  • Pitch framing has been proven to be extremely valuable. But let's quantify it to show how valuable framing one pitch can be, and show the value of Austin Barnes, LA's backup catcher extraordinaire.

Austin Barnes is one of the most underrated and most humble player ever

I feel so conflicted over the automatic strike zone. Like, obviously we love batters and pitchers being justly rewarded, but also it will be sad to see the weird skills of guys like Barnes, Hedges, Mathis etc disappear 😪

This is one of the reasons I’m still conflicted about the automated strike zone.
On the one hand, it levels the playing field and takes away the capacity for a bad umpire to do damage.
But on the other hand, players like Austin Barnes are examples of how pitch framing is an art, and I’d be sad to see it lost.

It’s such a boring skill tho. One benefit of the automated k zone would be catcher becoming a more offensive which I think we would all like to see.

Agreed! (I just wrote essentially this comment haha) It’s such a cool under-appreciated skill and gives more defensive players a role in MLB. Will be sad to see catcher defense decrease in value

I think it would be very interesting to see a video or paper on just HOW much damage a bad umpire can do, cause honestly I think I am not really for the auto-k zone

@@logansvideos95 That's a good point. And there will obviously be issues with the robo-ump, if it becomes a reality. Sweeping sliders from left-handers that just grab a part of the outside corner against the left-handed batter, but end up in the RH batter's box when caught by the catcher will look awful if called a strike. Does Andrew Miller to David Ortiz pitch, according to K-Zone at the time, was a strike.

Great Video. Austin is my favorite Dodger. Is there a metric that backs up why it appears that a defense first catcher seems to matter more in the post season? Like, during the playoffs, there is just a feeling that if we are in a must win game, Barnes needs to be behind the plate. Or is this just an illusion?

How did I not know about you before. Great video, shout out Barnes for knocking Snell out when it mattered most

Excellent video as always. I’ll definitely be sad to have automated umpires, since I love watching catchers sneak one by.
