It's got everything: beach, castle, great restaurants, amazing market, nightlife, history (the Spanish Republic ended here). It's definitely the most underrated city in Spain.

I was in Alicante city in January and I really love it . I am undecided between Alicante and Valencia for retirement . I would love to watch a video comparing both cities .Keep up the good work .:))))
I'm coming at it from a UK point of view...maybe its different if you live elsewhere...but I think that the only thing we knew about Spain for decades was as a cheap tourist destination based around the Costa del Sol. Even in the 90s and 00s we learnt about Ibiza and Marbella...but only as upscale party destinations. Since the late 00s/early 10s we have started to realise just how amazing Spain is...especially for its food. Where previously we only knew about paella...then some basic tapas...we now know places like San Sebastian represent the highest level of culinary brilliance in Europe, if not the world. One day people will start realising that Spanish Cava is as good as champagne...and much better than prossecco...just as it became obvious how much better iberico bellota is compared to prosciutto!
The thing is that the Spanish don´t show off and if people want to know more about their food and culture, they have to come to Spain and not just read what the tabloids say about Spain and about what it is like. The British tabloids succeeded in labelling Spain according to some stereotypes they imposed on it, as they do with everything.
James I’m so happy you finally visited Alicante City! I was in your first Spain Masterclass and the only person interested in Alicante. It wasn’t even on your radar at that time. I absolutely loved living in Alicante City!
I’m a Brit living the good life in Mijas Costa (Malaga). This has been a true education. I had the wrong impression of Alicante. We’re going to visit soon. Thanks.
Alicante City has everything in my opinion. I was there last week. It was my 5th visit. Close to the airport, beaches, restaurants, bars, marina, market etc. Not touristy at all.
Fantastic video James. Thank you for sharing it with us. I love Alicante. I have both lived and worked there. I love it. Can't wait for your next broadcast.😀👍
Alicante is truly a piece of heaven on earth. Let’s keep it like this. I am from and live in Alicante. Therefore I may be somewhat biased, Alicante is a beautiful city, no too big but has everything a large city has. The food and restaurants just outstanding, great nightlife obviously being on the Med Coast, but also peace and quiet if wanted, many places to visit either in the city itself or very near. Great public transport to run around without having to drive. Truly a place to create many great and positive memories. People are friendly and nobody is out after cheap scams like many other places. Come and see for yourselves , June and September are great months to enjoy Alicante.
Hola James, what a great video, thank you so much for it ! Alicante looks really beautiful, the city, the beaches, the people and the food. Thanks a lot for sharing ! I really hope that yourself, Yolly and Lucia are doing well.
For people who find walking uphill difficult opposite the platja de postiguet beach there is a tunnel that leads to a lift (ascensor del castell) which takes you to the castle.
At timecode 1:01 is the Central Market. Don’t miss the kiosk on the left of the main entrance. They sell among the best chocolate and the best turron I’ve ever bought, at very reasonable prices.
Thanks for the video. We have friends who live in the province (Almoradí, Guardamar del Segura) but have only driven through the city, Try the arroz con costra. It's as if a rice dish (not paella!) and a tortilla had a baby. ¡Delicioso!
Thanks de or sharing such an amazing experience in Alicante, I absolutely love every single region of Spain , I should say it in a better way : I Love Spain 🇪🇸❤️❤️
Yes, interesting video but exactly my thought: Alicante underrated?! After Malaga and Valencia, it seems the most hyped part of Spain (based on "moving to/retiring to/living in Spain" groups I've joined). Not saying it isn't lovely and, who knows, maybe I'll end up there. But undiscovered or un-hyped, compared to so many other glorious areas? Definitely not.
So wonderful that you came and that my city blew your mind away. That's what it does to people in regular basis. I came here for work 9 years ago, expecting absolutely nothing and 9 years later I keep falling in love with this city and with the entire province. Glad you put it out there
After COVID, I thought I had to fulfill a dream and at least try living in Spain. I bought a one-way ticket with Ryanair, and now I've been here for three years and haven't regretted a second. Wonderful city. Wonderful people.love Alicante ❤
Before even watching this video I have to say I’m amazed that Alicante is underrated because it is stunninggg. I have been to basically all the top popular Spanish cities and then I spent a month in Alicante and I loved it so much, I miss it sooo much. To me, it’s quite important to have a beach nearby on vacation and Alicante delivered immensely, also you have access to several other neighbouring cities on the coastline that are to die for!! I just feel like it’s crazy for Alicante to be overlooked, I can’t rave enough about it
We absolutely loved Alicante when we visited! It really surprised us as we thought it would be a touristy coastal town, but the authenticity of the city blew us away! Wonderful video, James!
Great video. I visited Alicante for the first time this past April and was pleasantly surprised. I have always avoided thinking it was just a tourist trap but I found it lovely. I love a mercado, so I was in heaven and the food at Sento was fantastic.

Alicante is indeed a very nice city. I have been living in Altea for 23 years now and I was regularly in Alicante for my work as a real estate agent. In the hinterland of the Comunidad Valencia there are many nice authentic villages such as Biar, Villena, Jijona, Ontinyent, Busot, Tarbena, Pinoso and Jalon. Palmeras, Alfafara and Alzira in the Albufera Natural Park, the rice mining area around Valencia. Worth a visit.
Alicante looks like a great place to eat wonderful food and walk around historic sites. Nice to see so many there to make sure you enjoyed the trip. Thanks James for taking us along.
I am fairly well travelled around Spain, And been a fan of yours for quite a while. But this year we holidayed in Xabia, And enjoyed it so much we have a villa rental for a few months next year. We plan to use the tram system to travel into Alicante, James this is a gift for me already researching the city. Magical
We were on a cruise which due to the Middle East got diverted to port at Alicante early january , We were amazed at how nice the place was and compared to Tenerife the market had much better quality produce, far more selection and lower prices.. Its a lovely place tbf.
Love Alicante, it has a lot to offer. Our last visit coincided with the San Juan fiesta - amazing. Such a pity many just land at the airport and don’t stay around to explore
I miss your tours. I have been out of touch due to an accident, but I search for all your videos often. It's great to see how big and beautiful Lucia is. All the best... All good at my end now.
My favourite type of your videos (and I love them all!). 😊 Food, history, culture, perfect. Wish you'd visited Almería as that's my next destination and there aren't good English speaking videos that I can find. If Alicante is not on a bucket list, Almería seems even less considered.
Amazing timing on this video! When I was planning my Spanish trip in January this place caught my eye. I will literally be in Alicante in less than 3 weeks
I applied for a semester abroad in Alicante. I've never been there and was unsure if it was the right decision, but now that I've seen the videos I'm very happy if it works☀️
I’ll be heading there again but this time to Alicate and Valencia in September can’t wait. Wish I could bumped into you guys. Question what’s the name or this Mercado
It’s the Mercado Central, located on Av Alfonso el Sabio and La Rambla Mendez Nuñez. Be aware that it closes early afternoon, 13h or 14h, depending on the day.
Beautiful, James ! Very comforting to my soul ! Thank you for this video, no, this moving picture of timelessness. I will never forget the esplanade of palm trees. You know, Apollo was born under a bronze palm tree on the island of Delos. Of course, you already know that ! If I was able to travel again without dying of a blood clot, I'd fly to Alicante, visit those churches, walk between the palm trees, sit by the beach, and hang out at the market eating tapas every day. All the best from Australia, amigo !
I live down the coast in Murcia in a small village, 45 minutes drive from Alicante. We go up a lot, usually spending a night there. There are some amazing Plazas with unusual trees from South America, complete with hanging lianas and other cool stuff, sometimes there are dance classes for old people, dancing under the trees in these squares with bars and places around. Plaza Paseíto Ramiro is one example, the best is likely Plaza Portal de Elche.
I used to live in Alicante and now that i am in Canada i miss the city everyday, it's the perfect combination of a city that is not to big or small, laid back but also exiting. The only problem there is that there is not a lot of work opportunity, i hope to go back and raise my kids there!
Thanks James and Ali-Oli Tours.. Alicante looks amazing, I've only spent a few hours there on the way to the airport. Wish I'd have known how cool it is and could have planned a stay there. Another place to add to my list of holiday destinations. Thanks for sharing! 🙂😋😎❤
Beautiful tour of Alicante. There are two things I noticed. Your last shot, at the top of the cadle, in front of a watch point. Is exactly like " La Garita del Diablo. In El Morro Castle in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The other thing is how much they like rice. We have rice and chicken rice and pork, rice and geen peas, and ricce and squid. Delicioso.
I wonder if Alicante has really upped its game since my in-laws lived down the coast from there? I don't remember there being a tram to Denia, but we did enjoy the Esplanade, the market and it was very vibrant with the street market in the evenings. The summer we were there was the hottest on record, so we preferred exploring the beaches and mountains rather than the big towns. You certainly did a lovely job of showing off its considerable assets, I think it looks much more sophisticated than I remember it, which is encouraging - I liked it for it's authenticity. If you ever get the chance, you might try somewhere very low key - Chipiona, sticking out into the Atlantic, north of Cadiz - would be fascinated to see how it's fairing. Happy travels, James & John!
James, if you are in this part of Spain again, pay a visit to Calpe. Its around 45 mins north of Alicante centre by car (1hr from airport), beautiful little town
James, thank you for this lovely video. Everytime I watch one of your videos I feel I should explore and appreciate my own country more!!😀 Alicante esperame que vengo!!😀

Great video. Congratulations. You know Spain better than me (smile)
Saludos desde Salamanca, España.
Just like you - we stopped in Alicante on the way to Marbella and totally fell in love with Alicante. Going back this August! 💕
We’ve loved Alicante for years such a laid back vibe,
My favourite type of your videos (and I love them all!). 😊 Food, history, culture, perfect. Wish you'd visited Almería as that's my next destination and there aren't good English speaking videos that I can find. If Alicante is not on a bucket list, Almería seems even less considered.
Would love to visit Almeria :)
That place looks amazing! I need to go there.
@@esanford5muchísimas gracias.
OMG, I'm from Alicante myself but live in UK. I've been drooling for the entire video
Alicante, esta creada para amarla!!🧡🧡💛💛💚💚💙💙💜💜🤎🤎🤍🤍❣❣💔💔
i love Alicante , food, vibe and people in this city are incredible! So underrated because it's maybe the not prettiest.
The city does need to clean itself up.
Love Alicante, had a lot of friends from there. You should visit Cartagena, I bet you’ll love it
Thank you! I love my Alicante. But a taxi from Mercado Central to Santa Cruz? How old are you? That's a ten minutes walk, at most. 😄
Exactly! Crazy.
You really showed Alicante from the best site. Great video. I would have also included the Espanada. It's great too.
It was in the video briefly.
Thank you!
James, when Nancy & I visited Alicante, our AirBnB was a small sailboat. Loved the town.
James you have made me NEED to go to Alicante! Just like you i haveskippedit the 2 times I've been to Spain but no more. This is a must do now!
haha, have a great trip!
I live here during the summer months and I’ve been waiting for a video like this
Alicante also has a first class archaeology museum MARQ not far from the city centre.
Thanks for the inspiration: Alicante, here I come!
Alberto and Rebecca at AliOli are amazing!! Happy to see you working with them dude. Alicante is an awesome city. ❤
My city!!!! Glad you enjoyed your stay and not only visited the center of the city!
We went to Alicante 2 years ago and love it. I was so surprised that this region has not been discovered. I love it
Had thr pleasure if visiting last yr. Must say Alicante and surrounding area are absolutely amazing. Will visit again
As an expat who specifically chose Alicante, 100% loving your video! Shared it with all my fellow-Alicantinos (both native and 'imported' ones 🙂
Looks amazing. I've started vlogging too! You guys are a great inspiration! Thank you for sharing :)
I've been all over Spain, but not here. I will go here some day! Let's Go Spain Euro 2024 🇪🇸 😎
Thank you for this wonderful video of the city I was born, raised and still living here!
James, if you are in this part of Spain again, pay a visit to Calpe. Its around 45 mins north of Alicante centre by car (1hr from airport), beautiful little town
Family went here for years, i visited first in 2016 and went yearly until corona. Great place! Just viaited alone in 2023 and was hit with nostalgia.
James, thank you for this lovely video. Everytime I watch one of your videos I feel I should explore and appreciate my own country more!!😀 Alicante esperame que vengo!!😀
Gracias Maria!
Went there last month for the first time and loved it!!
Another great video james thank you very much 👍
As a foreigner who also lives in Madrid, exploring Spain's different regions is one of the most fun things about this country. And boy do they know how to eat in the south
mmmmm We eat much better in the north
3:22 this ‘cucumber like’ vegetable is famous in Lebanon 🇱🇧.. It is called Me2té … I donno how to give a pronunciation for the 2 .. it’s just like the A in Alicanté..
I fell in love with Alicante on a standard UK package holiday to Benidorm a long time ago. I stopped going to Benidorm, I go to Alicante instead. I just love the place. I'd love to live there. It's so great to just hang out.
