I assume it's a Peltier cell. The water in the sink and coming from the tap must be at different temperatures and the cell is generating current using the heat flowing from one face to the other
That's why for non-demonstration purposes, you do not use generated energy to power your thermoelectric generator, you use heat that is available freely (lava, geysers, etc.) or excess heat generated by other ineffecient processes that would otherwise just be discarded into the atmosphere or cooling fluids.

Energy loss, always. But in theory it'd be a complete loss without harnessing some of the heat so

impractical design
i soldered the output of a electric motor to the input of a MV electricity generator. 1/4 of the power goes to the motor, the rest goes to what ever i need that requires 250 volts to operate with. like my computer.

I feel so bad for engineers, and engineering in general. They just get no respect at all.
There is no science here, folks. No one is making observations about the natural world in order to develop hypothesis which they will then develop experiments to test the hypothesis. The guy in this video did not build this thing to increase the total of human knowledge about the universe and the stuff in it.
This is engineering, or the application of human knowledge to solve problems.

this is an interesting idea, if you could power two electric motors, could one not be used to pump water out of the sink and back into the generator, creating a self sufficient system that requires no new water, but generates enough power to drive the second motor
