People love to shit on presets, but auditing them and working backwards into the rationale behind them is one of the best things to try out if you’re still getting the hang of things and feeling stuck on a plateau. At the very least it’s ear training 🤷🏻♀️ Thanks as always my dude!
Adam I Totally agree. There have been many times that I start with a preset and tweak from there and go back to the original preset and it’s better than how I tweaked it! When I hear people throw shade on presets my BS meter is suddenly in the red! Ha.
I just tried these on the kit on a mix I am working on and I like them. Made some tweaks here and there on various pieces - very cool! Thanks for the tip, Dr. Bob.
Dr... great trick to keep close. EQ is nothing or everything depending on different personal factors. Old school here, old analog boards. Digital changed everything. Being able to 'tune' software drums is so much easier than tuning real drums. Spend half a gig getting my drums right, then show is over. I like listening with headphones sometimes because of sound accuracy and muffling noise in background. Very useful when having to decide on a specific setting. But, I have learned to also trust my ears when picking final sounds to keep. I use just my ears and not so great speakers because it duplicates the average listening environment. Most people aren't listening with headphones, or even earbuds. They are listening in their cars with automobile sound systems, or at home over the flat-screen TV.
@@BobbyHuff Thanks a lot. I need to get into the 21'st century, everything changed. This old analog male needs an upgrade. Took me 10 years to move from film to digital. After seeing all your cool videos, I might get back into my music.
I mean, come on! Just goes to show you why API was such a great board for drums. Like a magic, 1-click, no-fail, kick ass tom maker. Gotta love it Bobby! And to think...right in front of me on both of these the whole. damn. time.
That was instant 0 to cannons lol. One of those magic presets that's really nice to have! API is super versatile. Thanks as always, man! Loving all this content we're getting from you
Thank you! The difference is clear. Even though similar EQ can be applied with other tools, this is one example of why I've gradually gravitated toward a core set of Waves plugins for most use. They "just work" for so many important purposes, quickly and with minimal fuss. I don't have this one but it's now top of the list to check out. Cheers!
$29.99 on the Waves website at the moment - full price is allegedly $249 but I don't know how often they do specials. As the real thing costs $1249 either price is a good deal - especially with those presets!
I think it's that cut at 800 that's really making the magic, because I've never been able to achieve this before, but it also never occurred to me to cut that much in that range. I'm really curious to try it now!
@@djjazzyjeff1232 I already heard of giving your toms basically the same treatment you give your kick. Remove the boxiness, give it some low end/mid punch and make the hit audible by adding high frequencies.
Love this plugin. Great presets and I love having limited options - always get a decent sound fast. The Brainworks SSL 9000 is also incredible. Vastly different from the Waves 4000s. Cheers Bobby!
Love the fact you're using EZ 2&3 (which is what I'm on) and getting killer sounds and sharing tips! Do you load your own samples, or use theirs? I know in other videos you mention stacking three different snares along with the white noise and test tone and I loved that snare sound. Do you remember which 3? Thanks man!
Hey. I use a lot of EZ and Superior Drummer mixed with my own samples. Every now and then Addictive Drummer or a few others but mostly Toontrack stuff mixed with my own.
Wow,...this video is kinda flipping me out. When I mix drums my go to EQ plugs have always been both the API 550A and B. I have both the Waves and UA version -- but for along time I used only the Waves versions and the stock presets, especially for Toms because they just worked. I use my UA plugs more now (API Vision channel strip is amazing) because I'm completely switched over to LUNA, but the Waves 550A/B on toms. Still use the presets as a starting point and tweak to taste.
Hey Bobby! Love your videos and the little tricks you are sharing with us! This one again very usefull. My "go to - tom preset" is on an other waves plug in - "Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain". There is a preset called "Toms" - if you have the plug in - try that one, does a simmilar thing, but adds some compression and saturation as well. Thanx and looking forward to your next video. dean
@@BobbyHuff thanx, i get that. But what must i hear what make the real producers so eager. I am told you must listen in perspective. In relation to other instruments. Only then a plugin like the 550 make sense. Not as a sound of its own.
@@addickkelders2265 yes good point that you must listen in perspective to hear it in a full mix. After years of doing this I know that the Tom with this eq applied, will be a great starting point towards working much better at cutting through a track. As a drummer I feel it also brings out and focuses the tone and the attack of the drum as well without a cloudy, ganged up, low end.

Really tightened up those toms!Anyone else make a good enough version of this plugin? Waves isn’t compatible with my daw(ableton).
Is UA compatible?
I prefer live drums and all live instruments with a live audience in the same room/area. Will this be a good alternative to that?
It would all depend on the drum, drummer, mic, and room. Worth a try though but I bet it sounds good… possibly with a little tweaking.

Do you use the 4k bump primarily on the drum bus or on individual track too?
Individual tom tracks. 7k bump on snare.
Why is the sound with de 550 better? To me it’s just different. Could have been a different drumkit. So why must i use the 550?
If it doesn’t sound better to you or the kind of different you want for your Toms then no one is saying you must use it.
