Fantastic. He can play all 24 without a scratch or sign of fatigue and then play 12 Liszt Transc etudes as an encore after. This man is not normal. Human, yes, but not normal.

As for those who're saying it's way too fast - "official" metronome speed of op. 10 No. 1 is 176 (for the quarter note). There are 79 bars in the piece at 4/4 = 316 quarter notes. Divide that by the metronome speed and you get to pretty much exactly 1.8 minutes, or 1 minute and 48 seconds "run time" as it should be. He starts playing at 0:03 and finishes at 1:47, that is 1:44 for the piece. So he's effectively 4 seconds faster than metronome speed, which is a margin of less than 4%. Now, you can debate the interpretation, the phrasing and maybe things like that for my personal taste the rubato of the left hand is a little too strong, so strong that some of the left cords almost seem to be a little out of sync. But as for the speed itself, it's pretty much spot on. Not my favorite interpretation of 10/1 and not my favorite piece from Berezovsky for sure. But still a pretty decent interpretation of 10/1 IMO. Tastes always differ.

Berezovsky does not need to demostrate with this piece that he is a virtuoso. Because this Etude doesn't forgive you if you try to go too much beyond, and it punishes even famous international pianists. This Etude deserves respect, it's useless to play it "fast and fuoriously" if you do a couple of bad mistakes like in this execution.

most of all it is useless when the musical quality of this etude is sacrificed when the ambition to be as “fast and furious’’ as can be takes over to impress listeners who are only impressed by the « sportive side” of piano playing.

@@glenngulda Obviously you're offended. But frankly in this instance, I'm not concerned about that. How well do you know this piece? Do you play this piece? if you know it deeply and moreso even play it then you'll understand instantly how very poor this is. I get that pianists hit wrong notes - I've hit enough so I know that BUT you'd also understand that if you are hitting say only 80% of the right notes your efforts at musical expression within the performance are wasted. There is no musical expression to be had if a quarter of all the notes you're hitting are wrong. Also its not single notes it's groups of notes - fistfuls of notes. Also that has then upset his rhythm in parts which is all over the place. When you learn something even difficult on the piano if learnt properly it will still be there for years even if you don't practice it every day but this specific etude is notorious for NOT being like that. Even amongst greats it's often not played unless they've properly brought it up to the technical standards required. Berezovsky clearly thought he'd just throw this in but you can hear in 5 seconds that he's obviously not been playing it for a long time. He is a great pianist and no doubt had he practiced this properly it would have sounded great...but he didn't and it doesn't

@@gspianoguitar4369i cannot believe how arrogant and also wrong your opinion is.. i know this piece from all the great pianists, that recorded it, because i always listen to alot of performances of pieces that i lean..and i play this piece since 15 years and know every single note in it. i did two master degrees in piano and i since 25 years i do nothing more, than analyse interpretations and performances of all pianists..the old masters and the pianists of nowadays..its my life…
and this performance is amazing.. its brutal, its the russian way of interpretation but exactly this way has its own beauty and passion. the few (and not so many as you say for a live performance) wrong notes are nothing to focus on. boris is not in need to do a competition performance. and its not a recording, in which he can cut or play as long as it gets completely right. its a live performance and its absolutely masterful. you have no idea how difficult this etude is because you wouldn’t complain about those few wrong notes, if you would. stay respectful against pianists, that are far better than you will ever be.

@@glenngulda Mmm.. I rarely go this deep into a discussion online but you are a supreme example of the type of person that needs this so I will - you - the internet proffessor who knows everything about the matter in hand . . . not.
Right you're probably a 17 fan boi of Boris Berezovzky who generally winds up the world backed up by a google search or two.
Your "life" is, after two masters degrees, after sleeping eating drinking analysing the piano for every second of every day, playing this piece since you were 15, spent being a (hushed tones) 'piano master'. ......
Well, you're not. For all your 'qualifications', which are dubious, you are looking like a complete fool. You've obviously never played this piece or studied it at any length. If you had you would know the iconic specific difficulties of the piece that has made some of the greatest performers in history never play it publicly. There are few very difficult pieces that demand the same technical requirements as this, the opening and closing of the hand whilst turning over the wrist on the way up and timing the arm and torso behind it results in a study that demands complex multilayered different movements at great speed. Moreso than almost any other study known. So much so that Horowitz Rubinstein and others when asked why they never played it in public all said it was for the practice room never for the stage and admitted they could never conquer the piece.
Of the thousands of others that have tried in public the number of 'perfect' performances are very few especially live
Off the top of my head that is Ashkenazy, Seong-Jin Cho, Argerich and a couple more.
This performance is not amazing and far from "masterful" and the variations in disconnected rhythms, bucketfuls of wrong notes, hesitations etc only help it to be NOT amazing. He obviously can play it and there are other performances of this piece on youtube by him but this is terrible. There are not a "few wrong notes" there are bucketfuls of them.
Advice - When you are going to put yourself 'on the line' in supporting something very strongly you should get your facts straight before you start spouting of as a guru. You are obviously not.
