the reason why they no longer appear in Hyrule Field when Link is an adult might be a little more nuanced and symbolic, but there is a somewhat implied explanation. They only come out when Link is a child, at night, when he strays from the path through the field, and they don't come out when he's wearing the Bunny Hood. This could mean they either are beings that prey on or only manifest in the presence of fear or they are born of Link's fearful imagination entirely. It's broad daylight? He's less afraid and they don't appear. He has the security of knowing he's on an established path through the field? He's less afraid and they don't appear. He has a fun bunny hood with cute, floppy ears that cheer him up and get his mind off the scary surroundings? He's less afraid and they don't appear. I'll also throw in how that last point ties in with a larger theme in OoT, which is that there is much subtext and implied emotional intensity in the telling of the story from Link's perspective. MM is a masterpiece in its own right, but a lot of its drama and emotional significance revolves around other characters and the very literal threat of destruction from the moon. There's something to be said for OoT's more subtle drama and tragedy that plays out very personally for Link himself. That's why I find it really hard to compare the two and say that one is a better game than the other. They're both so great in their own distinct ways.
I love comments like these. It gives a good insight into how others feel about theories and you actually make some good points! I like the part about the bunny hood boosting Links mood to make him less likely to be attacked. But i do still think that the fact Stalchildren, are called Stalchildren, in both MM and OOT, in terms of lore reasons, they are both relevant to each other. For theory reasons it's the only real source of information other than Twilight Princess but the Skeletal creatures in that game look a lot different. Plus MM and OOT are still the same timeline, and realistically MM could be happening inside Links head while he is asleep (dreaming) so it could be good information if we think outside the box, and assume Links experience and knowledge of Stalchildren in OOT and after, could be factual in MM. But realistically it's all just a load of theories and one day i hope Nintendo release a book of some kind explaining all the tiny details of the creatures in Zelda! Theorizing and exploring the lore is something I'm happy to see, so I definitely wouldn't want to come across as telling you you're wrong or shutting down conversation or anything like that.
