Thanks for watching!
One of the most beautiful chord progressions of all time. And Rawlings' accompaniment is just something else. Thanks for breaking it down Eric.
Phenomenal lesson with the tab - thanks so much Eric - almost there and learning loads.! With my lack of music theory, "Slidiness", "Twinkly bits" and "triangles" are musical concepts I can really work with! Awesome.
I remember when asked about what scales he likes to use in an interview Dave said: ".....I dunno....there's like a D area, and then an Am area.....I guess..."
This is so hugely complex I am amazed someone could figure it out like this. Awesome! Beautiful song.
Dave's floating, haunting style makes sense to me - I can't figure out everything he does, but I can get like 60% and that's plenty for me!
@@EricHaugenGuitar 60% is about 59% more than I would have figured out without this video! I just discovered David Rawlings recently, which is what lead me to searching and finding this guitar video. From listening to it I had no idea how he does it. Now this video and your tab for the video is showing that it isn't that hugely hard to play. It's the way he puts notes together is magical. I am sure there is some logic to it but I am still working on trying to understand that. If you want a suggestion for a follow up video it could be more about the theory behind what he does. What is the scale and whether he changes the scale as the cords change, and the use of seconds (realize my music theory knowledge is.. er, intermediate, so I am having some trouble following). You touch on the theory in your Revelator Solo 1 video but it could easily be a whole video with hints about how he creates his magic.
Wow, the solo for Everything is Free is really beautiful. Nicely done to figure that out!
I love how Dave uses open notes it gives it such a beaty
Beautifully played, and taught. There is something recognizable about Rawlings' phrasing and timing that just elevates everything he touches. I can't describe it, but I know it when I hear it.
Thanks for this! I will be spending some fun hours on it.
This is beyond my current and probably future capabilities, but you played it absolutely beautifully. I loved it!
When I close my eyes I hear David and Gillian................Spectacular playing my friend....Guitar nails his tone...love it
+Mike Veeman Thanks so much, Mike! If I could only be 1/64th the musician David is, I'd be a happy man!
so expressive and beautiful dynamics
Treating myself tonight to listening to all of your David Rawlings vids (again.) Great job bro, really! Great ear, great playing, and great tones, but I have to say you really capture the essence of his playing. That's most impressive to me.
All the best to you Eric!
Thanks so much Izzy!
Dave's one of the players who I share some kind of elemental connection to. Maybe it's the Neil Young thing, or a bit of Johnny Marr, or the ragged-ness. But there's something in Dave's playing that makes sense to me.
BTW - I'm working on "Scarlet Town" right now - stay tuned for that one!
Man this is beautifully played. Please do more acoustic stuff!
Thanks Conor - will do!
Beautiful guitar solo! Thank you Eric.
It's my pleasure, Maneli! Dave Rawlings has such an open, contemplative style to his playing - so cool to try and understand. It complements Gillian's voice and playing perfectly!
Beautiful articulation!
Lovely guitar work thank you Eric!
Thanks so much John!
I actually visiting Nashville later this week, who knows, maybe I’ll spot Gillie and Dave while I’m there!
Outstanding.
Just bought your tabs for this song, thank you for the awesome job!
Thanks for your support!
I'm eternally fascinated by Gillie and Dave - I can't wait to hear what they do next!
Great! Thank You, Eric!
It's my pleasure, Charlie!
Beautiful job Eric
Thanks so much, Matthew!
Beautiful playing
Thanks so much!
So lovely mate, thanks!
It's my pleasure, Martin! I'm glad you liked it!
Thank you! love it!
It's my pleasure! Glad you like it!
Very nice Eric. Dave Rawlings is the man!
He sure is! I'm really into working out his stuff - it's really changed how I think about acoustic guitar.
Awesome, just bought the tab and going to start learning. Quick question - where on the tabs does it switch from the first solo to the second solo?
Wonderful thanks
It's my pleasure, man!
Thanks for watching!
Nice! And thanks!
It's my pleasure Paul!
I'm always fascinated by the works of Gillie and Dave - the two of them continue to create some of the best folk music around.
everything is free! (except for the tab)
See if you can transcribe it for $3. 🤣
Thanks
Thanks so much Benjamin!
I think I am beginning to understand Rawlings - such feeling, note selection, and the melodies seem to turn on a dime. Nice playing!
I think you've summed it up nicely there!
Feeling, note selection, and unpredictability :-D
Nice, thank you for introducing me to his music (their music). My favorite right now is short-haired woman blues. ; )
Yea his note choices are really unique.
Love your channel. Your teaching is top shelf. Thanks for breaking down all the Gillian & David stuff. Any chance you've done their cover of Radiohead's 'Black Star' ? Please keep up the great work! ~ Timmo
Oooh good idea!
Me and my wife have been listening to that ep a lot lately!
I love how out there Dave's solo on that tune is - one of his freakiest :-)
I second that! It would be awesome to here the Black Star cover, your lessons are the best I've ever seen and my favorite on UA-cam 👍thank you!
oh my gosh, thank you so much for posting these. i've been playing these songs for years without the lead, this helps so much! Would you please do One Morning? I have been trying to figure that one out since Hell Among The Yearlings came out!
Ooooh yeah I love that one too! It's almost like the melody doesn't match the chords and yet it all works beautifully!
Oh yeah it's on my list! My wife loves that one too.
awesome!
Would you ever consider recording a video of just the lead guitar only? Without the rhythm in the background?
This is beautiful! I just bought the sheet music.
Do the backtrack and solo start at the same time in the beginning of the song? It seems like it does in the video, but in the sheet music, it seems like the solo comes in after a few measures? Struggling with the timing.
Hi Hannah!
That IS weird timing with the intro - I just listened again and it sounds like there's a ghost count in that's sorta audible, but the real count in is much louder.
If you drop in with the pickup notes on beat 3 of the real count in, that'll line up perfect!
"Clunk Clunk - Rawlings lick " - that's my recommendation :-)
@@EricHaugenGuitar SO helpful! Thank you so much!! :)
Very Nice, what Goya is that? Sounds great!
Thanks Dave! That's a 1962 Goya S-14. I love that guitar! I picked it up back in 2003 at a local shop for $275 - you can still find 'em for pretty cheap.
Please do the cover by Courtney Barnet. She does it with one guitar. Really cool.
I want to learn to play this style Eric so bad...Where do you recomend I start...Been playing 30 years but not so good at theory...any advive...you play his stuff very very well
I'm putting a video together with an overview of his style but until then, here's some things to think about:
1. crosspick/arpeggiate more - he almost never just strums a chord
2. Capo freely - he'll always find a place to put the capo to key himself in G
3. use open strings - even when they sound sorta "wrong"
Thanks so much.... cant wait to get my 35 martin r 17 and sit down and focus on your videos... awesome
The reason Gill's so great at holding down the rhythm is because Oprah Von Sofa played bass under a pseudonym.
ugh this song is gorgeous, but really hard to learn when this video doesn't really tech it very well, needs to be slowed down and taken step by step
Please do Dry Town.
Ooooh good idea! I'll add it to my list!
Thank you.
Is Pilgrim (You Can't go Home) on the list?
It is now! :-D
Everything is free now,
That's what they say.
Everything I ever done,
Gotta give it away.
Someone hit the big score.
They figured it out,
That we're gonna do it anyway,
Even if doesn't pay.
I can get a tip jar,
Gas up the car,
And try to make a little change
Down at the bar.
Or I can get a straight job,
I've done it before.
I never minded working hard,
It's who I'm working
Buetiful mate
