PROTEST! WE PROTEST YOU! First crazy words I heard during my first sailing race many years ago as a newbie. I'm like "protest...wtf?" Then back at the club the Commodore is like 'ok folks those with protests fill out the form and your hearing will be scheduled'. Jesus I thought to myself these people are serious about their racing. Yeesh!!
The J80 needs to establish the overlap before entering the mark zone. (normally 3 boat lengths). At this point the J80 needs to call for room at the mark. From the video it is not clear when the overlap was established. The J80 was overtaking boat. If the J80 established overlap inside the zone then he was not entitled to room.
The overlap entitlement is established with the first boat that 'pierces' the zone..which could be either boat. I think thats what you are saying as well
Nat..you were right as far as i can tell. Rule 18.2b. This is a textbook visualization of why that rule was created. Too bad as a j80 you have to race on the same course. At our club they split them off into a separate course.
@@keithmoorechannel It all depends when the overlap was established. From the video it appears the inside boat established his overlap too late and was not entitled to room at the mark. That is why the leeward boat hailed "no overlap" informing the inside boat he had no room at the mark rights. At this point the inside boat had to keep clear.
Filming boat had overlap. I don't know why outboard boats persist in this charade when they know damn well they've been overlapped. "Oh gee, he said we don't have overlap, he must be right." Just stop it already. I've seen this more times than I can count _just on UA-cam,_ much less racing.
There was no way to tell from this angle they had overlap. Not to mention you can't see the mark to know if they were inside the circle. This video has no proof of overlap.

How was he infront of you to begin with when you're sailing a J80?
He’s in a different division, in a different start, we are actually a lap ahead. We are not even racing against him - just on the same course.
@@NatBaddour in this case you definitely right he is an asshole

as long as they were in the zone.
Yellow boat is the same as mine in the UK. it’s called a trapper 500 over here.. great boats
Rule 18 is always fun..even in light air slo mo!
Leeward boat…. ‘No overlap’….. heads up and hits windward boat…. Windward boat… ‘Well you hit me; I guess I had an overlap.’ QED 😂😂😂

I got protested once and lost! Was so shocked. Def though I was right
Yellow boat - protest or keep quiet.
