Hey Shane :) As a Karateka who practices kicks a lot I have to say the most important thing they teach you in traditional martial arts is getting from B to A fast just like you mentioned!Nice advise :)
Swole Fucking Meatball No we mean traditional martial arts. Stuff that works on the streets whether your opponent is armed or not and can defend you in real life scenarios.
As a kid, I wondered why Bruce Lee never advocated/taught the roundhouse kick or high kicks or any of those flashier kicks, even though he would do them in the movies. I later learned, in application, that getting the leg caught was why. He mainly emphasized non-telegraphed side kicks with direct (not circular) movement with a snap at the end which also winds up serving a similar purpose as your suggested kick withdrawal.
henryk077 high kicks should be avoided in "real" fighting thats true in general, however high kicks can be very lethal and suprising to the enemy taking that the one who throws high kicks knows absolutely what he is doing!!! unless you are 100% sure you are accurate and fast with high fancy kicks than you should not try it! its high risk high reward, if you are a black belt teakwando then yeah you are gonna very fast with high kicks and most people in street fights dont expect high kicks.
@@grailknight6794 it´s true, Muay thai fighters like Superlek has some amazing high kick knock outs, it´s a deadly kick, but you need to warm up for that stuff so trying to throw one on the street would be too much risk. Ohyes, and you might not want to you know, kill someone. Better to go for the balls or a good sidekick to the solar plexus if you ask me
Because they're not practical for street fighting, Bruce Lee used simple and fast moves, not complicated ones that take years of training to become proficient in.
Very good tips! I find that I get my leg caught a lot when sparring, but the annoying thing is that many people are really willing to sacrifice their defense by dropping hands and "chasing" your leg, to show off that they got it and then sweep you. They even allow high kicks to land on their head, while focusing on catching your foot. People need to understand that you are kicking them lightly and they have to protect themselves at all times....you can't allow kicks just to go through (especially on the head) just because it's light sparring. I always tell my teammates this and if they don't listen I do remind them with a slightly harder kick.
If you throw a kick to the mid section whilst they are throwing a lazy jab you can land a kick underneath the punch on the same side and they won't have time to catch it as they are already throwing out the punch. Great video Shane!
Aside from thanking you for your videos, thank you for making them public, so schlubs like me can download them and use them later when they don't have an internet connection. You've helped me, along with Sensai Ando, and a few others to turn my life, not around, but in a better direction. Cheers
great video. try to stand feets in line with shoulders without any wider stance or stance(Bruce lee usually no stance, mma is used to wide stances, boxing bladed unless attacking more square). and square up (your hip parallel to opponent's hip) You will be amazed how much faster you can do kicks with both legs. Also, the push kick is good. But idea is also we can bring the front with the knees down for faster back reaction. Similar for round horse kick, it is to throw the hips up before turning. Also when retract go for the shortest distance but the feet retract to hip level and retract, the bench might not be appropriate though since need the shortest distance to return.
First thing I learned at the gym. Always set up with punches to start, switch it up when you see the guy get used to it. What I usually do is make it look like I'm just throwing my usual kick, and then turn it into a teep to throw them off. Advance into a different kick or a combo. Super effective.
Good stuff. It's lame when people try to tell you that kicks don't work and they will just get you taken down. Kicks do work if you know how to use your brain.
I had my first kickboxing fight today and I was fighting a Muay Thai guy in the first 20 seconds of round 1 I realised he had bad boxing and he threw a lot of single shot kicks I also realised he was good at catching my kicks so I started to throw my kicks by setting them up with punches but I used my boxing more than kicks because my boxing was a lot better I won all the rounds in the fight I have been a huge fan of fight tips for a few years now thanks Shane for all the great content it helps a lot
Hi Shane, I'm a muay thai student, started one year ago, I always have a problem with twisting my waist while doing a round high and body kick! Any advice on that ?
Keep in mind that I'm not that flexible :) although I try to do open legs daily just to stretch my muscles so I can reach a 180 degrees on the ground, but I'm still way too far from that.
What you shared was pretty good advice, but I adopted a little technique is pretty much impossible to "Catch." The very best a person could do is the, "Stop kick." But even then, you'd have to be extremely quick, as well as proficient to do so. Sadly, I choose to keep my personal discoveries to myself. Sorry, but a guy has to excercise whatever advantage he can. Solution: Keep searching and discovering.
Hey Shane I was wondering if you could do a video on passive stretching as a martial artist. It has been shown to decrease muscle performance but on the other side it's essential for kicking... I think it's a pretty big subject so it might be worth a video... Thanks and keep up the good work man :)
For the nak muay:.... Can "push off" the actual target, after driving the kick in.....use the target itself to "push off" the target, speeding up the retraction ( experiment for yourselves with the method, on the bag and in sparring, and you will understand it right away...)
Shane (FightTips), can you please make a video on how to defend against a choke from behind whilst your sitting down and your attacker is standing up. People in my school do it other peers in the class and it does cause lots of problems. Thanks!
TheBronvioGamer Honestly if you're getting choked from behind while sitting down you're at a huge disadvantage, I don't know if there's an easy way to escape that. Someone else may have a way though.
biohazard724 try throwing bicycle punches, alternate hands as fast as you can aswell and do some "reverse punches" by putting your fist on the bag and moving it back to your guard as fast as you can
World Wolf well a quick and easy way would be to hold your opponent tight to you. This also has the added benefit of neutralizing most strikes, but if they're willing to bite or claw you might have to try something else! There's almost never a perfect solution for anything in fighting, but there may be a better way than the one I suggested.
And also---when your leg is caught by an opponent, depending on your level of athleticism---there are a few options avaliable to avert handing the advantage to your opponent. One that I learned was, bend your leg--lean IN very quickly, and "Trap" his other arm, while smackin' him either in the face, or the solar-plexus. But you MUST have lightening reflexes to pull this off...Plus--in your mind, you need to prepare for the possi- bility of a 'catch,' or, block, and have a secondary counter-move in mind. Hey Shane, could you do a video on fighting weight? I always thought it would be easier to fight at your walk around weight vs cutting weight. Maybe you can clear things up for me.
I have kicking defense in combat aikido where a kicker will deliver any kick at any part of the body in any moment he would like to kick the aikido student; and the kick no matter how fast it is, can be caught whenever the kick is above the abdominal area or higher. The surest way to kick without the leg being caught in a kicking defense is to kick low. Hit the foreleg fast and heavy to possibly limp the opponent. A kyukushin karateka did many times in a tournament kicking the foreleg of his opponent limping them to stumble.
There's a video on UA-cam of Bruce lee practicing his side kick and bringing it back really strong and fast and you just reminded me of that when you said to chamber it 👍🏽
I got kicked in the balls recently while sparing - I went into a side-body kick and he did the same, except a little lower. I wasn't wearing a box and ruptured a testicle; needed an operation. It was as awful as it sounds. Obviously I'm going to be wearing a box from now on, but are there any techniques or advice for kicking without exposing this weakness?
Don't spar. Srsly the only thing you can do is be mindful of whats happening down there so that you can use your hands to protect your balls from the kick.

Hello. I'm not a keyboard warrior. I am a legit 2nd dan Taekwondo black belt who's passion is effective fighting. What Shane said is correct but I would like to politely add another way that is very little known. There are different ways to chamber a roundhouse kick. A quicker and deceptive one is to chamber your leg like a front snap kick - and rotating it in the last moments using your hips. The roundhouse kick is naturally faster. Also I don't advise taking that small extra step with your front foot (which is often done unconsciously) before chambering the other. And try not to use your arms too much for swing. It's way too predictable. It will be a little less powerful but this is easily fixed with practice. And remember - kicking that's coming from your hips and body are always more powerful. There are also other ways to set up a roundhouse kick but I cant explain it with words.
hey Shane another great video I actually have a boxing match coming up I fought this kid before and won he is shorter than me and actually gave me a standard count but got very tired after which ended up making me win the fight do you have any tips on which way I should approach the fight it would be really helpful
Probably more a collaboration with the TKD guy but what kicks are harder to grab ? I remember TKD spinning crescent kicks (bring your foot up in an arc across your body, head high, knee bent, from inside to outside that then slams into the floor, or reverse with a spin leading it but going outside to inside) being difficult to catch cause the momentum would carry you down. But sidekicks can be caught pretty easily. ie what kicks are safest from a street fighting perspective ?
This may just be me but usually when i kick i lower my gaze slightly so i just stare into the opponent's soul now and focus on the faster movements (ones that travel shorter distances) and get in that range

stretching makes you quick faster, with less effort and more extension. It's just good. Just don't stretch too much before a combat, It may lower your kick power.
