- I tour the Milorganite plant to show you where it comes from and how it is made. Plus I talk about ThrowerDown and what it should mean lol
This video is sponsored by Milorganite in the fact that they paid for my flight and my hotel and food. But really, the pleasure was all mine! I love Spotted Cow.

Little known fact: not only is Kanye West from Oak Lawn, IL, he was a lead setter at TruGreen, Crestwood, IL where I worked. He was a dude who would call through cold lists and ask people "would you like a free 14-point lawn analysis?" and if the person said "yes" that was called a "qualified lead" and those were the ones that I went out and completed and sold. I ran the leads that he and his team generated, this was 1997. I did not work with him at the same tim though, he was gone several months before I started working there, and in fact, it wasn't until 2008 that I discovered we had worked within such proximity back in 1997. Anyway, I still think it's a cool story. Final fact: at one point I tried to get ahold of his employee file to sell on ebay... but our HR lady wouldn't allow it. Ha Ha!

Winner
He is talking sense ,that is not the “Nut “of old , what happened, maybe smelling that newly cooked milo at the plant Allyn?😁
I appreciate your correct grammar.
ColonelK0rn now that’s good bro
Giggle
I’ve been skipping the middle man with these shortages and just taking dumps on my lawn.
Don’t give LCN ideas.🤣😂
Hahahaha!!! Had me laughing hard....
Get a few dogs too they are poop machines.
Yeah, do it at noon time for everybody to see.
Lmfao!
My dad saw the plant in 70s when he got his masters in sanitational engineering from Marquette university... they were brewing the stuff back then... he helped designed the waste water system plants for Atlanta for 30 plus years...
I've used Milo for over 25 years on my lawn and gardens. I rarely feel the need to use anything else and I have a consistently healthy law. Milo feeds my soil. I love seeing this tour of a product I stand by!
Haha. Hurricane coming, everyone is boarding up and preparing; LCN: Gotta get one last mow!
That’s the “Nut” for you.🤣😂
trevor muggeridge true, this guy is awesome. Alan, thanks for the information and entertainment.
Idk if you'll read this, Allyn, but because of you my lawn looks soooooooooo much better than it ever has!
It looks lush and full, beautifully green! Before, it was patchy, weedy, pale. Ugly.
I still have some clover, a few dandelions and some other weeds but I haven't used any weed-killers. Simply by mowing at least 2 x a week the dandelions are rarely seen. Every time I see a yellow flower against that deep green carpet - off with it's head.
Along with frequent mowing, Milo has been applied 3 x since spring.
Five weeks ago I bought a Sun Joe dethatcher. Amazed at how much that little guy pulled out of the lawn! Tried to use a manual dethatching rake and hurt my shoulder. The Sun Joe was easily worth the $100. After all the thatch was cleaned up I Milo-ed and over-seeded.
A long slow sprinkle 1 or 2 x/week mixed with daily shorts for the new seed.
That's it.
Mow. Milo. Water. Dethatch. Overseed.
Next on the list: tackle the weeds. Bet I'll find a tip or 2 in TLCN videos.
Thanks so much, Allyn! I'm actually proud of my lawn. It's the nicest looking one on the street, in this little working-class neighborhood in the Pacific Northwest.
~Enjoy The Mow~
hey karrie ann congrats man, all that hard work paid off I bet.
Think about it. now there is a little bit of Lawn Care Nut in the Milo. We’ve come full circle.
Well done Allyn! Loved the onsite tour of Milo! The success of many! It’s like the OG visits his Holy Grail, and you has a “💩 sniffing” grin during the whole tour!
Life is finding balance, and this will be remembered as the “Milo balance of 2018!”
Ol' Boy was throwin' it down.
Just wanted to say thank you for the information. I much more enjoy watching your videos and others like yours. I would much rather learn something from your videos than waste my time watching the crap on the. What I do with the info is totally up to me. Try it, store it, piece it or forget it. I still appreciate all you guys that help us others. God Bless.👍
The face you made before you took the sniff was hysterical
Alan congrats on getting yourself “inside” a bag of milo. You’re a hardcore endorsee.
Spotted Cow!!! My favorite 🍺
Appreciate all you do for everyone that cares for their own lawns, you're a tremendous source of knowledge and you are respected by me. Very cool tour of Milo plant, as well. keep up the good work, Sir. Greetings from Pensacola!
Good commentary at the end. Thank you for saying that.
Great story Al on the processing of waste into milo and overuse of it . Throw er down.😆👍👍Throw er down ,Throw er down.😁
I had a new home built and moved in November 2017 so this was the first year I had with a lawn that's an average size yard completely sod and I put between 7 and 10 bags of milo down to try and build up a layer of success along with bags of lawn soil to take a poorly graded fill of huge chopped cinderblocks, rocks, and boulders into a smoother yard which seems like I've helped it maybe 10%, but many people say I have the nicest lawn in the neighborhood, multiple people have said that and one guy was stopping and admiring the front lawn while I was walking out the garage he also said that too so it works great, but I wont be satisfied until its without the holes, lumps, and patches.
Have you had a soil test? If not, I'd suggest you get your soil tested. It's very easy to do and worth the minor cost.
Hey Allyn, things are cooling down here in Michigan with some patchy frost forecasted. I threw'er down yesterday for the 3rd time this year and this being the first full year of using Milo. While I'm dealing with major clover and ground ivy issues, I have definitely noticed a thicker and much greener appearance of my lawn over the neighbors. Also started using the N-Ext products ( RGS, Air-8, Microgreene). Threw down some pre emergent yesterday also. Thanks for the videos and all your advice. Can't believe I've lived in Chicago and here in Michigan my entire life of nearly 60 years and never heard of Milo until I came upon your UA-cam videos last year. Thanks again bud. You're awesome.
I don't use Milo but every 4th of July I write Milo on my glorious bag of non waste fertilizer and THROWER DOWN anyways. I do have a very large composting operation but I use that for my vegetable garden.
This video was well worth the anticipation. Great footage of where it all happens. Super interesting info on the product we all love.
My dad used to work for MMSD before they became privatized. He would bring home big clear garbage bags like you find in park garbage cans of Milorganite. I hated those days because it meant I was going to be busy pushing the spreader around the yard all weekend. We sure had a great looking lawn though.
Great vid Allyn, I appreciate you taking the time at the end of the vid to be upfront and honest about our usage of Ferts and how they can effect the environment!! That is super important to push the fact the we all need to be good stewards of the environment and not go crazy all the time with heavy apps that either do not get used by the plant and or being wasted to runoff and leaching. I think this is one of your better vids in a while. I love that you have true passion to help others while teaching responsibility at the same time. Great Job! Chad NY
Smells like success to me! Thanks for another great vid!
Good call on letting people know to calm it down. Too much fert can wash down storm drains and cause serious problems in bodies of water.
I personally do a 1/2 N 2 times in spring, 2 times in fall. Keeps everything super green.
Thanks for all the tips AH.
Thank you Allyn for the Milo plant tour. I always wanted to see the plant and learn more about the product. I’ve been using Milo for 6 years now thanks to you. The product works great!! Best lawn and garden on the block! PS I throw down responsibly 😉😆Cheers🍻
GREAT video. Not only a good look at Milo, but some sensible advice as always on fert usage. Thanks!!
I miss your milorganite days - I still use that stuff for my tall fescue and I love it
I buy compressed pine pellets (horse bedding) and use it for cat litter. After it is used, I sprinkle the sawdust on the LAWN because the material will help with the breakdown of grass clippings and thatch. Just put out a little lime to keep the soil from turning acidic... OK, So I have Trailer Park Milo and no Pink Flamingos.
problem with throwing down heavy becomes a big $$$ picture, esp when you have acres of turf. Application of synthetics becomes the norm, with value in mind
The process is just like the wastewater treatment in our paper mill (primary clarification, aeration, secondary clarification, and sludge removal) except at the end we burn the bugs in our boilers instead of turning them into pellets.
I feel like there is a “Back ‘Er Down!” clip brewing on the horizon. Featuring a ‘responsible’ level of enthusiasm and maybe with the same shirt, just filthy.
I noticed in New York it’s more readily available the closer you get to NYC. Makes sense because most people have concrete backyards in the 5 Boros.I drive 45 miles to stock up on it
Like a winery tour for LCNs
The great thing about living in Wisconsin is that we never worry about any Milo famine. I use it on my lawn, in the garden and in flower pots. I remember when they practically gave it away...I remember paying $2.99 per bag back in "the day".
not any more I would need at least 12 bags for my lawn and the price of that is not something I want to spend. So no Milo here.
Got a random package in the mail yesterday. Opened it up and to my surprise it was that camo Milorganite hat. Damn near felt like Christmas in October!!!
Future bags of Milo will contain a little extra love from the LCN himself. Mmm, cheese curds 🧀
Somehow this brought back memories of “Soylent Green” 🤣 guess this would be Soylent Brown 😂🤣
You were up by me and didn't bother to stop by and fix my lawn? Man that would make for some crazy content lol! Yeah, we have a ton of awesome micro breweries here. Thanks for mentioning pulling back on the "throw down" a bit :) it comes to a point eventually that it can be wasteful.
That was awesome how you just told us the story how you came upon Milo!
What I got from this is "take easy guys. Save some milorganite for the rest of us" Haha. You've created milorganite monsters.
Everybody else "Hurricane coming!" Allyn "Gotta mow"
It Texas, we try to get a mow in before the tornado hits.
I use MILO...It's the best. Maybe throw down some Humic Acid too!
I have one of those Tru Green lawns. The weeds stay away for the most part, but my grass is thin and even when they aerate it isn’t doing the job. I really don’t have time to do my huge yard myself, but at least I am starting to understand why I don’t have a beautiful thick lawn.
Beginner here. Tried some scotts turf builder the first time and wasn't too impressed. Just threw down a heavy dose of Milo, we'll see what happens!
Good one
Ive been using Milo since 1983
Great vid and good explanation on those who are going a bit crazy. 😀
Open up your septic tank. Add water. Put in suction hose. Crank pump. Spray yard. Free fertilizer!!! Seriously saw a yard this year that the owner had to clean out his septic tank. He sprayed his yard and the put down lime to kill the odor. One of the greenest yards around.
That was a really good video. I feel motivated.
This could easily be an episode of This Old House. Fantastic video Al!
I moved from one town in Florida to another. My new yard is all sand. It's going to take a lot of work but next season I will dominate my neighbor's lawn 😃
It was easy for me not to throw down this year since I’m STILL waiting for Milorganite to be available again in my area... thanks Milorganite
It's getting to be too expensive. Used to be $7 bucks a bag 2 years ago. Now I'm paying $15 a bag in Chicagoland. I need 4 bags just for my front yard and 5 bags for the rear. That's like $150 to fert my lawn just once. Way too much
Milo silos....cool
Great video, great advice LCN!!👍👍
I’m trying to get my back yard looking good, but this crazy thing keeps digging it up MR,MOE
I contacted Milorganite about the shortages that have been being experienced at the box stores and they explained that there has been a recent popularity in Milo product I told them it is your fault LCN for getting the word out again! Just kidding love your Channel thank you so much. Anyway they said in about 4 weeks they should have everything under control they having some shipping issues. Anybody's wondering I'm in the south Florida area
I applied 4 applications of Milo per year for 2 years. I did my soil test this past August and I have extremely high phosphorus. Ill cut back to 2 applications next year.
That's why you can't just ONLY throw down Milo, because the 4% phosphorus will build up over time. Keep in mind there's 0 potassium in Milo. Buy yourself some fert that has some potassium(K) in it and zero phosphorus.
Seaweed solution is the best and has very high potassium and other trace minerals and will also help to build the soil!
I have low potassium. I tried Purely Organic Lawn Food fertilizer instead of Milo in September and noticed no growth nor color change.
Lawn Restore by Ringer. Allyn recommends that.
@@johnrosado9245 I know he does. Ringer and Purely organic have the same n-p-k and coverage rate but cheaper. Purely Organic is also made from farming products same as Ringer.
Many memories. My father worked at MMSD for 33 years. Had the milo stacked high in the garage for ever. If i over seed this spring or fall can i throw the milo down with the seed?
nice video allyn hope ur ok and that all is well with you and your family
Great video Allyn. John Perry is really opening our eyes with using less nitrogen and more soil enhancement products such as Humic 12, Microgreene, and RGS.
from Canada. I don't have access to milo unless I cross the border. I have found an organic fert from Home Hardware that works well. It's an 8-2-3 and smells like success. throw down rate is around 5lbs per 1000.
Just an awesome video!!!
I’m glad you finally said it! Now we just need to get all the FB members to watch your this video.
THROW'ER DOWN!!! SPRAY N PRAY BABY!!
Put down my first ever app of milorganite today. Usually buy synthetics from local DIY Lawn and pest control. Excited to see how things turn out. Thanks for the video.
Give it a couple weeks. I was watching closely for days and didn't see much. 2 weeks later lush and green
Really happy to see you address the over application that’s happening with some folks
whats interesting is Milorganite is not really a stand alone product though it is often used as a stand alone. I use a variety of products and I have a lawn care company fertilize my lawn. With that being said I use maybe 1/4 of what the Milorganite bag says and my lawn is a dark healthy green.
Most people want a miracle in a bag and most of the videos on UA-cam misrepresent Milorganite as a miracle cure. People should love their yard enough to research the lawn and realize what works for one lawn may not work for another so they need to be patient and experiement here and there with different things and use milorganite as a secondary fertilizer to get that perfect yard.
Nothing comes easy and lawns are not an exception.
6:31 - Necessary "Dad slap"
Very very cool.
Good luck with the hurricane. Hope it is not that bad there.
You're doing fine. If people don't want to follow your advice, that's their problem.
pretty good video, enjoyed watching it.... feel bad that milorganite is not sell in canada....
im half hour north of milwaukee...do u need it cheep...lol...Hoan bridge looks good. and summerfest is on the other side. my pops turned me on 20 yrs ago to this....magic
My suggestions is always get a soil test 1st. You have to know what's up with the dirt before you go willy nilly out there. Love me some 46-0-0.
The lawn is looking really good, LCN.
Exactly! Break out the science!
Good stuff Allyn!
Very good video Allyn. I would love to tour the Milo factory.
I think I am going to mix in some Ringer next year they are 10-0-6 to complement the Milo 6-4-0.
I was hoping to get another round of milo on my sod. It went in back in July. Milo in Aug, aerated and overseeded in Sept with more milo. Sadly it's all pretty much gone in my area, so it's Menards starter fert before winter gets here. Trying to fight off some rust that started spreading in my lawn. Have it mostly beaten into submission and I am hoping the starter fert is enough kick to finish the fight before winter.
Very good advice
Another great video. Thanks for all the help. I can see what you mean about throwing down less. Over the fert blackout, that was 3 months and my lawn just started to look like it needed some a couple weeks before Oct. I was noticing more ground was showing on my bahia. I threw down Scotts starter fertilizer on that area of my lawn before the blackout and it really lasted a long time. I just carefully watered and mowed and it withstood the summer with no fertilizer at all. I just did spot weed control with Weed B Gone concentrate. Our water has some iron in it of around 4ppm. I wonder if that helps.? Whenever I water, it turns darker green for a while.
My question is when are the young to bring that process to other states like Nebraska or other areas so we can truly take that conservation Nation wide?
I swear you were staring right at me when you said to back 'er down. I probably should start backing down from bag rate x 2 to bag rate and supplement with the N-Ext products... I am particularly interested in trying the Air8. I have a very sloped clay soil lawn that I dare not mechanically aerate because of the old sprinkler system. Some of the pipes and wiring are too close to the surface.
Great video!
I wish that you would have visited the old Milwaukee plant 😢
I wish they would start another plant in different regions of the USA like southeast, west, etc.
That is awesome 😎
My next Milo app with have a piece of Allyn Hane in my lawn
Hey Allyn really love that advice you give I live in Michigan and I know you talked about Halloween domination to throw down Milorganite two weeks prior to Halloween but my question is when my temperatures are only in the high 40s low 50s would like a suggestion on what to put down to make my Halloween domination the best I can be also planning on putting down my last app which will be starter fertilizer with crabgrass and dandelions preventer in November
I had to switch to Ringer for a few applications this year since my Home Depot didn't have any Milo :(
Great video. So from what you are saying about the business structure of milorganite, there sounds to be a massive opportunity to increase sales and push that product. There are many loyal users dating back to the 1980’s but so much of the market seems untapped.
I would love to use MILO but my soil test shows off the charts on phosphorous and I do not even use that in my program so I am at a loss on being able to use it.
Smells like success! Cool Video!
I am in Milwaukee county, trust me, I wish my sewer bill was better subsidized. Wish you would have swung past my house, need some advise on pre-emergent...
No wonder I haven’t been able to find any Milo at Lowe’s in south Texas 😩
I wish we had milorganite here in NZ I would use it on my lawn once a month to six weeks
What up from Griffith great video
Hey LCN, What are your thoughts on throwing down Milo & Epsom Salt mixed together?
The shortage finally hit me. Couldn’t find any Milorganite. They did have Jobes tho. It looked and smelled like Ringer.
I heard there was a shortage of miloganite. I'm from Schererville Indiana and it's sometimes hard to find it. Miloganite needs a need to invest on building a new fertilizer plant to keep up with demand.
Glad to hear you enjoyed your time here in our wonderful city. Let me know if you forgot anything while you were here. Sorry, I can’t ship any Spotted Cow!
