    Happy to have stumbled upon your videos. I have thought about these issues for nearly half my life (going on 58 yrs. now) and found myself struggling with the problem of "humanity," and their wants (and beliefs) and needs, getting in the way of finding utopia. Using the good old raw "Maslow's Triangle" everyone would be fine with getting onboard with making the "right" choices, but . . . we are mostly polygons when it comes to wants and needs. Of course, that's what makes us creative too; and destructive as well. Hmmm. . . So, we will keep trying to find utopia (which we will ultimately reject) and flounder about, while at the same time create even more ingenious ways of exterminating ourselves. But on the flip side, every few generations or so comes a grok-think that suspends our execution date in order for us to expand our intellect that buys us some more time. Here's to hoping that the next generation will carry us forward!

    With efficient nuclear fusion, and a whole lot of engineering; colonizing the solar system and sending out generation starships around the stellar neighborhood, is complicated but practical. That would keep us busy and keep us from strangling the Earth's resources.

  • @sethapex9670
    @sethapex9670 9 років тому

    in the first few nanoseconds after the big bang there were no particles like electrons or quarks, only energy. after space expanded somewhat, the energy condensed into those particles and hydrogen formed. some hydrogen atoms became gravitationally attracted to each other, possibly aided by a non-uniform distribution of dark matter. eventually enough hydrogen was gathered to ignite fusion in the first stars. after the hydrogen in those stars was exhausted they started fusing helium into everything up to oxygen, then all the way up to iron, at which point the star could not fuse the iron because it doesn't produce enough energy to perpetuate the fusion so the stars began to collapse, and some were massive enough that they actually did and formed black holes, some collapsed into neutron stars, but some of the less massive ones exploded into supernovae and the iron they had produced was bombarded by hundreds of smaller elements, producing larger and larger elements up to the actinide series. later all those materials collapsed into new stars again, and again until they produced disks of materials from which our solar system formed.

    Yesterday i thought about how there hasn't been a video from you in some time (and i definitely don't do that every day :) ) and today i see that you've just put a new one up.
    Often when i learn a new subject (anything, a specific thing about biology, economics, even a new word) it will get used around me in very near future (few days), maybe i'll hear something related to it on the news or something, the point is, i'd never heard about it before.
    Sometimes i think of changes and ideas that could work out in a particular field, and then they magically get implemented over the upcoming weeks (like a small patch to a software or something).
    So am i being spied on by the whole world? What's going on? Do other people have this feeling/situation? Is this a discussed/analysed phenomenon that has an official name? Or is there just a high enough chance for these coincidences to occur frequently?

      Actually it has more to do with selective deletion of events that are not important I think. All the topics and all the ideas are out there, we just tend to ignore them till they have some significance to us. Like I plan on buying a Lancer soon, so now when I'm out driving I tend to see atleast 5-8 Lancers on every trip. Which is highly possible only because my mind tends to look out for them, and I believe thats the same concept with ideas.

    I think overall it would still be positive. On the one hand it would make some problems worse, but it would also vastly improve the living situations in countries in need. As you said, providing clean water for everyone would become a lot easier.
    But the big advantage that I see is that nearly unlimited energy would also make solving our problems easier overall. In many cases the rate at which technology advances is limited by the amout of energy that we can provide for it.

  • @deisisase
    @deisisase 9 років тому +2

    Birthrates are dropping so population will eventually stabilize, some think this would occur at 9 billion people. And because birthrates are dropping Population might actually fall in the next generation. But you make a good point with unlimited wanted and needs, we will still need to put a limit for the reasons you listed.

    • @SSladfingers
      @SSladfingers 9 років тому

      deisisase Well it's debatable that with dropping population, some implemented policies, and the fact that infinite wants and needs is somewhat misleading(people have limits on that too, surpringly) then it's quite possible we could find a sustainable lifestyle. He's nitpicking.

    Consider the big energy picture of the Earth: Sun sends energy to Earth as photons and neutrinos. Some neutrino energy may be absorbed by the interior while sunlight is absorbed by photosynthetic life that has evolved to absorb and store solar energy. Surface life has also evolved to transmit stored energy underground, so you could say the Earth has evolved a mechanism for capturing solar energy and internalizing it as core heat.
    What does the planet do with this core energy/heat? 1) powers a magnetic shield that protects the surface mechanism for energy-capture and internalization 2) powers flows of magma that drive tectonic shifts and the building of new land and pushing up mountain ranges such as the Himalayas. So, compared with Venus, Earth has evolved to cool its surface by absorbing energy underground and utilizing it to create altitude differentiation despite the weathering trend that otherwise erodes land into the oceans.
    But what happens to this chain of energy if artificial energy sources are added to the point of overheating the biosphere and killing off the surface-energy capture system? At that point, the core would gradually cool, the magnetic field would cease to shield the ground from cosmic rays, and the desertified land would either erode into the oceans or the water from the oceans would seep into cavities left when the core cooled.
    If any life would survive, it would have to be underground and presumably the land above the underground oceans would gradually erode and collapse forcing the water back to the surface, where it could gradually begin to re-evolve photosynthetic life, which could re-initiate the process of capturing surface-energy and storing it underground. When enough fossil fuel deposits formed, gravitational pressure and neutrino absorption could bring the core back to a molten state after a very long time. This would result in new tectonic movement and the formation of new mountain ranges, which would dam atmospheric water vapor and cause it to rain down, so land trees and plants would flourish allowing ocean life to evolve into land-dwelling species, and eventually a new intelligent species could evolve to harness the power of fusion to once again undermine the balance of energy, killing off the biosphere and setting into motion the whole sequence of core-cooling once again.

    If we could find a way to take that unlimited amount of energy, story enough it in a single point to were that energy would create matter, could we have an unlimited energy supply with unlimited resources there by solving one problem. But then we still have to deal with the amount of area we can cover, and that could be solved with space travel and colonization.

    @SpaceCakeism 6 років тому

    First of all: I'm no scientist, or mathematician, or engineer, I'm simply a guy, that is interested in a lot of stuff;
    which includes a lot, of different fields of science. This ultimately means that some of my statements, are not necessarily possible, and/or correct, but the same applies to the term"unlimited energy;" though, as I've noted later, and it's not to debunk the video, as I understand the purpose of using the term. I also want to add, that I'm choosing, not to address the problem of humanity's unlimited wants and needs; as I really don't have any solution to that. Though, it's not, as if my comment, has any sort of solution, to anything; it's merely to expand on something, that was said in the video, due to it being an interesting topic.
    In all technicality, though mass energy is limited, dark energy is, as far as we currently know, not limited...
    In fact it keeps growing, at an accelerating rate,,without our interference; which in short, tells me, and probably anyone else:
    That it is not the actual space, that will run out, but rather about how efficient we can use mass energy,
    to house as many people (and/or animals, and/or other organisms) as possible.
    Hence, one of the more unlikely ideas I got from that, would be to... "redesign" the earth to a point where it,
    would still be able to hold onto it's atmosphere, and keep photosynthesis a thing;
    but the result would be a much larger planet, with a lot less density, kinda like a sponge.
    Also, there is the fact, that the larger something is, the less surface area it is going to have;
    which mean, that even though our surface could technically fit 1,48x10^14 ( 7:45 )there would still, (technically)
    be more than enough matter to house, probably several times that, if we could use all the matter inside our planet.
    Though this would come with a lot of complications, with unlimited energy, it would most definitely be possible:
    Technically this would unlock a lot of mass energy that is currently, and maybe, won't ever do any work,
    and will just sit there losing its energy to the 2nd law of thermodynamics.
    (Excluded the work, of keeping the earth, mostly, at it's current current configuration, and all of the complications, that it entails.)
    Please also note that I am purposely avoiding "talking" (writing) about the would be problems, in said scenario;
    simply because there would be a lot, and that I probably can't even imagine more than a small fraction of them.
    Besides, most of the resources we would want, could be minable from asteroids and comets,
    and even our planetary neighbours; even though there is a limit to the maximum mass energy in the universe,
    it is not necessarily being used the most efficient way, and the same goes for much of the mass energy,
    that is beneath earth's surface, that is not being used, and is probably not going to be used, ever.
    (Again, excluding the work, of keeping the Earth... Earthlike)
    Anyway, my main point is, no matter how you how you turn or twist logic;
    there is, as far as we know, a limit amount of mass energy in the universe,
    even if it isn't a limit amount matter, without superluminal travel:
    There is going to be, a limit to how much matter we can possibly interact with,
    hence making usable space, and/or energy a finite resource.
    I guess, in the end, it will all depend on how efficient, we can possibly make any system/process;
    rather than trying to satiate infinity, it'd be a better idea, to try to, get the most out of what we have, and what we can get.
    P.S.
    By "work," I simply mean, anything humans want to use it for, it it's standing on, or fusion; it doesn't really matter,
    the point of this, was simply to remind you, that there's a lot of mass energy, on this planet, that's locked away underground.
    Although mining can bring stuff to the surface, it's just a fraction of the entirety of the planet, even if a lot of that matter is extremely hot, that heat is technically energy that would add into the system; though, with unlimited energy, that'd be negligible.
    I would also like to add, that you cannot get more energy than there is mass energy to create;
    hence the term "unlimited energy," is somewhat inconceivable, (As from my understanding: Unlimited ≈ Infinite.)
    though I understand the use of it for thought experiments, teaching and such.
    Also, I feel I need to apologize, for this rant-like, comment, that's as long as an essay;
    however, I found the topic very interesting, and felt like weighing in, with my own thoughts on the subject.

    the universe is a massive place. and earth is only so small. but we do grow is logoritmic way. but i believe at the time we have colonised the whole universe, we whould have the thechnologie to make new universe and spread to other universes aswell. so in a multiverse we have something called infinity. and that whould solve our problem once and for all.
    but for the shorter future. we could use fussion to creat elements we need that can no longer be mined. than the only resource we will ever need is hydrogen.

      Maksim Banin You don't need to "get rid of" anyone. If you limit couples to one child then the population goes down and even two children per couple will still have the population go down though at a much slower rate.
      The biggest problem is actually enforcing these restrictions. That's a whole new world of moral complications.

    One megawatt is enough for a happy sustainable life of a human in its current biological form. A really luxurious life, might I add. We may not need that much to be happy, you can optimize this number a lot. But it's a good round number for working with populations.
    You put the problem of sustaining our needs and population as if it is some kind of hard problem, but it's really not.
    We have already found out how to control population growth, we aren't rats. In fact, we kinda have a problem of no growth, but it's a whole other topic.
    Although it is true that in our current society we tend to overuse avalable resourses, I'd say it comes from our missunderstanding of our psychology and our current culture of consumerism. A lot of studies have shown that after a certain point(about 25k $ per yer i think) happines doesnt increase. So can limit our consumption and still be happy.

    If we're speaking efficiency, if the universe and the nature of, well, nature, being to become more and more efficient until it is in it's most efficient form, wouldn't that mean the least amount of energy and resources being used to sustain performance: would that not mean nature's end will come in the form of perfect efficiency that resembles the largest possible solid object that fills the void of infinity? Being as an infinitely large singularity? Containing all possible information that obey all possible laws of any kind of physics, meaning, everything exists, meaning it already is. Baring in mind, the only thing the universe can learn about is all forms of itself.

  • @xXxwolfmanxXx101

    Humans indeed aren't rats and our population dynamics work in complete reverse I.E the more resources you give humans and birth rates go down while if you give them less resources birth rates go up due to child mortality rates going up because of the lack of recourses. This is putting it bluntly no fusion means the poorest countries cant keep their lights on so their children cant study at night and become doctors or anything constructive so no hospitals get built so people have loads of kids because their kids keep dying and the problem repeats its self. Giving the poorest countries fusion will help curb the population crisis but still as you said to save humanity requires humanity.

    Resources are invented. More people means more inventions means more resources.
    Also, your population chart doesn't tell the whole story. The greatest population growth is in the poorest countries. The data show that as people get richer, population growth slows.

    What's the basic need people want to have kids. People want to have positive experiences in life. A developed country can provide much more to people in terms of happiness, contentment or hedonistic pleasures. They don't just have to find a meaning in their life by becoming parents.

    I would be interesting in seeing what a day in your country is like, because I ignorantly judge those countries to be inferior to countries like the US in its intellectuals. But you've broken that stereotype to pieces. (Thank you for making me look realized I thought like an ignorant ass) So I'd be interested to what an average day is like for you. Wouldn't really fit the format of your videos, but it'd still be enjoyable. Fun to watch, as always.

    The problem with your scenario is the use of unlimited. Of course with unlimited energy you can create space, starting by terraforming venus, that does not have an Ocean. With unlimited energy, you can create new quarks and build new Atoms (or starts) and change the geometry of space-time and stop the expansion of the universe of even better fill the expanded universe with more material stuff. In fact, if we are close to understanding the universe, with the exception of the unlimited energy source bit, we can grow indefinitely. The Universe expands faster than light and we could fill all that space with more and more synthetic matter for ever, not caring if is efficient or not. Just go "slow" so that you don't change the cosmological constand or overcome dark energy. Of course, as far a we can tell there is no such unlimited energy source and we can go back to Nuclear Fusion and care about reality. Then the video's argument is solid.

  • @blackfrancis33
    @blackfrancis33 9 років тому

    I really enjoy these videos, but have you looked at population decline in wealthier nations? In fact, there is a very strong negative correlation between GDP per capita and children per family. It would be my guess, that in a world with an unlimited energy supply, the population as whole would stabilize and possibly even decline.

  • @danuk500
    @danuk500 8 років тому

    Well nuclear fusion will hopefully allow us to travel faster than the speed of light because we'll have unlimited power. So we'll be able to colonise other planets and use the resources too. Of course we'd still eventually hit these problems but it'll still take a while. Not my problem haha.

  • @kdavis45

    Still a limit but humans could always "ascend" into a virtual state....think the matrix movie or a more accurate analogy think the movie Tron (or the more recent movie transcendence). But ultimately there is always a space limit even with a virtual reality (which must still exist with a physical platform footprint host)
    But it's not about a perfect solution or population dynamics. Any organism left unchecked WILL eventually consume its environment. Doesn't mean we can't be smart enough to self check. China already has a one child law and if we ever found a cure for death (even without unlimited resources) that would completely change population dynamics to the point where we would need to self check our population growth (or even eliminate reproduction altogether)

    lol, and this is why I can't seem to get on terms with how other humans think
    "what would you do with X amount of money if you would get it?"
    simple, keep it but keep living my life as I do now, sure there are things I want, but that does not mean I Need to buy them just course I have the money. What I need, are basics to just survive, luxury is not a necessity.
    Money can't buy what I want to have from life.
    my needs require money, but my wants are impossible to for-fill regardless even if I had all the money in the world.

    If the universe is never ending and there's unlimited amount of energy then accomplishing is our unlimited wants is like a walk in the park but we would have to consume that "unlimited energy" efficiently like not setting our house on fire when you could of used the same out of fire you used to set your house on fire to cook some chicken for dinner. So in the end universe + energy = unlimited wants being accomplished.

    Sharkee: Nuclear Fusion is upon us, that's unavoidable. And you are right in suggesting that this would lead to population pressures. However, there is and will be a solution found for this hypothetical problem. And the solution lies in the man's propensity to wage war and inflict untold violence in pursuit of a selfish goal. In such world, population will be controlled by the few, the elite. And excessive breeding being one of the few remaining major issues, one-child or none-at-all policies will be enforced by said elite to the fullest extent of their powers, we can be certain of that. And if I were honest with you, I'm not sure which camp I would rather choose to be in. I'd err on side of survival.

      @alquinn8576 8 років тому

      Tuni Q
      OK, maybe semantics then, but I would consider France's implementation of nuclear power to be successful. The US and Germany would also qualify in my opinion, though on a smaller scale.
      There are a variety of reasons the technology is not more pervasive in the areas mentioned but most of those are based on irrational fears due to the conflation of nuclear power to nuclear weapons, NIMBYism, and fear of a possible accident even though coal-based power is more likely to kill more people over the long run (coal mining accidents, especially prevalent in China until recently, and air quality effects that shorten and reduce the quality of life--not to mention the CO2 released). The underlying technology of nuclear plants is solid, though I'm not well-read on the economics of nuclear vs the falling cost of solar and wind power.

    • @TuniQ
      @TuniQ 8 років тому

      Very true, even the so called Green party in my home country seams to rebuke nuclear power even though it will help the environment and the economy massively more than manufacturing thousands of solar panels and windmills in massive factory's.

  • @CraftyF0X

    Nuclear fusion being unlimeted energy source is a false assumption, at least its false if you insist strictly on the meaning of the word. However it is more than likely It would have the transformative effects on humanity similar to what you described, so for all intents and purposes we can think of it as unlimited source, but I just wanted to be clear on that it actually isn't. As for the evergrowing unlimited wants, I would propose the use of virtual realities which could satisfy immense "needs" without imposing too much load on the physical enviroment, including resources, spaces, and other enviromental factors. A sufficiantly advanced virtual reality could give a person the simulation of any wants without the expenses that the actual wish would take. (creating an astronaut simulator is much easier task than putting real ppl into real orbit)

      +Daniel Weinberger (DTUB) That is a chemical reaction involving electron sharing, Fusion is nuclear and about 15 million times more energetic. Which means it's 15 million times more energy dense than chemical potential energy.
      (In a typical Deuterium-Tritium cycle, you get 1 super hot 3.5 Megaelectron volt helium atom and about 14 megaelectron volts worth of neutrons)
      1 problem with fusion is that only the 3.5 MeV helium is usable for thermal energy, it's those neutrons that pose both radiation risks and shielding cost.
