Nick M Any cover/interpretation is open to question by listeners and especially so when an award winning 'classic' gets the treatment from a post-punk power pop band. But I've always felt that Carter's version, for all its camp-ness, is more emotive than any other and a great choice for a cover by a band of acknowledged wordsmiths like them. I'd suggest you listen to it in context within The Love Album, the segue from Skywest and Crooked into TID and along the loop back into 1993, the first track on side 1. These lads weren't idiots; far from it. Unfortunately Mitch Leigh is no longer with us and so unable to offer his opinion but I suspect he would give it the thumbs up.
This is the most amazing version of this song, bringing it forward into our contemporary world.
