Shicoff was a great singer and actor in the post-Pavarotti era. Arguably the best Hoffmann ever. Fantastic as Roméo, Eléazar, Lensky, and Edgardo. Loved Chernov. I had the honor of studying with him for a while. A wonderful man with an incredible intellect and what a voice.
I compared his carmen with Domingo's 1970's singing, Neil is way above. So many gorgeous arias. So underappreciated, I heard of his training with Corelli actually did not really help him since the voices are different...
This is done so naturally, unlike others, much too heavy. Neil's voice is still so young, fresh colorful, like fresh minted crystal...how lucky to hear this... Thank You so much.
Thanks maestro Edmund, this duet makes us all heavy voices, that it is possible to sing this repertoire, retaining still charm and great vocal color!!!Both singers and the musical conduction are superb!!!...thanks again!!!
WOW ! To me, it was more powerful and beautiful than the Bjorling and Merrill duet. I had never heard of Neil Shicoff before. He and Chernov blended very well together.
***** Shicoff sings well and has a beautiful voice. But the outstanding thing about him is that fresh sound and innate ability to be intimate with the audience. I think he is an outstanding consummate artist .
I have never seen Neil live or on video. If he can act half as good as he sings, he is in my opinion one of the top ten operatic performers of all time.
I’ve only ever seen him as Lensky from “Eugene Onegin” and he is a FANTASTIC actor. One of the very best opera singers/actors of the last 100 years, seriously. He is something so special and doesn’t get nearly the credit he deserves.
@SHICOFF1 looks like he acts 100% focus, hard to imagine at that level, singing plus acting, so demanding. He did so well from the video, Bravo! Seems he respects his work and audience.
@SHICOFF1 I have not listened to his Lucia's arias... must be a good thing, from Carmen and Romeo, I have a glimpse of his pure ringing bell tone, higher the better, all the same quality throughout, very naturally
This truly beautiful aria, Au fond du temple saint, is done to perfection by these two great artists - Neil Shicoff and Vladimir Chernov. It's featured on the Orfeo CD - Neil Shicoff Live. My local classical radio station in Philadelphia plays it occasionally.
***** Yes, Steve, I am extremely grateful to Edmund St. Austell for this and the many other fine arias he's posted. Hearing this one again, made my day! Wish I had heard it with Bryn Terfel. I love this aria.
***** Steve, WRTI, Temple University Public Radio, in Philadelphia, plays a half hour - mostly of operatic arias - just before the 1 p.m. Saturday opera broadcasts (currently Live from the Met.) A popular At Your Request program is open for listener requests each Wednesday and airs from 12 to 3 p.m. Suggest such a program to WFMT. It's a great way to hear more of your favorites. I requested this great Shicoff/Chernov aria on 7/25/12, having heard it first on 7/21/12 before an LA Opera production of Romeo et Juliette.
Gracias Steve, tou are always sharing and helping us to keep this wonderful interaction with this divine code od lyrical music. Muchas gracias to both, Edmund and you!!!
Unfortunately, Vladimir Chernov, completely blew his voice out trying to sing the Doge in Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra", the role was too much for him. I was in the chorus & observed it 1st hand!
@@gaitpiano not true. He did have some health issues at the end of 199x, but he's alive and actually is a professor at UCLA schoolofmusic.ucla.edu/people/vladimir-chernov/

Шикарное исполнение!! Мой любимый Нил Шикофф мой любимый тенор!! Браво обоим исполнителям!!!.
I had the good fortune to be at a performance of Tosca with Neil Shicoff. He was amazing.
Thank you for the post. A piece of heaven to end my evening.

@SHICOFF1 And his voice did not change or deterioate much, seem very lucky and consistent,
One of the loveliest arias for males voices, and this rendition ... I am overwhelmed. Thank you!
прекраснейший дуэт
Absolutely beautiful! My eyes are filled with tears, and that's okay.
I keep coming back to this to listen--again, and again. Shicoff's voice gives me chills. How magnificent!
Great recording. Thank you for its being on UA-cam.
I have discovered Schicoff's great voice just recently and would like to hear more!
Wonderful! The best recording I have ever heard!

Thanks, John. Great comment. Much appreciated!
Thanks to you again dear maestro.Saludos

I used to tune in Jussi and Robert Milles' version, but this is just as precious, ringing squillo of Neil, grand masterful. Thank you for posting!

@SHICOFF1 he does look like someone graduated with Ph.D in drama at Yale... looks like he worked hard.
@SHICOFF1 thank you so much, will find it out,

the great American tenor Neil Shicoff and the great Russian baritone Vladimir Chernov

Stunning singing! One of the best versions ever! Bravissimi! Thanks Edmund for posting.
A pleasure, Yana. Thanks for the comment!
Wonderful singing!!!
Schicoff is a really great tenor and a great colleague offstage (if a bit neurotic). He's also a great prankster!
His name is spelled “Shicoff” not Schicoff.
@pryan5183 Thank you for the correction (9 years later), very kind of you.
@@robertmanno5749 I just came across this… wanted to note for others who might discover this clip for the first time.
BRAVI!
Καταπληκτικό, υπέροχο !!!
Σας ευχαριστώ πολύ, φίλε μου! Εκτιμώ το σχόλιο!
BELLO DUO
Schicoff 1 has "No Content".

Bien, mais j'ai préféré l'enregistrement bjoerling warren. De surcroît plus équilibré .
Love Shicoff, not so much a fan of Chernov

sachseco i was told that he , in fact, had an illness which obliged him to stop. nothing like trying to hard......
he , infact had a problem in one of his ears, and develop cancer and died quiet quickly of it !
@sachseco He did it very well, at least how it sounds here:
