Remember watching this live and couldn’t believe that Oliver wasn’t awarded the two points at the end...
Oliver won at the end. Had control of both feet. Dude was sitting on his butt. No doubt it was a TD.
That was a SPECIFIC point of emphasis that year at the coaches meetings. You had to clear your head and it was THAT exact situation. Look at John Smith's reaction. He's not going nuts because...he knows that's EXACTLY what they talked about.
It looks so obvious now, but...they were very clear at that time, that was not going to be awarded a TD until you got your head out.
@@andressandoval9043 oh you mean like Sasso vs O'Connor ???? Olive'rs head was stuffed.
there was a TD that was not awarded to Logan as well in the match....went both ways. this is just the topic b/c it came at the end.
@@qghjuy that was not a take down JO clearly took Steiber down at the end
Assuming this match is the reason that they use replays now
100 times out of 100 today, Oliver wins. It's not even a close call. He had the takedown for a full five seconds at the end. I can't think of a worse non-call.
@@zombiefireman It was without a doubt the right call. Refs made a very specific, deliberate point to let us know that year at the coaches meeting that in THAT exact situation, in on a shot, below the knees, that was not a TD. It was a point of emphasis that year.
Now...that's a TD. 2012, not a TD. John Smith hasn't argued, he knows it. Oliver may have, but he also knew the rules.
@@zombiefireman I know your comment is old, but with replay Steiber gets the takedown late in the first also so the end result is the same. Oliver had a hand down with Steiber wrapped from behind at the end of the first, no reaction time needed for rear standing takedown.
@@scourge8097 you said the refs made a point to "us" at the coaches meeting... are/were you an ncaa wrestling coach? Your comment is very good insight into this call that I never knew.
@@darron614 Yes. I DO get why people are upset about the call...but to it was just made about as clear as it could have possibly been.
Brutal way to lose that one.
Yep Ref’s blew this one
Probably one of the reasons for replays now
This can’t be allowed to happen at this level
Any level really because we know how hard these guys train
I would agree that it was 2. But it’s also Oliver’s fault for not climbing up the body when he had a good 5 seconds to do so, you can’t sit on the ankles and just hope for the ref to call it, you gotta make it clear to them
@@hunterc843 you can’t blame JO for not being able to climb up steiber’s body.. I’m sure he would’ve if he could’ve. Steiber had his arms around Oliver’s body preventing it but either way, the refs should’ve called it a 2, plain and simple.
@@thekeebman I agree on the ref part, and maybe you’re right maybe JO couldn’t climb up the body, but to me it looked like he assumed he had 2 and stopped, I agree it’s a bad call but he’s gotta try to fight there to make it obvious that he has 2 instead of hoping the ref will call it
Though it's a toss a brick, I agree with the ref on this exceptionally important call -- biggest of the tournament imo:
Steiber had JO wrapped up tight, with more time a stalemate. Typically to score a takedown, you get control first, then whatever happens. This wasn't a two stepper -- JO shot INTO a stalemate, i.e., when did he ever have control?
@@michaelmaloskyjr "JO shot into a stalemate." Stalemate? You clearly don't have a clue what you're talking about. If this happens today with video review this is a takedown 100 percent of the time. No question. When you are sitting on your ass with both legs extended and covered (JO had both legs in his arms there) then it is a takedown. He didn't even need to cover them, he just needed a touch on both. But he had both legs for five seconds! Stieber could "wrap up tight" all he wanted, it's irrelevant. It was a takedown and Oliver won. Period.
A truly great match between two 3x NCAA champions.
what
@@kieranmcguire5470He’s saying Logan should have 3 titles bc he really lost this match. A lot of people think Oliver was screwed. Understably.
Oliver is my PA boy and I always pull for him but damn I hate those matches he loses because he sits back and waits. U come out and take him down in thirty seconds then the next period n a half u are fighting off good shots so u can’t work your own phenomenal offense. Then he always gets offensive late in those loses but too little too late. If he just goes out and opens up and implements his game he s the best in the world
The fact that Oliver got in the deep twice with like 20 seconds left was insane he’s clutch but ran out of time waiting. He shoulda worked up the slightest at the end he had it.
he had the points as soon as he pulled the ankle and put logan on his ass. this match should have gone to oliver and everyone who watched knew this.
But didn’t Oliver have his hand down on the May the last 30 seconds of the 1st and Steiber had his hand(s) above the hips? Isn’t that a take down?
huh?
I can see where I should’ve made the edit. But stiebers hands were above the hips and he didn’t get the “2 call” but everyone thinks Oliver should’ve. I can most definitely see where it can be seen as a take down. But he just laid there. He didn’t climb the hips. He didn’t continue any type of progress with his supposed “take down”. I’m not sure but don’t you have to show control and not show you’re hanging on for dear life? I’m not an expert or ref. And hell I wrestled for 12 years and still need to be told wtf is going on here.
@@tropicalterrarium1742 made the correction(s) for ya.
Yes it should have been a takedown. No reaction time needed for a rear standing takedown.
Can you upload the 1997 275 lb Finals? Stephen Neal tech'd Trent Hynek.
You're thinking of 1998. Neal lost in the finals...I think to Kerry McCoy in '97.
Freak. Just a Golden Era of HWTs. Everyone remembers Brock and I guess then Konrad, but Neal and Angle, McCoy, Tolly Thompson, Walter from Wisconsin. Lots of studs...but Neal was as impressive as any of them(maybe not more impressive than McCoy).
Both wrestled a great match, but do you think Oliver should of had 2?
Hell yeah I do
Definitely had 2
2 for sure.
*should have not should of
JO should have had two
Can you upload the 2013 133 ibs match?
Hi @Xenonmaster666! Thanks for the request. We just published that Logan Stieber vs. Tony Ramos match here: ua-cam.com/video/67kRfQqD9sY/v-deo.html
Can you please upload the 2015 Ncaa 197 lb final
Hi @StFidjnr! Thanks for the request. We just published that Kyven Gadson vs. Kyle Snyder here: ua-cam.com/video/zLMhnSQd4wY/v-deo.html
Wasnt that interlocking after Stieber's first takedown?
Okie State learned how Michigan felt after the Churella-Hendricks final.
I'm glad Mark Perry stopped him from being a three timer. It's almost as if the refs were being paid and that's not a hyperbole.
Good match
How did both of these ref’s miss this????
I like Logan, but he did not win this match because he did get taken down at the end
Side ref actually called 2.
@@andizzyJD12 Logan had a 2 earlier that wasn't called and should have been. Should have been 6-3 at that point.
@@chethammer exactly Logan had a rear standing with Oliver's one hand on the mat late in the first period. There's no reaction time needed for rear standing takedown.
one of the reasons they have replays now but still didnt help joey mckenna against yani
My favorite match of all time!
Thank you, didn’t see it so I’ll watch it again
Who's here comparing the calls to Sammy Sasso vs Austin O'connor
I’m a PSU fan and I think both of the calls should be 2 haha. But that’s also because I knew Jordan and still know Sammy.
Ya they both got screwed and I believe they were both the better wrestlers at the time.
Logan should of gotten that takedown at 3:30
Any of these guys vs the competition now... what would happen?
Oliver would win I think Logan's been retired for a while
Oliver wouldnt be a 2x ncaa champion he had weak competition in college logan would have multiple titles maybe just not 4
i can’t believe this
So after a few pints Stieber openly admits he is only a 3 Time champ?
2 time really, Tony Ramos had him pinned and got at least 2 backs.
@@douglassmith887 Crap, I totally forgot about that match! Hagerty missed that call. And Mike Hagerty was my wrestling coach at CMSU! Wouldn't call it a pin, but he definitely should have got nearfall ponts. Not sure that changed the final result though.
@@zombiefireman As Mike if that was 2 on the TD then. He should remember the coaches meeting. I've said this like 9 times in these comments, but that was a point of emphasis that year. That was NOT a TD. You had to clear your head, get your head out.
@@scourge8097 bro, you can say it nine more times if you like. Say it 100 times. It's still a taketown all day long.
@@zombiefireman Sure...in 2022.
But it wasn't in 2012. What do they say about the law? Ignorance of the law is not a defense?
Well, ignorance of the rules is not a defense. That's PARTICULARLY true when this was a point of emphasis and they literally took the time out to tell us that this EXACT situation, below the knees, on the ankles, head inside=no TD.
John knows it wasn't a TD, JO knows it wasn't a TD. Every coach there knew it wasn't a TD...and if you were participating in the D1s in '12 as a coach or a Wrestler, you'd know that.
But instead, you're participating in the YT comments section without a clue 10 years later.
You might have noticed, what is a TD and what isn't has changed. Once upon a time you needed control for a TD. Now, you need to be in on a single and simply put your hand on the other leg. Not even all the way behind. Just...reach it. That's not a TD IMO, but that's technically a TD.
This should have been a TD in my opinion, but it technically was NOT. And if they hadn't made SUCH a point of it, I'd be screaming right next to JO. But Stieber knew the rules. That's why he's a 4Xer and Oliver is a 2X champ.
Missed takedown at the end but steiber was a hair away from a takedown in the first period so it's kind of a wash
3:35 if Oliver’s first slide by was two because he was behind on the feet and his hand touched then honestly Steiber is behind there not with the claw like Oliver had but around the legs and waist area and Oliver’s hand touches coulda been two. Oliver wrestled through it very well to avoid the quick call but without the knees hitting and just hand touching for both it really could be two then.
Classy
Rules changed? You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about!
2
The only match that was more poorly officiated was the Hendricks vs Churella match.
Jordan Oliver was robbed of being in the prestigious 3-timer club. It seems like even Logan feels he should have lost this match. During the interview Logan's mannerisms don't scream "I just won an NCAA title as a freshman." Nothing against Logan though, just poor officiating.
Oliver won that match plain and simple.
Ref was too concerned with himself and yelling stupid shit and missed a huge call. Super irritating when the refs interject themselves into matches and say things the entire time. Like. If you wouldn't do it when you're not on TV then don't do it when you're on TV. I feel like refs often get caught up in the size of the event more than the athlete's do. "KEEP WRESTLING GUYS!" Good thing you're there, ref, I think they'd have probably just stopped wrestling and went back into the stands to eat pretzels if you hadn't have screamed that so many times. "Outta bounds were neutral!" I bet they'd have both just layed on their backs if he wasn't there to remind them the restart.
Hahaha! It's true. The same can be said for coaches that incessantly bark "keep wrestling." I don't know what these athletes would do without those crucial instructions.
If it was 2 the ref would of called it. End of story oliver oost get over it
Absolutely robbed.
I laugh a bit when the Announcers call these guys “freshman”. Most of them would be true sophomores or probably juniors if they didn’t get held back in elementary or grade school and then red shirt their true first year of College.
I under that this is not true for everyone, but it is for a very high %.
Like daton fix who wasn’t a freshman until he was like 21 years old lol. He’s got to be pushing 25 by now.
@@johnfraleee The parents are really to blame here. It’s not like our kids come to us and ask us to hold them back. We are doing it to them and then sell them on the idea or just don’t even care enough to give an explanation and just say “you’re doing it”.
3:37 two
Can’t believe Logan has two tittles on bullshit calls
Steibers not a true 4 timer
Stieber*
They missed the takedown by Oliver at the end...........but they also missed the takedown by Steiber in the first - maybe a makeup call
Are you talking about the sequence at 3:37? If you are I can see both ways (TD or no TD), but I personally think it’s not just because of how the movement was continuous and LS didn’t really *maintain* control of the position.
Ya they give reaction time and Steiner didn’t maintain control definitely NOT a TD. I also don’t understand why the whole match the ref verbalized still neutral and keep wrestling during scrambles but failed to verbalize during the final TD.
@@sabrewolf9567 by that rationale, the first takedown by Oliver should not have been called so quick - needs to be consistent - all three are takedowns or none. And yes, once it was it was called a takedown in the first by Oliver, Steiber conceded.
@@cowboylumberjack8799 what are you talking about there was no scramble or reaction time involved with the first takedown or last contested one are you really trying to compare them as all being scrambles? When there’s continued motion then refs allow for reaction time there was not continued motion on the first TD thus no need to allow for reaction time, pretty basic.
@@sabrewolf9567 it was called when his hand barely touched the mat for a split second - longer than when Logan had the far leg - either could have been called a takedown or neither - pretty basic - yes
I always thought you had to climb the hips in this situation at this time in the sports history.
You didn't have to climb the hips, but you did have to get your head out. Definitely not 2 then, definitely looks like 2 and is clearly 2 now, so I understand why people are all arguing it's 2.
Logan Should never won that championship.
Oliver won...hands down takedown and was denied being a 3xer by bad refereeing!
Side ref called 2. Not many people know that.
And that was a focal point that season. That you had to clear your head for the TD. You had to get your head out. Refs went through this exact position with us before the match. Definitely, absolutely 2 now. Just as definitely, NOT 2 back then.
😂
Robbery.
This was a massive robbery. I like Logan but Jordan Oliver should have won this match. The refs really blew it
Yup. Logan is still a beast and a 3x champ. But Oliver deserved that win. And Logan KNOWS it. Guaranteed every time the see each other from then to now to 25 years from now, they BOTH know the truth.
3x Champ Stieber 💪💪
Jordan beat Logan in this match. It was bs
Steiber went to Tythsons School of Speechhhh
Oliver had the takedown. I don’t know how you miss that as a ref.
Jordan Oliver won that match. Period... What's messed up, is that Logan Steiber went on to win 3 (legitimate) titles. But those are the only national titles Steiber should have. Instead, he's in the history books with the likes of Cael Sanderson and all the greats... He's BY FAR the biggest welfare case of the
No doubt... Jordan Oliver had that take down. What a rip off!
You might want to revisit the criteria for takedowns from 2012.
Sorry but yeah Steiber had two in the first hand was down so yes he does win
Both great wrestlers though but honestly that was Oliver’s match. Just saying. It’s major call blown beyond poor officiating
No doubt, that was 2 for Oliver at the end. Refs screwed him
My match I keep coming back too.👑👑💪🦾
