I wish someone had done videos like this when I was a new fishkeeper (of course, the internet would've had to be around then, but still). It would've saved me a LOT of work and heartache. Keep up the great work, John & Lisa!
testing the water parameters regular will give you a good maintenance schedule. I’ve cut back my feeding to once a day as it was creating more maintenance. Great information for the hobby
I feed only once. Although sometimes I'll feed heavy, then feed them good that'll clean out their system.. then doba water change. Really depends on the mood and day.
I have now 4 fish tanks. Funny, I got a sad looking male betta and got a 3 gallon tank. Then, I started looking for how to keep him happy and stumbled upon your channel. Well, I moved him to a 5 gallon and got 2 albino Cory's. Went back to store and got 7 neon tetras. Another video, and got a 10 gallon. Kept watching your channel and was learning a lot. Then, I fell in love with the Rummynose Tetra. Now I have a 29 gallon tank community tank with 25 fishes, plants, etc. Got from you a 55 filter and noticed it was not running properly. I put it in a HD bucket to check it out and clean it. I clean the tank, gravel, sponge filter, changed 50% of water and when I look for the filter....poof gone. My mom thought it was garbage and it was pick up garbage day, and my filter went with the truck. Can't be upset with her as she's 81 years old. So, I have 2 filters in it, and I have to get one that can handle the load. I do at least 2 water changes a week because it know the filters can't keep it with the load. But I love all my tanks and the fish I have in them. This hobby its beautiful but however gets in to this, needs to know its a big responsibility and a big commitment to keep them healthy and happy.
I agree with you in everything!! But there is one thing that really helps to keep the aquarium healthy even if it’s overstocked…plants. Specially root plants like anubias or mixed plants like bamboo that grows roots in the water and the foliage is out of the water. They have a natural fertilizer, wasted food and fish 💩, and make your air cleaner!!
I think also that new people should stay away from the eco complete type gravel that you see in those aquascapes. It’s just going to be an algea farm since newer people will always have the light on full blast with not that many plants.
@@jedeo299 Agreed. That's why I gave two examples of plants that don't need much to thrive... they can go bare bottom, with no or little amounts of light
@@jedeo299 lol I became obsess ediver which substrate would produce the most germs and ended up buying that for my first tank. Luckily it was only 1 bag for a 29 gallon long.

Live plants, Once a day feeding usually (or 4 times small feedings due to fry), snails, shrimps, less than 10 guppy fish (plus few fries), weekly or bi-weekly 20% water changes (plus maintenance) = 10 gallon healthy aquarium without any testing since 6 months (but it took almost a year before this to learn this and used to do weekly testing in that 1 yr period but not anymore) NOTE: Videos as this and many more helped to learn and still learning...thank you for making such videos !!!
I here 😎😎😎😎and thank you John. An gentle overall video like this is paramount for new fish keepers as not to completely overwhelm them with very in-depth scientific analysis of GH,KH, pH,etc...whew. the animated fishies should definitely have everyone at ease. They be adorable 😀😎
Just got a new phone and this is the first UA-cam video I watched after setting it up. So cool... vibrant colors! Thanks John! My two tanks are running smoothly because of you, Lisa and Corey.
I think floating plant is like the best option if you want to make your water clean it's the organic way and very easy to do, just put them there and take some of them out when they cover all the surface, They eat all the excess ammonia and fish really love to have them.
Excellent video for new fishkeepers. We ( Wendy and I ) are FF deep substrate method and very heavy planted tanks. We have reached the 300g of tanks in 7 tanks. Different styles and water parameters for each. Understanding water testing temp water flow/ airaition is critical in maintaining quality beautiful healthy biospheres. May both of you have a very merry Christmas. Looking forward to seeing new videos and streaming next year.
It’s been a month since I did a water change on my 75 gallon yellow lab tank. All the water is checking perfect still so I just added five gallons. I’ve got two 60 gallon whisper filters and 9 young yellow labs I think the load is just so light because they are young. I really appreciate your videos. I’m sure I’ll have to work a lot harder as they mature and breed.
Great advice as always. Returning to the hobby after a few years and thought long and hard before getting the tank and spending the money. Now I looking to these videos for advice and how to handle the new tank setup/cleaning/issues. After some losses, I am going to take new path. I have 2 fish that survived and a bunch that didn't. Very sad but that is part of fishkeeping, I did not set out to watch fish die. I am planning the path of "What do these conditions do the survivors like and get fish that thrive" vs "Let me spends months changing the tanks natural balance".
I have drift wood, a battle ship, and a moon cave. I have two Oto catfish with five cherry ventilated barbs but I’m using a tidal 35 but in the winter time I use pink foam around my tank because it sits near a window and campers just are not insulated well.
I agree with you on everything except that Lisa couldn't have done this, lol. She's smart, fun and captivating. Plus, she tells a great story! More Lisa, please! #TeamLisa
I feed my fish once a day and spend about 1 to 2 hours a week cleaning and changing water. This is part of the fun having an aquarium. I don't test all the time as you can tell if you issues just by observing the fish regularly.
Aquarium changes as well. I have heavy planted, low bioload, good filter, so I can probably change water once in two months. However when I just started aquarium, I was was changing water twice a week at least. Now I still trim my plants and change water one every two weeks just for fun.
As a standard rule I always use a filter meant for twice the size of the tank. Not necessarily to purposefully over stock or to enable neglecting the filter maintenance or water changes but rather to guarantee if I need to put a few more fish in temporarily ill be safe and if something comes up and I must delay maintenance for a day or two because I cannot be home Ill be safe. I also always use a pre-filter sponge on the intake even when there is nothing small enough to need it. The sponge will need cleaning weekly but it makes the main filter take much longer to need cleaning, also increases surface area fir beneficial bacteria increasing filter efficiency. Makes it safe for surprise fry as well. Also cleaning a used sponge by the intake of a new un-cycled tank that has had fish in for a day or two (so there is ammonia for the bacteria to eat) can almost instantly cycle the tank, I've successfully done that many times and the fresh live bacteria from a running tank far exceeds using anything from a bottle in effectiveness.
Love this-so helpful!! My next question is: I see videos and it seems like most people buy a filter then take it apart and add stuff to it- If you buy a filter meant for 2x the size of your tank, what goes it the filters to keep it the cleanest? Is there a certain order in which you add the stuff to the filter? Also see videos where they have just one sponge in the bottom of the tank. What's the difference? If that one sponge does everything why would people go to all the trouble of adding all that stuff to a hang on the back filter?
Thank you guys for all the helpful information. Absolutely my go-to fish care channel, been a fan for years. Also thanks for influincing me to get 3 Bichirs 😂 I love them, espcially my albino.

Quick question: I just took down my one year old 5 gallon betta tank and transferred everything to a new Fluval Flex 9 gallon. Same CaribSea gravel and same live plants. It was a fairly balanced tank. I have three other Fluval Flex tanks and I usually use the filter from one of the others when I start a new tank. But I decided to start with new filter on this one. By using the same gravel and plants, do you think I can avoid the big cycle to start with? I know nothing's an absolute but I'm curious if this works. The betta is in another tank and very happy so no real plans to add fish yet.

I’m building a 10 gallon tank and I want to plant some micranthemum Monte Carlo and guppy grass or hornwort, I’m planing on stocking the tank with 6 guppies and 4 neocaridina shrimps I’ll use black San as a substrate so I was wondering it’s a good idea to plant that Monte Carlo? The API test kit is worthless for testing nitrates here on Long Island, NY. We have high nitrates in our tap water which comes from the underground aquifer. The aquifer is stocked with nitrates by lawn fertilizers, cesspools and people who don't pick up after their dogs. Take a look at the API Test Kit nitrate chart. Can you tell the difference between 10 and 20 PPM? How about 40 and 80?
Newbie question: If you discover a few sick fish in your community tank & you quarantine the sick ones, should you replace the filter or whole filter unit to the tank that you removed the sick fish from?
So my set ups are a 55 with 2 blood parrots and a pleco (he's to small for the 300 at the moment) fed once a day I test every week but I always do water changes once a week I've a 300 with two oscars again water changes once a week and it keeps everything down works for me and my fish seem healthy
assuming you mean having nitrates right after cycling and you haven't added fish yet, you'll have nitrates left over from the cycling process anyways, you just need to do a big water change before adding fish and you'll probably be good.

Thanks for another amazing video. Really helpful. Could you do a video on feeding bettas? (With frozen, live, flake, tablets, pellets etc.) Like the comment if you agree.
I have a 120, and a 150. They are connected to a common sump. One cleaning/water change per month. Don't overstock them and keep live plants, i never see any Nitrates.
I just can't get my Nitrates under control always in the 60-80 zone. 75g , not even close to overstocked. Regular water changes(15 to 20g a week what comes out of the tap is low-20)-Nitrates won't budge. Feeding every other day 1x-Nitrates won't budge. Added live plants-Nitrates won't budge. Nitrite? 0. Ammonia? .25. I would do bigger water changes but I don't trust the water the comes out of the tap where I live.
A lot of problems stem from overfeeding. It creates a chain of reactions of problems. Fish will always beg for food. Most of these fish can go 1 week without food. A daily feeding skipping day every 3rd day is perfect. You'll see way less gunk in the tank and the water stays clear.
The better way to phrase it is not to overfeed the tank. Most fish , unlike humans , will stop eating when they are full. Excess food simply goes to waste.
@@user-mo4wt9gk9y depends on how you stock in my opinion. My set up in my 5 gallon is a betta, 2 nerite snails and about 5-6 ghost shrimp. The bio load isn’t crazy so I can see why my parameters stay rather stable, no ammonia or nitrite I just keep my nitrate at around 10. Plus it’s planted so that helps too

The better way to phrase it is not to overfeed the tank. Most fish , unlike humans , will stop eating when they are full. Excess food simply goes to waste.
What is your Bichir eating?
Looks like cut up talipia
Fish are like people 🤣 more people the more poop 😅
Feed once A day when I get up
1st
First
I guess people ( sometimes myself ) consider being first an accomplishment. Honestly idk why
cycle cycle cycle cycle cycle cycle cycle cycle cycle....
yes and BEFORE you buy the fish- Also, the small tanks are harder to keep the parameters stable- Much easier to keep a 10 gallon than a 5 gallon.
Plus it’s planted so that helps too
good morning!
