Very interesting video, I forgot to ask you when you mentioned it, but what would your contingency be for stability, like if your Mac went down, or something went wrong live.
Yeah that’s the only thing I’m worried about. But I’ve tested it for a bit now at home. Seems like it works, the big test will be next week when I try it out live :S
Happy BDay, Ola! I've just received my left handed Solar A2.7 TBRM and I love it so much! Top quality guitar for a fair price. As a lefty, I'm sooo happy. Cheers
I’ve been running Fortin in to my 5150 LBX for a week or so now. Absolutely slays. Add to that the plethora of fx plugs that can be easily added to the chain it’s a winning combination. Live? Not so sure but at home this is absolutely stellar.
I like that you showcase this as a possibility. For many smaller bands this will be THE way to get great sounds live without having to worry, or without being able to afford expensive (and thus very often good) amplifiers. I read in the Fortin group that your fellow swedes Humanitys Last Breath used the Nameless live a couple of weeks ago. And also gratulerer med dagen gumman!
Yeh man I've been re-amping plugins into fx return for years. Getting some really great results. Remember you're going balanced to unbalanced. So ground lift or isolation is necessary
This video is one of the smartest videos considering the year we are in. Bands are not making money with shows, but bands still have to travel A LOT. Who pays for all the shipping, or all the rentals, and what about the consumed time at airports and ports just to get a VERY fragile tube amp from the speciality bay, and time to remove/re-add all tubes on long flights... etc. Since we are in a time where smaller not multi-millionaire bands can travel around, carry only the basics (guitar and axe-fx), and it sounds good (of course maybe not as good as the real deal, which you would probably use in a studio situation, but more then good enough for stage..with people screaming, and crazy mixes anyway, poorly treated venues), doing what you are doing is very smart, efficient and sounds great.
You could use a dedicated vst host such as plogue bidule as opposed to logic (or your personal DAW flavour) this is something I've considered using for any future live projects since I no longer have the engl fireball I used to gig with. Along with a midi foot controller and some mapping to switch/bypass plugins, the possibilities are endlless. Prefer the clean of an engl but the gain on a 5150...? now you can have both in a vst host using the foot controller to 'switch your amp channels'. Glad to see someone like you putting this concept out there in a vid!
I've done both methods live, back in 2009-2010 :) No issues. I went Guitar -> Fireface 400 -> preamp VST (Wagner Sharp v0.6) -> either IR-to-desk, or to FX loop return of an amp.
I hope Mike Fortin read my comment. after success with Fortin Nameless Plugin, please collab with Mooer and make Fortin Messugah in small form Mooer Preamp LOL
I already tried a similar solution in two concerts and it work great! Used MainStage for it, a Behringer FCB1010 for controlling the switching and an external sound card connected to the main PA. It worked flawlessly and I was quite happy with the sound. It think it is an option that guitarists should strongly consider. Actually, when you see a Mac next to a keyboard player, it is quite probably using a similar solution (MainStage + plugins). But I agree with you Ola, and it is difficult to change the mindset... I really love having physical pedals (turning physical knobs... hummm) in front of me and an amp blowing in my ears :) Again, great video and Happy - delayed, because you know what you are - Birthday!
yes, John McLaughlin did this around 2009. "The Guitar signal arrives from an M-Audio 410 via FireWire to the computer ("G4 Laptop") . I send it directly through Amplitube 2". But: if you need more presets for a gig then you need to have an external controller (i think switching preset on a mac with the feet is not so easy). So at this point a small fx unit with switches would be more easy and comfortable.
Happy birthday! Taking a computer on the road as an amp would be risky, but if you ever decide to do a smaller show/clinic maybe try out and let us know.
I ve been using this for quite a while now and it’s super handy when you are on a budget. The iPad app I m using never failed so.... I consider it a reliable solution. At least more than a tube amp :-)
Happy Birthday, Ola. I saw a video of Devin Townsend's laptop fucking up (he needs it for the samples) and if you don't have the comedic genius of Devin, it could be hard to deal with that situation. But if you need to bring a midi-footcontroller anyway, I don't really see the point of not using something like a Helix or Fractal anyway.
yes, but I only use it for feedback, to listen to myself. It changes few characteristics of the sound, but still with the same essence another cable carries the sound I really want to the speakers on stage
To my fellow noobs: If you're using a budget interface like the Volt 1 then I found that you'll need a DI box between the interface and amp to match impedances. I'm using the Pyle PDC21 with a built in Attenuator ($10) and it works great. 1. Use a balanced TRS to XLR cable to connect the interface output to the output of DI box (since we're running in reverse) 2. Use a normal instrument cable (unbalanced) to connect the DI Box Input to the Fx Return Loop on your amp 3. On the DI box turn off Ground and turn the Attenuator to -40DB to eliminate noise. You may need to adjust these settings based your setup. 4. Follow the other recommendations that Ola suggests like turning off the cabinet in the plugin/etc. 5. Melt faces
Another great video with a great idea! I think this is the future. They’re probably refining this as we speak, making it more and more reliable. Now we just need to find a way to get tone snobs to shut up 🤐 when people do this and not be all “authentic tube amp blah blah blah “ Cause it’s about how well you play anyways, in the end... Ola makes everything sound good.
Yeah, there's no way a pickup needs more wiring than a satellite receiver. I'm no guitarist, so maybe I'm just confused by the nomenclature, but a pre-amp is something that's inside the guitar and so should the digitization for that matter. Don't even get me started... should have a USB jack right on the guitar body. I think you'd have problems doing real-time processing on a laptop without a real-time operating system on there... i.e. not windows ... edit :whoops I should say the pre-amp SHOULD be inside the guitar
it's not all about playing tho give someone a poor setup and they're gonna sound worse; it's not about just _sounding good_ . it's about sounding as good as you can. my amplifier _sounds good_ on its own, but i choose to use boosts and eqs because it makes it _better_ my amplifier sounds good on its own, but i choose to run the fx loop signal stereo through another amp because it's better. 'just good' is not good enough.
Somebody in either Ola group or Fortin group asked like a week ago about how would a plugin work live... Now we know. It works flawlessly! ...at least on Mac. I'm using PC and as much as I love using it I would be hesitant of relying on a Windows laptop live. @Ola: How was the latency by the way?
Marko Mäkinen I wouldn't worry too much about PC/Mac. If you use a laptop for your LIVE music though it really should not be your home laptop. It should be clean and only have the programmes you NEED, nothing else. Shut down the browser etc. Of course, I am assuming you can simply throw money around and buy another laptop! (jk). MAc's go wrong as the youtube of Devin Townsend proves, 30 minutes trying to fix it.
guitar solos are so crazy. guitar solos are so crazy. Especially when you challenge yourself. I have ones that I have recorded that I just can never play the same again LOL. I love that solo though
I've been trying this out but going the other way, using pedals and amp distortion into a DI and then using impulse responses in Reaper. I'd love to see you try that out too, and how you think it sounds.
Nice video man but, is your Randall Satan affecting the sound before sending it to the cab? I mean, the plugin adds the effects (distortion, reverb...), Then it goes to your amp, and then it goes to your cab. Are you using the amp just as a power amp? Are you re-amping the signal?
Michael Keene from The Faceless was doing this when I saw them back in 2013, before they moved to Fractals for live situations. Can't remember what he was using, I think it was GTR, or something. He did say, but I honestly can't remember.
Ola!! the furman pq3 plugin from amplitube CFH collection in the front of a Randall RG1003 and then the pedals it's a good ideia ?? It's impossible to find any old gears in Brazil
YOU ROCK. Stay safe. I started watching again just seen my new surgeon ugh more test. Take care of yourself when your young I'm old yuck keep kicking ass.
Back in the early 2000s I used to gig with Guitar Rig 3 and 4 running on a struggling laptop. Never failed me and was a lot better than that multifx pedals I could afford at the time
I did this recently with Mercuriall Spark into my Fryette Power Station and 4x12 cab/57 mic for reamping purposes. My computer can't handle it in a live situation, though. Latency issues...
Happy birthday Ola, you handsome bastard! The setup sounds killer...but as you said, I don't think everyone is ready to trust a laptop with their live setup.
Great video Ola! I think very good Idea is to use Mercuriall Reaxis and U 530 preamps with real power amps. I have at home Engl Fireball 60 and I would try to run reaxis with engls power amp. It might me the cheapest way how to get at home Mark 2c+ sounds haha.
How about trying the physical amp head into the audio interface and using the emulated cab before sending it to FoH? 80% of the tone is in the cab so you can get that perfect mic'd up sound every time. No cab needed. Just an idea. Loving your vids as always 🤘🏻
Hi, can you use your audio interface as an FX plugins in the loop of an amp without damaging anything (for Reverbs or Delays)? i dont want to break my Audio Interface and of course dont want to damage my Amp. I am considering conecting The Guitar Input of my audio interface to FX Send of my amp and output from my audio interface to FX Return of my amp. Is it possible without damage my Rig?
Hi Ola! I saw Andrew Wade talk about reamping in this kind of scenario, but with a QSC power amplifier for the 4x12 cab. (Amp head emulation plug-in → Interface → Power amplifier → 4x12 Cab). Did you try this configuration?? Can you make a test of this? Thanks!
But why not just an AMT preamp pedal like the SS-11b you demonstrated into a Zoom 70CDR for FX then into a Moore radar? My concerns with your sugestión is ground loops, laptops can heat up too much and get too slow or die.
My amp broke up and, since them, I'm using my interface and my notebook to play in live situations. I use the Emissary plugin with Lecab, for the effects, my Angry Charlie, morning glory and zoom CDR direct in the interface. The P.A. pluged in the phone input of my M Audio. Sounds really good to me
What about the input latency of the audio interface? To keep the latency as low as possible I would need a Thunderbolt interface and a thunderbolt enabled windows laptop (will never use a mac) - for the same money I can get an fractal audio axe fx 2/3/ax8 with zero latency and built to handle rough stage and road conditions.
You know every digital modeller has latency right ? it's just low enough you don't feel it. No need for a thunderbolt or 1000$ cpu. I get 4ms round trip on a 1818vsl and almost 10year old cpu. 4ms is not noticeable. A modern 200$ would get me lower buffer size with cracks=lower latency, no need for a thunderbolt or 1000$ cpu, unless you're running lots vst's. But yeah an ax8 or helix or similar would be a lot better. Built for stage, no mainstream os to mess with, all controls on foot built in. It's just better than a laptop
+Escalator, even the cheapest no name can get reasonably close these days. I had a 6ms delay with the right drivers and setting when I use to use the cheapest guitar link clone I could find on ebay.
ViviSectia Yeah, usb2 has reached it's limits a while back and every interface maker is kinda close to it. some cheaper interfaces even have better latency than expensive ones. And if the really cheap ones have low latency too that's a really good thing
You could use something like the toneshifter 3s and a laptop live. It’s an audio interface with four control stomp buttons for patch changes and use a laptop to run amplitube or logic :) then run to front of house and use in ear monitors and skip the amp
I don't get it, why would you use a plugin when you have a Head like the Randall Satan? I could understand if we were talking about a lousy head, but in this case Iin't the preamp of the randall much better than the plugin? Or is it just to have more tones available? Or maybe you just wanted to show that it can be done and that's it? A lot of questions right there :-D
I am crazy about the amp-sims these days. It's come so far and they are so good, I just love messing around with all the settings and options. Just so many tones you can get it's almost overwhelming... almost. \m/
Ah so the output signal from the sound card is straight compatible with the FX return of the amp? No need to go through a reamp box or adjust impedance or whatever you might need to adjust?
I run amp vst plugins straight from the monitor output of my audio interface and into the Effects Return of my Peavey 5150 head. I use an unbalanced guitar cable and no reamp or DI box. It works perfectly, sounds good, no hum or noise. Try it before you spend hundreds on boxes that you may not need. The real Peavey power section and Mesa 2x12 cab make most vst plugins sound just as good as an AxeFX or Kemper if not better. If your impedence is out of whack and you have a mixer lying around with guitar level impedence switch, use it...It will correct impedence just like a reamp box does, minus the ground loop switch
Ola!!! Big fan of you and Solar guitars here from New Zealand. What exercises would you recommend to an old man (35yrs) learning to play guitar? I am able to play basic riff bang's and some songs. But i cannot nail the leads... My solo's are terrible and my notes are even worse. Anything you recommend to improve? Asking as i have played on and off but now i have invested a small fortune into gear and must get better.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME, but who gives a shit, here's a video... Using a plugin into an amplifier? Yes or no?
HBD bretheran Ola
Happy Birthday champ.
Happy birthday Ola, hope it's a slightly more than adiquit one.
Ola Englund happy birthday brother!!!! Keep kicking ass!!!!
Happy birthday sir
Any plans to update that Fortin plugin? You're using v0.0.3 and the latest one is v1.1.3. :D
If it ain't broke, don't fix it
Green Solar pre-ordered !!! 🤘🤘
Please burp in my guitar case.
Kekullain Uladh That's how Ola should bless guitars before they ship, "in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the Holy Dimebag. Buuuuuuurp"

Visceral Abomination Two?
ill disable my adblock and watch the entire ads on your video as a present, happy burthday man!!
Yeh man I've been re-amping plugins into fx return for years. Getting some really great results. Remember you're going balanced to unbalanced. So ground lift or isolation is necessary
So... how did you went from balanced to unbalanced?, Reamp box? the reamp box option seems quite expensive for me :$
Happy Metal Birthday, Ola!!!

I was using the same idea 2 years ago. Another cool thing you can do is using your DAW automations to change your sound. Great video btw!
I must say I am impressed, didn't think it'd sound that good. But when you think of it, it's not that surprising that it sounds that good
I hope Mike Fortin read my comment. after success with Fortin Nameless Plugin, please collab with Mooer and make Fortin Messugah in small form Mooer Preamp LOL
Can't you do that with the Orange Teleport tho ?
TheSaniwaa With the Orange Teleport you still need a PC to run it. A preamp pedal would be a standalone unit instead.
Fuck yes
OH SHIT
FVCK YEAAAAHHHH
I had been thinking about this. Cheers Ola, and happy birthday.

Happy birthday Ola!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY OLA! You are a badass and an awesome guy making awesome videos, please KEEP IT UP like this!
happy birthday my man, much love, have a great day!

Ola, Native instruments guitar rig (the outboard stomp thingy) might be right up your alley
Happy birthday Ola.
Happy birthday ola!
I've been using this setup since 2014. Laptop(i5 Intel)>Line 6 POD Studio UX1+POD Farm>line out from UX1>amp+efx loop return Really like it 👍😊
Happy birthday Ola, you are the best swedish metal youtuber that owns a guitar company
Happy birthday man!
Sounds awesome little complicated with setting it up.. But
So much possibility.
I ve been using this for quite a while now and it’s super handy when you are on a budget. The iPad app I m using never failed so.... I consider it a reliable solution. At least more than a tube amp :-)
Your content always manages to crack me up. 😎

That fortin amp SOUNDS killer
Happy Birthday Ola! You and I same age and Birthday. Cheers to our fallen brother Cliff Burton. Your Solar guitars are insane!
Plugins live are awesome, been doing it for years. We did Euroblast 9 with nothing but a computer and instruments
I accidentally activated the closed captions while you were soloing, and I noticed the added applauses. I see what you did there.
I've sold my amplifier, just take notebook, easy, same sound always. Love it!
Sometimes I plug into an amp, other times direct to the PA.
Always nice!
yes, but I only use it for feedback, to listen to myself.
It changes few characteristics of the sound, but still with the same essence
another cable carries the sound I really want to the speakers on stage
happy birthday Ola.

Travis K it’s 1981, the best decade is about to begin, and Ola is born! 🎂🎂🎂 On this very day! And his parents have BIG HAIR

I did this recently with Mercuriall Spark into my Fryette Power Station and 4x12 cab/57 mic for reamping purposes. My computer can't handle it in a live situation, though. Latency issues...
Totally check out Mainstage for doing this.
OF COURSE! I forgot this is the whole point of Mainstage, there are thousands of users using mainstage live - It's designed for it no?
I've been running my evh head into the Rockcrusher into my interface , bypassing the head and into the Fortin cab. Sounds pretty cool
What about using an iPad with Positive Grid Bias for live performances??
Hola OLA! Can you use Time FX Plugins into the FX Loop of an Amp?
What is the riff from that you were playing at 6:00?
By Silent Screaming from his Band Feared on the Synder album 🤟
Happy birthday Ola, you handsome bastard! The setup sounds killer...but as you said, I don't think everyone is ready to trust a laptop with their live setup.

Loving your vids as always 🤘🏻
I did this.sounds incredible.
You need a very good tube amp tho for it to sound as good as the plugin
I used bias amp with my 5150 power section and i abosutely loved it. Very quiet no weird digital haze. Tone for dayz
what would you plug in the send of the fx loop? nothing going into the amp imput?
Hi, can you use your audio interface as an FX plugins in the loop of an amp without damaging anything (for Reverbs or Delays)? i dont want to break my Audio Interface and of course dont want to damage my Amp. I am considering conecting The Guitar Input of my audio interface to FX Send of my amp and output from my audio interface to FX Return of my amp. Is it possible without damage my Rig?
What was that delay plugin? Looks easy to use and sounds so cool!
Could be nice to make us hear the comparison with AX8 :)
What about your interface output? Do you connect line level output to your randall satan? Is that not a problem?
Hi Ola! I saw Andrew Wade talk about reamping in this kind of scenario, but with a QSC power amplifier for the 4x12 cab. (Amp head emulation plug-in → Interface → Power amplifier → 4x12 Cab). Did you try this configuration?? Can you make a test of this? Thanks!

It’s an audio interface with four control stomp buttons for patch changes and use a laptop to run amplitube or logic :) then run to front of house and use in ear monitors and skip the amp
question: would we have a replacement for the AX8 from Fractal Audio?!
Happy Burfday. I enjoy your show. Rock on...
HAPPY B DAY OLA!!Btw,whats up with the Sola mug?
Happy birthday, Ola. Sounds nice. But I am an all analog guy. Si I will stay with the amp.
😂😂😂😂 your vids are hilarious. But also very informative. Keep them coming. Cheers from Michigan
Ola, what’s your experience when you gig with just a preamp. Are you plugging straight into the house amp input or using a 4CM or 7CM? Thanks 🤘
i found a kemper profile of fortin nameless. it sounds sick
I'm new to all this Signal Chain stuff but how do I reduce latency? Please help
