well to be honest the priest in question was already suspected by the Church as a deviant, and had been "exiled" from Loudun once already for a known scandal in which he had knocked up some of the local churchgoers, but the Mother Superior of the nuns managed to overturn this by giving the priest a posting as spiritual advisor for the local convent, where he obviously got even worse. The nuns confessing to deviant practices caused by him, devil pact or not, was just the final nail on the coffin To give you an idea of how much of a big deal it had become, Cardinal Richelieu himself (yes, THAT Richelieu of Three Musketeers fame) had gotten involved to put a stop to such libertine practices. And if even Richelieu came down from his place at the side of the throne of France to lay the law on you, well you screwed up majestically (and literally)
