I think she was scared of being vulnerable at first. With an abused mother and being eventually victime of domestic abuse herself, she was fragile and damaged. With that type of baggage, while she was surviving on the run, she really couldn't afford to fall in love, but she fell in love anyway. Then, when she realized the depth of Jack's feelings, she was flabbergasted by that kind of love, free, selfless, pure, that she never experienced before and that she always felt unworthy of. In season 5 she was heartbroken as much as Jack. But you're right, he loved her so much.
Have you ever had low self-esteem or know someone who does and struggles accepting love of others? This is Kate post-crash. This is a lot of losties. Kate loved and appreciated him in canon. If you watched every episode, it's there. She was afraid to open up & trust, as Jack was. Damaged goods. Per the "Writers Guide 2004" pitch to ABC execs by Abrams & Lindelof: "...the island reveals the emotion Kate tries so hard to hide and forces her to drop the walls she has built around herself." It didn't happen overnight. Kate states in 2x9: "I'm sorry that I'm not as perfect as you! I'm sorry I'm not as good," in 2x9 to Jack before their kiss. And she reveals when talking "Wayne" through Sawyer that her "step-dad/biological father" drove away his father, beat her mother, plus the flash-backs from S1 of lewd behavior towards Kate, perhaps more, but she doesn't talk. Kate says to "Wayne"/Sawyer: "I hated that you are a part of me. That I would never be good. That I would never have anything good." Evangeline Lilly talked about 2x9 in a "Lost Magazine" interview and said when Kate petted the black horse "its what brings her back from the edge of instability" to her "feeling in some way, shape or form that she touched God...There is a grace that passed through the connection...It's like she's given the grace so she can believe in herself." She begins the process of healing, which carries over to the mainland. Raising Aaron, facing her legal issues head-on, her ability to share with her friend. Jack and Kate's relationship blossoms during those three years. If you read BTS materials, have seen the writers and show runners on panel discussions, on tv shows, in forums, i.e. Writer's Guild Foundation, etc. they repeatedly say the survivors are stuck on an island together, have big problems and don't want talk about them They all have trust issues and feel alone, "lost" figuratively and literally in the world. But "they find pieces of themselves on the island: (Lindelof). The same goes for Jack and Kate. The more whole she is, the more she can accept Jack's love. Kate always appreciates him in canon, whether they agree in the moment or not, mirroring real life. True love isn't always hearts and rainbows. They have a ride or die love.

I love your Jack and Kate Season Recaps. Thank you so much for doing them. It captures their relationship in vignettes. S5 was fraught with angst. They loved each other but there were other unresolved feelings and the island's interference. For anyone who understands true ride or die love, relationships are complicated. Not all fluff. So many feelings captured and artfully portrayed by Fox and Lilly. Much appreciation!
I love Kate and Jack. Selfless. Willing to help, protect, care for and lay down their lives for other survivors. Kate worked diligently picking fruit to feed other survivors with nobody mentioning it. Jack did rounds, checking on people, feeling responsible for each life. Kate had a beautiful character arc. She became grounded, stable. If Jack lived and went home with her, IMO they would have married, raised their baby and found life balance including Jack not being a work-a-holic. ❤️
DC AeternaGirl crazy how she pulls her friends from the sub to help her stop Jack from blowing up the bomb, and then changes her mind and gives in to it because she’s so madly in love with him. Very angsty season for jate, as you pointed out, but Kate’s ultimate love Jack is revealed all throughout the season

This is a misconception leaving out motivations and surrounding events. Yes! 😊 Kate was in love with Jack, no matter where they were in the push-pull of their relationship, often riddled with island distractions. First: Kate didn’t make anyone do anything. Juliet and Sawyer made their own decisions as individuals. Juliet was the one who decided to leave the sub and go back. She knocked out the Dharma sub crewman, unlocked Kate’s and her cuffs, and asked James if he was coming or going to sit there and whine about it. (Too bad - they could have made a fortune in stocks and bets on the mainland. 💴🤷🏻♀️) Second, most important, is the big picture: The island would NOT have let Juliet leave. What happened always happened. She was always the one who detonated the hydrogen bomb in the Swan site pit, dying shortly after in 1977. 23 years later, Juliet arrives on the island, recruited by Richard Alpert, to address the fertility issues she caused by detonating the bomb. Almost 4 years after this, Oceanic 815 crashes. It’s a loop. An ironic catch-22. This doesn’t reflect on Kate. Her character, as cited in “Lost: The Official Magazine,” was the most grounded and mature, having earned her redemption “after 3 years of self-sacrifice raising Aaron.” The point is she was focused on finding Claire, loving her and Aaron “as one.” Getting blown up would kill innocent people, friends, Jack and (obviously) hinder rescuing and restoring the mother-child relationship of her dear friend. 😳😊🌺

Writers are obligated to add challenges to stories or they would be boring. 😊🥰 Lost was intentionally modeled after the classic “Hero’s Journey” temple used for thousands of years. Damon Lindelof explains in a UA-cam video (search Lost Hero’s Journey.) Lost is chock full of challenges, setbacks, and ultimately the overcoming of it for individuals, but ultimately Jack. ❤️
Jate wasn't my favorite ship. Suliet was. But when I watch a video like this, it makes me appreciate how much Jack and Kate always belonged together. Seems like no matter what happens and how dysfunctional they have been at certain moments (but they were mostly a pretty good team), they will always be drawn to each other, just like bees are to honey.
This was such a frustrating season. Angst, misunderstanding, so much left unsaid. But their feelings were all there. They were breaking each other's heart. Kate was still so hurt and angry, she just couldn't understand him and even wanted to punish him for ruining their own happiness. Jack looked so defeated and resigned, he knew he was the cause of her hurt and believed he couldn't fix what he did to her. He even had to figure out what the Island wanted. If they only had talked to each other...
He did not do anything to her, she ruined it with the secret with Sawyer. I love Jate since the beginning of course, epic powerful couple. But he loves her so much, purely and deeply and she betrayes him all over with a secret for Sawyer. Jack is pure and he even lets her to live her so called affair or relationship or whatever she had with Sawyer. He is that selfless. She does not deserve him but he does because he loves her that much. At the end she is angry because she realized how much she loved him all this time and that she ruined it with the memory of Sawyer. Sawyer moved on with Juliet, and she had a life and lived her love with Jake...this was a writer fluke to bring back the triangle. It is not faire to all the couples. They are not teenagers. Why bring all this back after all they have and shared, they were engaged, does it count for nothing. You see how much she loves Jake and she had the chance to tell him and did not. They should have had more moments together, like the other couples.

Are you also that controlling in your relationship if you defend that? Also -'' he lets her live her affair with Sawyer'', what? They were not together at that time, she could sleep with whoever she wanted to do (same as him), so he had NOTHING to forgive her for! She was not his girlfriend at that point, and she didn't have to wait forever until he could make a move!

In the last episodes of the fifth season, Jack insisted on the word “destiny” and gave up and decided to leave Kate for Sawyer. Juliet decided to leave Sawyer for Kate, and she started saying “destiny” does not want us together, meaning the writer made it clear that he intentionally intended this, and Jack killed Juliet to end fate. With Kate and Sawyer leaving the island together, it is as if they were here, making it clear that they were at the end of their lives. For some, especially the writer's focus on Jack saying that Kate did not love him shows that by the end Kate only loved Sawyer. A hideous ending despite a legendary series. And if any of the followers say that Jack has evidence of another world together, this has nothing to do with it. In the reality of the series Jack is dying, he imagines that he has met With Kate and her remaining in another world, I saw what I dreamed of no more. Even though I am a fan of Jacket’s duet, this is the reality that my heart did not love. Death and Jack and the love of Kate Sawyer
Jack and Kate, and Sawyer and Juliet were the couples meant to be. The fact that they got to spend eternity together makes it pretty obvious, don't you think?
