Thanks for bringing back this golden memory! Like diamonds in my ears, as you say. This song reminds me of a Jackie Wilson song, Reet Petite. I don't know what it is, they're two different songs. But I always associate the two. I must be getting old. LOL
This is such a great memory. ❤ This was their debut single, which made it to Number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970. Frontman General Norman Johnson, with his quirky hiccup laden style vocals, emotionally pleads for the return of his girl, with such wonderful vocals. The guitars, keyboards, drum, percussion and bass deliver an addictive melody, perfect for the lyrics. The group was extremely talented, each playing several instruments, great vocals and songwriting experience. Great reaction Handsome Harri ❤❤ Great tune Craig. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦
Great song! This and what becomes of the broken hearted are my two favorite Motown songs! They instantly put me in a great mood! Music like this is really the soundtrack of our lives!
Written & produced by ex-Motown legends Hollan-Dozier-Holland. Motown was suing them at the time, so they used pseudonym for the writing credit. The great Bob Babbitt is playing that amazing bass line. This is one of those songs that I will play for 30 minutes straight because I never want it to end.
After Holland-Dozier-Holland left Motown, they started up new two record labels, Invictus and Hot Wax, with a solid group with emerging soul artists. The Chairmen of the Board and Freda Payne ("Band of Gold") were the first hitmakers on Invictus, while the Honey Cone ("Want Ads," "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show") was the first big act on Hot Wax ("Want Ads" went to #1 on the U.S. pop charts), followed by Flaming Ember and 100 Proof Aged in Soul. What a great time to be a fan of soul, rock and pop music.
Angela Clemmons did a nice disco cover in 1982. You should check out IT WILL STAND from 1960 by the Showmen. Their lead singer is the same as Chairmen Of The Board, General Johnson
In a previous incarnation, Lead singer Norman "General" Johnson led a group called The Showmen who recorded the the all-time classic, "It Will Stand" in 1961 - give it a spin sometime. This particular track was the first release on the Invictus label (UK # INV 501) in 1970. The label was started by the legendary writers Holland, Dozier and Holland on leaving Motown in 1969. Curiously, while overseeing production on their releases, they wrote comparatively few of them, General Johnson had a hand in writing the bulk of C.O.B. and other releases. and the group had considerable success in both the US and UK charts with a string of fine singles which, sadly, dried up by the mid 1970s.( I have 12 of them!). 1974 saw a new C.O.B. sound, harder and funkier with the release of the album "Skin I'm In" - well worth investigating, as are many other excellent Invictus and sister label Hot Wax releases, particular favourites of mine are; The Barrino Brothers "I Shall Not Be Moved" and "Trapped In A Love". (both Invictus) and the Wonderful Laura Lee with the Funky as Hell "Crumbs Off The Table" (Hot Wax) which is crying out for a reaction. Here's hoping!
Thank you for listening to General Jackson and the Chairmen of the Board. They are the 'most' in the Carolina Beach Music scene in North and South Carolina. Got to hear their Carolina Girls, Carolina Man, Shagggin' the Night Away (FYI the Shag is a dance in the beach music scene) to name a few. Then you have the Band of Oz, The Embers, Fantastic Shakers just to name a few. Even the group Alabama came out with a beach music song called Dancin', Shaggin' on the Boulevard.
Harri, the lead singer General Johnson actually was with a group called the Showmen in 1961, when they had a hit with a song called "It Will Stand." Great song, a tribute to old rock and roll. You may want to react to that one!
Beach music of the Carolinas! Shagging on the dance floors with sand in our shoes!,🎉❤
Myrtle beach?
Love it! Thanks Harri and Craig 🌸💐✌️

Thanks!
H-D-H showing how essential they were to Motown in the mid-60s.
"(You’ve Got Me) Dangling On A String" next.
Great song! This and what becomes of the broken hearted are my two favorite Motown songs! They instantly put me in a great mood! Music like this is really the soundtrack of our lives!
I just love that little "brrrrrrrrrrrrrrp"

Early 70s radio magic! Thanks, Craig, for this request. Many thanks, Harri, for your reaction- yes, he does sound like Levi Stubbs.

"It Will Stand" is such a great song! R&B/soul from the early '60s, a pure joyful sound.
Pay to the piper is another hit song by Chairman of the board
Huge on the Northern Soul scene.
