There's a big difference between protesting against tourism and protesting against tourists. One is protesting government policy, the other is basically antagonising people and trying to make them feel bad just for trying to enjoy their short lives while they have the chance. I think these protests would be much more effective if they were more targeted at government policy. Airbnb should not be allowed to run rampant in every city, turning once culturally Spanish residential streets into holiday resorts. It's sad, and it's so easily avoidable. There was nothing wrong with hotels. Airbnb has made life better for a small number of people and much worse for so many others. If the government had simply limited it (for example one Airbnb property per building or something like that), we probably wouldn't be having this issue. But a lot of the protesting ends up being targeted at normal people and families who perhaps have difficult situations at home or who have saved up for months or years to come away on holiday, and get attacked for simply trying to enjoy themselves or spend some money in local bars and restaurants. Moreover, tourism is something like 14% of the economy here. It's a bit ridiculous to think it can just be done away with. If (hypothetically) the government banned tourism, without fixing the autonomo system or engaging in sensible fiscal policies to create more reasonable work opportunities, youth unemployment would absolutely plummet, far below what it's at now. But, tourism can be localised to specific locations (as in hotel resorts etc), it does not have to fill up every single square inch of a city until there's no one local left. That's an absolutely tragic thing to happen to a place, and it shouldn't be allowed. Protecting the sovereignty, culture and existence of the native population is the most basic and fundamental responsibility of the government, but most governments seem to think their job is just to grow GDP on paper at any and all costs.
Also, protesting to the public/tourists, makes the government move faster. If you just protest to the politicians, things never get done. I am from Hawai'i.
@@kalaiolele8796 people can absolutely get things done protesting politicians/government buildings. And by not writing "TOURISTS GET OUT" on their signs, they might be taken more seriously.
@@MrCanalon No, it's not right to target individuals and it never will be. And not only is it not right, but it's not going to help the situation at all.
@@BigDome1So what if they protest to the government for years and nothing gets done. Do they fold their hands and accept their fate? I'm asking not because I'd like to be treated like this as a tourist but just to know what the alternative is if the government (as they claim) have done nothing for about 12yrs now.
Great video! Would love to see more videos like that, in comprehensible Spanish, about news or current hot topics in Spain. Much love, thanks for the vid.

Soy inglés y viajé a España hace poco.
Me has enseñado algo nuevo, Tim Moore. (No tuve ningún problema, the olde double negative, but not any, not no)
Buena suerte. En video muy bien y interesante.
A month ago I was looking for a video on this theme which I could understand and I found only news reports. Thanks for the video on an interesting topic!

I love Barcelona😢 Im Quarter Spanish from Philippines my grandparents and cousins are Spanish according to the them housing is very high in Barcelona now. They are part of that protest when I called them
I love Spain so much, my favorite country to visit as a tourist. Yes, Spaniards love the tourists and are open minded but they have to protect themselves otherwise the spaniard's culture will disappear slowly with the time also the spanish people lives is not getting better like any other extremely touristic countries. You are right 100 percent.
Dear Lucia, This rabbit hole runs really deep... But I completely agree with the concept of protecting your culture, the way of living and other values, especially your language and culinaries. The problem is the "mass" part of the tourism (we call it "Ibiza effect") and the effect of the money on people. Some people think they own the place just because they paid one weeks rent... I experienced that in certain places I had to drive 2 hours to find a section at the beach which was not a playground of the riches. I live in Spain since May and in general I received a very warm welcome and people were very patient while I struggled to communicate, and I met only one grumpy cat no matter how polite I wanted to be. (I think the Lucia-level of kindness is some end level achievement as it is so rare) I wanted to rent or rent-to-buy a house but I hit a lot of obstacles which sometimes didn't make any sense. Like sometimes the rent itself is more than the 50% of an average earning... While you have a lot of "shadow inventory" (houses, aparmants which are not listed to keep the supply low and the prices high) because there are a lot of wealthy individuals who have 10 or more real estate but the income of 2-3 apartmant is enough to support them, so they don't care if the rest stays empty. And I saw a lot of "flipped" listings where someone got a house for cheap, did some superficial but spectacular upgrades and wants to sell at overpriced rate. What I miss here is to phrase solutions (Capsule homes? Prefab houses? Modular homes? The tech is there... And for a tourist to spend a few weeks this could be a cheap solution.), everyone knows the problems, you don't need to repeat them. You need to spread the ideas of solutions. As I am not a Spaniard (yet) I do not take the liberty to come up with ideas, but usually the solution is fighting against greed and targeting sustainable (!) solutions and if the prices are high and you cannot mitigate the demand then you should quantitatively easen the supply. Revoking tourism licences is a good start to protect historical areas and as the govermnment could issue new ones in other areas to control the saturation. Only revoking and not issuing new ones will lead to grey market as the tourism demand will be there regardless the licenses. So maybe is would be beneficial not just fighting the old but building the new as well.
This was so interesting, I love going to Spain I just got back from San Sebastián, and I definitely noticed that compared to 10 years ago when I was a kid it was way less crowded, it’s hard to find a nice restaurant, and the beaches were absolute overcrowded. Great video. You speak in a way that is easy to understand. Well done! In Italy, we have the same problem, especially in Venice. It used to be a real city with real people living there. Now it is very difficult for locals to enjoy their own city. Venice has lost its soul 😢.

Valencian here! My town is also getting quickly overcrowded by tourism and rents have sky rocketed. Many ground floors in buildings in the neighborhood I used to live, between the city centre and the beach, are being destined to be tourist apartments instead of local shops. For instance, an old greengrocers had to shut down because the lessors increased the rent so that the renters were forced out. The reason: tourist apartments are much more lucrative. My opinion: ban tourist apartments. Ban Airbnb, Homeaway and the likes. That's it. Like in Barcelona. Sounds harsh but first of all is the locals welfare. You want to visit a city? Get yourself accomodation in a hotel. There's variety of prices. Btw I also disliked a lot those people firing water to tourists. It was really upsetting to me and most of the Spanish people.
I agree! I visit family every year in a super popular tourist town in the US and every year I go it seems like more and more family homes and apartments have become vacation rentals. It pushes out locals and causes housing prices to soar. But if you ban Airbnb and the like and have tourists stay at hotels (you know like everyone used to do 15 years ago), then this problem would most likely be solved. If there aren’t enough hotel rooms available in a certain tourist area then they will naturally have to visit at another time or different location. That used to be normal. I just hope that Spaniards supporting this anti-tourist message don’t use vacation rentals themselves when travelling abroad, otherwise that would be horribly hypocritical.
@@lmarts I think they could achieve a similar result without outright banning them, but limiting it to about 10% the number that it currently is. But yeah, residential areas should not become holiday resorts. It's ridiculous.

First of all, you are great! and sweet. I also live in Barcelona, I suffer from tourists and I agree with most of what you said except one.. the main one.. rent prices.. Rent prices are going up in the entire world, I don't think it is related to tourism. Also, most or maybe all the other reasons are direct - noise, garbage, water waste.. rent is indirect reason even if it is true
Great video! I was able to follow much more than I though I would! It's nice to know that my Spanish is improving. Just three months ago I was lucky enough to get to visit Madrid. I understand that Madrid isn't having the same kind of tourist issues as other parts of Spain. From my travels, I didn't encounter any negative issues with anyone local... everyone was so nice to me and very patient with my low-level Spanish. I do try to be a good tourist wherever I go though and respect the home of the local residents. I would want the same. As for the price of living in those areas where tourism is popular, that certainly is a problem that the Spanish government needs to figure out for the sake of their citizens (as well as any other tourist destinations). I hope that they do... as a tourist, I want to visit a community that is happy and proud to welcome tourists into their cities, but does not feel like they are being priced out of their homes for the sake of tourist dollars. I hope a balance can be found.
Great video format. I am a high-beginner or low-intermediate level Spanish learner, but the combination of Spanish subtitles plus definitions of some difficult words made the video very comprehensible for me. It’s not my country, so not really my business, but couldn’t those Spanish cities impose sales taxes on common tourist items to generate revenue for local government services? For instance a tax on hotel and AirBNB that tourists would mostly pay? That way your city generates the necessary revenue to manage tourism better, plus offset some of the pain that locals feel as a result of tourism?

Tens of thousands of Spaniards live here in Berlin. They all contribute to life becoming more and more expensive and there is no longer any housing. Isn't it still enriching that they are here? Should we all just stay in our own countries in the future? To be honest, I find it sad that many people in Spain are becoming more and more xenophobic. 🤷♂️
AirBnB seems part of the problem. Similar in UK. Those well off enough to own multiple properties, can make money renting holiday homes for far less effort than owning and running a hotel. AirBnB's can appear in places where they'd never get permission to build a hotel.
Tourism might be 13% of gdp for 2024, acording to Caixa. Spain can find a way to handle even halving tourism, as most of gdp is not tourism related, so Spain is not living from tourism.
What about illegal emigration? The tourist is paying on everything they doing but the illegal emigrants is living on the tax that the Spanish people paying…
No sentí hostilidad.
After living in Spain for 10 years, the problem here is greed. The spanish government has let things get out of control and has failed to protect the local economy for the spaniards. Ironically, the Spaniards then blame tourism, but this is after of course taking advantage of the tourists. So the government was greedy. The Spaniish citizens were greedy. Now, prices are souring and it is the fault of the tourist or companies like AirBNB. I love my life here.......but if it is something that I have learned, it is always someones elses fault here and the spaniards are fantanstic at coming up with reasons that sound irrefutable. Which is why problems don't get solved in Spain.

I am Australian, April this year I visited Spain. In Córdoba I visited the Mesquita, the queue to go inside was long, more than half way around the wall of the garden. I speak a little Spanish, most of the tourists in the queue were speaking Spanish (not all from South America). I had a to have a giggle, Spanish locals complaining about Spanish tourists. Love Spain BTW 🥰
Whole city centres turned into airbnbs , noise, litter, rowdy behaviour, the cost of rents rocketing, the locals expelled, university students finding it impossible to find accommodation in shared flats with the minimum commodities et cetera. These are protests against the neglect of the interests of Spanish nationals, against massive tourism at whatever cost, not against foreign visitors. In spite of some incidents involving deranged people (all nations have more than their fair share of those), we continue to be very welcoming folks.

In July I went to Mallorca for the first time and it was nice, just a bit crowded at times. I didn't see any protests or felt unwelcomed. I hope the government can step up regulations that would help locals. I believe this situation is mostly not the tourist's fault but rather a combination of inflation and the government's lack of regulations as given the opportunity I think your fellow Spaniard landlords or owners will do what they can to maximize profits. We stayed at a hotel and never use AirBnBs and I hope that helps.
Me encanta a viajar y experimentar otras culturas. Quiero visitar otra vez. ❤
The government doesn’t care whether tourism helps citizens, it cares whether tourism helps businesses. It’s businesses who lobby and make their voices heard and decide the media narrative that determines voting patterns of citizens
I fell in love with Spain when I met my ex. I've wanted nothing more than to go back and visit all the beautiful places after she took me to her home town in Madrid one time. Now I just feel so guilty at the idea of going back as I don't want to add to the problem. I have friends who say they're going to Spain and I try to educate them with what's going on but for some people it's hard to see past the sun and and holiday vibes. I really hope the people of Spain find a comfortable economy and environment to live in. Then I'll come to see your beautiful country again.
If you avoid the most typical tourism places you'll find the same thing and there won't be any problem. In fact, you'll probably have a better experience.

@@alexriddock177This is mostly happening in Barcelona and other massive beach tourism cities. Appart from the issue with Airbnbs, a lot of beach tourists have alcoholic behaviours, have problems follow rules, etc. So in Madrid we have less direct problems with tourism. There can be people against tourism because of Airbnb, but not a lot about direct behaviour of tourists
@@alexriddock177 Madrid doesn't have that problem. I mean, rent prices are also insane in Madrid, but it's not only because of tourism. There are many factors for it in Madrid. This is happening in Barcelona, Valencia, Mallorca, the coast towns at the South and the Canary Islands. Well... you get the point. Full on touristic spots.
Real estate price growth in Spain is partly explained by wealthy South Americans buying during and after COVID, not the tourism. Without the tourism the unemployment situation would be even worse than it currently is.
Seems like a compromise would be to have a certain proportion of the housing set for locals with growth in proportion to a national index, in Australia, we have consumer price index (CPI) based on the average of a basket of staple products, bread, milk, petroleum, ect. This figure is fed into pensions and wage rises, so for the last year with higher inflation it was 6.6%. It is supervised by treasury or finance department. So a city area might have 75% eg. 100,000 people resident + annual CPI. With 25% available for tourism. It is an issue world wide wealth drives money and money drives wealth, if you get my drift. I am not a demographer but I will look into it. Thanks for your hard work.
Thank you for covering this import and timely issue. I hope the Spanish government can listen to its citizens and limit visitors before they arrive and are mistreated.
We were going to go to Spain in April. I guess we will look for someplace else to go. I am learning Spanish as I live in Central America and was hoping to visit someplace that speaks it as well. I guess it will be Argentina instead.
Sad to hear you won't come to Spain 😢😢 I must say that in general you won't find any problems as a tourist and that you will be welcomed. Especially if you go to other cities outside of the ones I mention 👍🏼
Outlaw 50% of current 'entire apartments' for tourist rentals (by lottery) and encourage home stay style accommodation where you rent a room in someone's house or flat. Companies like AirBnB are ruining cultural capitals all over Europe where the locals can no longer afford to live in the cities they are from.
Better to ban 100% of short term rentals except for hotels, which actually use space efficiently. Sufficient housing supply-> Lower rents -> extra spending money in the hands of locals.

Si me permites, y discúlpame si me estoy excediendo, pero veo que quieres aprender: "tiempos verbales" (no "tensos" as "tenso" t 4:30 ranslates as tense, but only as in taut, or wound up) and "temas, materias, asuntos" not "tópicos". "Tópico" means "cliché" (among other things) .
So many people are taking vacations outside of their native country. As stated in this video, this creates real problems for the natives. I am sympathetic to their concerns. Perhaps cities that have very high numbers of tourists need to place some limits on the number of tourists allowed each year. But that may be very difficult to implement.
Sorry to hear, but the Spanish people come first. It is their country afterall. Do not sell land or property to foreigners. I do not visit a country to hear people speak English and serve American food. I want culture of that country. Otherwise, why come. I am fortunate to have visited Spain in the Mid-1970s for several years as part of my Naval service. I love the people, the music, the art, and the food.

Gracias por la palabra lugareños (locals). Me has enseñado algo nuevo, Tim Moore. (No tuve ningún problema, the olde double negative, but not any, not no)
Buena suerte. En video muy bien y interesante.

Dear Lucia,
This rabbit hole runs really deep...
(I think the Lucia-level of kindness is some end level achievement as it is so rare)
I wanted to rent or rent-to-buy a house but I hit a lot of obstacles which sometimes didn't make any sense.
Banning short term rentals is definitely the way to go.

Thank you for the very helpful video. It is so helpful for my Spanish language improvent and to see your perspective on this issue. Tourism is problematic in many areas of the UK too, for many similar reasons, for example towns in our beautiful Lake District 😢.
I do love visiting Spain as it is so beautiful, warm and helps improve my Spanish but tourism definitely needs to be controlled. Sadly I will not be visiting now, at least for a few years until the situation hopefully calms X

Estoy totalmente de acuerdo.

Se dice: ha habido muchos/as, hubo muchos/as, y habrá muchos/as,
AirBnB seems part of the problem. Similar in UK. Those well off enough to own multiple properties, can make money renting holiday homes for far less effort than owning and running a hotel. AirBnB's can appear in places where they'd never get permission to build a hotel.

No sentí hostilidad.
Yankee go home

Whole city centres turned into airbnbs , noise, litter, rowdy behaviour, the cost of rents rocketing, the locals expelled, university students finding it impossible to find accommodation in shared flats with the minimum commodities et cetera.
Defo Government + tourist fault. Take responsibility for how you travel
If you stayed in a hotel rather than for example an abnb then you didn’t take part in making peoples lives worse

Oh it also cares about supporting asset prices which as often as not harms more citizens than it helps

Was incredible, the strong and long economic boom in the US following the reduction of housing costs that occurred a dozen years ago or so
Si me permites, y discúlpame si me estoy excediendo, pero veo que quieres aprender: "tiempos verbales" (no "tensos" as "tenso" t 4:30 ranslates as tense, but only as in taut, or wound up) and "temas, materias, asuntos" not "tópicos".
