He could use catgut without any issues, like a marching snare does. You can get good catgut snare cord in 48" lengths for about $10, or get 20 feet for about $50. All he would need is a marching snare throw off, which isn't difficult to acquire.

I did this same project a few times in the past. About 7 years ago I converted an old 20"×12" marching bassdrum I had into a "megabass snare" for an 1980's over the top "cannon shot" type snare effect I needed for a demo track I was writing/recording & it was actually a pretty unique drum lol. I connected 2 10" snare strands from a couple of popcorn snares I made once & made it fit the 20" snare side pretty good! eventually I ended up making it into a drum coffee table for my studio/mancave lol. I dig your videos & money saving tips & ideas for the starving drummers out there! I've rebuilt, customized & messed around with percussion and other instruments since I was 8 years old & still love the gitty feeling I get when I'm working on a drum project or find an old drum kit at a yard sale for cheap so I can restore it & give it new life or resell it & make a lil $$ :)

I really like the snare drum man. It sounds good. I have a request though. Can you make a video of different pitch tuning (low/mid/high) without muffling and then the same different pitch tuning with muffing. I would love to hear how dynamic it can be. (after you get the new head of course.) :D

Great video with some AWESOME ideas! My favorite (since no one asked) is the rim conversion. Great idea since some places charge twice as much for snare side rims.

I just made a 14x 10 steel drum. I rolled it rather than casting it (I don't have a foundry that burns at 2,500 degrees) it didn't come out amazing but it works. some of the lug holes are slightly off. next time I'm going to do a free floating snare so I have less to mess up on.

This drum sounds great! Just try to get some custom Remo bottoms for it, just ask your local drum shop, as Remo makes almost any size and type on special order, but just be prepared for the price, about 60 - 80 $ per head, depending on the size.

Great build! For less than the price of whatever the cheapest overpriced piece of junk they have at Guitar Center, you've got a totally unique snare with tons of character. Definitely need to put a new resonant head on it. I tried a resonant tom head on one of my snares once and had similar issues. No sensitivity, hard to tune, etc. Loved the build and looking forward to your next project.

Next time you do something like that, instead of cutting the snare gate out for a strap, just drill two holes for blind cord. As one can imagine it's easier and keeps a lot more meat in the area. Just a thinker for those that like to tinker.
