Also while it’s definitely not impossible for an 18 year old and a 21 year old to work out, you can be at *very* different stages of your life during that time- just graduating high school or leaving college. Not saying Dipper and Wendy could never work out- I think they’d be pretty cute when they’re older. Just saying that there’s often a huge difference in maturity and life experience between 18 and 21.

I think a majority of fans have accepted that as being what was behind the door. Ultimately, what Alex said here is what was originally gonna happen. Alongside the concept not working too well, there's also the trouble of Disney having a strict time limit on how long episodes can be. Perhaps if they had more time, this could have been a more closely explored issue, but sadly, that didn't happen, and we have only this to preserve what might have been. Yeesh, I made that sound like something a high school teacher would expect from students when tasked with over analyzing the deeper meaning of a novel.

I swear most, if not all, Mabel-haters must not have siblings because that's just how being 12 years old is like. I remember my brother and I fighting over the remote, and sobbing over not being able to watch my telenovela at the time, so hard that my parents forced him to give me the remote. I missed half the episode and I was upset all day, I think I was 12 exactly. Was I selfish? Yes. Did my brother deserve to watch his own show? Yes. Did that make me a monster? No, I was 12. And I don't think my brother holds a grudge about that shit either, I certainly hope he doesn't. And this was just because of a remote; The way Mabel handled having to start high school, her best friends missing her birthday, and her brother leaving her was already way better than I would've been able to. I remember during the summer before high school that I was having panic attacks just thinking about what it would be like, so much so my parents got me a dog to get me outside the house and to cuddle with [cause I also didn't have friends]. Like fuck, if someone found me after I had a panic attack, someone I knew had the means to do what he says, and offered to make summer last forever I would've jumped at the chance too. During that time I had fantasies about never aging and staying immortal forever, I wished I could stop my body from developing once I reached 16 and that was the "plan". This turned into a rant, but basically, Mabel acted like a normal 12 year old, and the apocalypse wasn't her fault, it was Bill's. To blame her for it is to say Bill wasn't the villain of this story, which just isn't true. [And also, why do people hate Mabel but forgive Stan? He was arguably the most selfish in the finale, almost doomed the universe because he refused to hold hands with his brother. Like?? I forgive them both, they paralleled each other so much it baffles me people didn't see that was the point]
They're describing Rick and Morty. "Hey isn't that your creepy brother that hangs out with and old guy and collects animal parts?" Dipper's apprenticeship would have been for him to do what Morty does with Rick.
Don't let the greed consume you. I accepted that the show would never get a 3rd season years back, and personally, it's so reliving. Letting go is hard, but once you do, it makes things easier.
I always thought it was the Fake Wendy who came out of that door that Dipper refused, since it did almost tempted him to give in to the Dream world bubble.
Honestly that would have been very interesting, one way they could made it into a real thing was that Mabel wanted Dipper to see that if he accepted to be Ford's apprendice he could regret that, making him understand that she doesn't actually want to live in this perfect, dream-like world, she just wants him to be on her side like always. But the memories-trial thing was so good, I'm glad they kept that
Well, actually she wants live in this world. I mean, it's understandable. If there wasn't trap and if not Bill who did all this harm, who actually refused? I mean, if you can return in any moment and all time in this world just a moment in real life, then... Who aren't wanting that?
I think the way to have done this is to have Dipper discover subconsciously that he doesn't want the apprenticeship. It could be after an adventure or him doing some cool thing and he turns to tell Mabel, but Mabel isn't there and before he can really confront that feeling he's whisked away to some other adventure. This could keep happening with Dipper getting more sad and frustrated because what's the point of doing all these cool adventures if he can't share it with his sister. Because yeah this is his thing but while he did do a bunch of mystery stuff alone during the summer, he did more cool mystery stuff with his sister, sometimes because of her, and even when they did stuff alone they were still able to talk to each other. It could cause him to realize that she was more often than not the one who tried to make him take risks with Wendy, to try and get out of his own head, who tried to remind him to take breaks and sleep when he got too into the mystery. It could have ended with Dipper confronting dream Ford and going, Dipper: "I don't want another adventure. I want to talk to my sister!" And then Ford dismisses him in some way. Ford: "There's no time for phone calls when there's science to be done!" Dipper: "Well I wouldn't have to call her if-! If she was here. *Sighs* This was dumb." Ford: Dumb? How could this be dumb? This was everything you've ever wanted!" Dipper: "But I didn't want to do this alone! I didn't want to do this without her, not yet anyway. And not forever!" Ford: "Oh come on Dipper, this is what being an adventure scientist is all about. Going out into the great unknown, facing the oddities of the world with no one holding you back! Just like me! Isn't that what you wanted?" Dipper: " Maybe I did but..." Ford: "Then what's the problem, Dipper? You're just like me! Smart, capable, adventurist-" Dipper: "and alone! You're alone Gruncle Ford! There's literally no one in your life! You were gone for 30 years and no one ever realized. Gruncle Stan took your name but never tried to hide his personality, and no one figured out something was wrong. How could they?! No one knew who you were! Why would I want that?! I don't want to be so alone that there's no one there to care when I disappear! I just-" Ford: " You just what, Dipper!" And then Dipper would realize that while he was screaming the world was deteriorating and Ford becomes bug Ford causing Dipper to freak out and scream. Dipper: " I just want my sister!" And that causes the door to open and he runs out and the episode continues as normal with maybe a few tweaks. And I now I have another wip to write.
Very interesting I wish we got to see more Dipper and Ford adventures like in Dipper and Mable vs the future when Ford and Dipper went in the space ship I wish there were more episodes like that
I wish they had found a way to make this scene work. One of the most annoying things about Gravity Falls naysayers is saying that Mabel is bad because she guilt tripped Dipper into giving up his apprenticeship with Ford. This would've shown that the apprenticeship isn't what Dipper actually wanted in the first place.
Exactly! This scene could have shown us that no, Dipper willingly has chosen to not take the offer rather than doing it for Mabel. It would have made the Mabel hater far less perhaps and made them shut up over it.

When I watched the episode, I actually thought that Wendy was the thing that was behind the door. I always thought the false Wendy exited the door to tempt Dipper during his scene by the river.
It sounds like they basically would have stayed in the bubble for years, alone, in a fake world. Would make an amazing alternate reality sequel, where Bill unintentionally trained Dipper to fight back and destroy him for good. It’d be interesting too to see how the rest of the world got on while they were in “paradise”
Or dipper would "make a time machine" and decide to go visit mabel and see that she's alone and some jerks see dipper and start laughing at them both. At least that's what I'd like

I kinda like this idea a little more, because it would show the negatives the internship with Ford would've had for Dipper. Good point though that Bill wouldn't show the negatives. I think there would've been ways to make it work, though but I also imagine the idea to make it work might've come way too late at that point anyway. Like, they don't have an infinite amount of time to work on the episode and needed to air it at some point.
I like the video, i just dont like the implications of Dipper being pretty much guilted into staying with Mabel. I just think that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity that Mabel was too childish to let him have. I don't hate you or your opinion, that's just my point of view.
Just my two cents, dipper's parents would NOT have let dipper take the apprenticeship, regardless of what ford said. if they told dippers parents about all of the monsters and demons and aliens in gravity falls AND told them that dipper was almost killed by these monsters several times, dippers parents would not only bar him from going, they would probably disown stanley for not telling them about it earlier in the summer. keeping this information from dippers parents would be irresponsible. plus, dipper's 12, and i doubt dipper's parents would send him away from them for several years. they are his PARENTS after all. i don't think they would be happy with putting a almost-stranger in charge of raising him. dippers parents don't actually know who stanford is.
Wow interesting! I feel like every character could be explored that much more if this show wasn’t on Disney. Glad Alex got to get past the censors every so often for a joke, couldn’t imagine the show any other way.
It probably would be better if Dipper had some kind organic moment of deciding that Ford's apprenticeship wouldn't be right for him instead of just giving up his dream for the sake of his sister.
I think it's nice that they didn't show the consequences of Dipper taking that apprenticeship, because that means Dipper came to the conclusion that it would be boring on his own. Character development!
This would have fixed my biggest problem of the chapter, Dipper realizing that being tutored by Ford would not make him happy and would have ruined his life by blindly following his idol, or at least planting that idea in his mind, instead of making it all happen when they start remembering the past.

Well, the best way you can is by buying the box set. Given it's been nearly 2 years since it came out, prices will have most likely gone down. That being said, it is region locked, so unless you live in Canada or the States, you can't play it without a region free DVD or Blu-ray player. I have heard that someone did upload all the commentaries online somewhere. But that was from a comment I saw in 2018. I think it was on Spotify, but I could be wrong.
It really is hard to boil down what would tempt Dipper, the way that Soos's door was so clearly getting to spend time with his dad. Everything he wants is being challenged during Weirdmageddon, which is I think basically why he's the person who gets everyone out of it. I think in-universe, whatever was behind that door wasn't enough.

I feel the original idea for Dipper's door was ultimately better because Dipper decides for himself why he doesn't want to do the apprenticeship by asking real questions. If he went with Ford he wouldn't have a normal childhood or life. He'd be a bigger outcast, lack better social skills, be unable to relate to anyone, and would be away from his family and start to drift away from them. But nope instead we have Mabel guilt tripping him for the 100th time and he decides to stay because Mabel needs him.

i can't help but feel the way it's described doesn't do the job of conveying that well either, though in the way it's framed, it kind of sounds more like peer pressure is what puts dipper off than anything to me. dipper will grow up to be seen as the "weird kid" in high school who spends time doing stuff the people around him find weird, like researching with his 'old man' uncle. i feel like it's not a good idea to highlight that because letting such shallow judgement on you get to you is both just a bad message and one that kind of feels counterintuitive to a lot of what makes the show and ending special - dipper and mabel have _always_ been weird, and that's both why they've stuck together and been so important in each other's lives and why gravity falls has been so important for them, because they've met friends like wendy and candy + grenda who just enjoy hanging out with the the point of dipper losing his chance to really get to be a kid is completely good to highlight and deserved more, that's crucial to his character and what he learned over the series, but i don't like the specific way it's pitched is all

I actually really like this scene better than the Wendy one in the episode, but with one twist. What if instead of some of Mabel's friends saying Dipped was weird or something like that, it could just be an internal thing. Dipped realizes both that like with Wendy, its too perfect and.that Mabel probably would struggle without him and that while Mabel has all these friends, he hangs with an old man all day. Dipped realizes that he doesn't really want to spend his teens alone with Ford and he realizes that its too perfect to be real

Honestly that would have been very interesting, one way they could made it into a real thing was that Mabel wanted Dipper to see that if he accepted to be Ford's apprendice he could regret that, making him understand that she doesn't actually want to live in this perfect, dream-like world, she just wants him to be on her side like always.

Well, actually she wants live in this world. I mean, it's understandable. If there wasn't trap and if not Bill who did all this harm, who actually refused? I mean, if you can return in any moment and all time in this world just a moment in real life, then... Who aren't wanting that?
I think the way to have done this is to have Dipper discover subconsciously that he doesn't want the apprenticeship. It could be after an adventure or him doing some cool thing and he turns to tell Mabel, but Mabel isn't there and before he can really confront that feeling he's whisked away to some other adventure. This could keep happening with Dipper getting more sad and frustrated because what's the point of doing all these cool adventures if he can't share it with his sister. Because yeah this is his thing but while he did do a bunch of mystery stuff alone during the summer, he did more cool mystery stuff with his sister, sometimes because of her, and even when they did stuff alone they were still able to talk to each other. It could cause him to realize that she was more often than not the one who tried to make him take risks with Wendy, to try and get out of his own head, who tried to remind him to take breaks and sleep when he got too into the mystery.
It could have ended with Dipper confronting dream Ford and going,
Dipper: "I don't want another adventure. I want to talk to my sister!"
And then Ford dismisses him in some way.
Ford: "There's no time for phone calls when there's science to be done!"
Dipper: "Well I wouldn't have to call her if-! If she was here. *Sighs* This was dumb."
Ford: Dumb? How could this be dumb? This was everything you've ever wanted!"
Dipper: "But I didn't want to do this alone! I didn't want to do this without her, not yet anyway. And not forever!"
Ford: "Oh come on Dipper, this is what being an adventure scientist is all about. Going out into the great unknown, facing the oddities of the world with no one holding you back! Just like me! Isn't that what you wanted?"
Dipper: " Maybe I did but..."
Ford: "Then what's the problem, Dipper? You're just like me! Smart, capable, adventurist-"
Dipper: "and alone! You're alone Gruncle Ford! There's literally no one in your life! You were gone for 30 years and no one ever realized. Gruncle Stan took your name but never tried to hide his personality, and no one figured out something was wrong. How could they?! No one knew who you were! Why would I want that?! I don't want to be so alone that there's no one there to care when I disappear! I just-"
Ford: " You just what, Dipper!"
And then Dipper would realize that while he was screaming the world was deteriorating and Ford becomes bug Ford causing Dipper to freak out and scream.
Dipper: " I just want my sister!"
And that causes the door to open and he runs out and the episode continues as normal with maybe a few tweaks. And I now I have another wip to write.

I wish they had found a way to make this scene work. One of the most annoying things about Gravity Falls naysayers is saying that Mabel is bad because she guilt tripped Dipper into giving up his apprenticeship with Ford. This would've shown that the apprenticeship isn't what Dipper actually wanted in the first place.
Exactly! This scene could have shown us that no, Dipper willingly has chosen to not take the offer rather than doing it for Mabel. It would have made the Mabel hater far less perhaps and made them shut up over it.

I kinda like this idea a little more, because it would show the negatives the internship with Ford would've had for Dipper. Good point though that Bill wouldn't show the negatives. I think there would've been ways to make it work, though but I also imagine the idea to make it work might've come way too late at that point anyway. Like, they don't have an infinite amount of time to work on the episode and needed to air it at some point.

Just my two cents, dipper's parents would NOT have let dipper take the apprenticeship, regardless of what ford said. if they told dippers parents about all of the monsters and demons and aliens in gravity falls AND told them that dipper was almost killed by these monsters several times, dippers parents would not only bar him from going, they would probably disown stanley for not telling them about it earlier in the summer. keeping this information from dippers parents would be irresponsible. plus, dipper's 12, and i doubt dipper's parents would send him away from them for several years. they are his PARENTS after all. i don't think they would be happy with putting a almost-stranger in charge of raising him. dippers parents don't actually know who stanford is.

Well, the best way you can is by buying the box set. Given it's been nearly 2 years since it came out, prices will have most likely gone down. That being said, it is region locked, so unless you live in Canada or the States, you can't play it without a region free DVD or Blu-ray player.
I have heard that someone did upload all the commentaries online somewhere. But that was from a comment I saw in 2018. I think it was on Spotify, but I could be wrong.
It really is hard to boil down what would tempt Dipper, the way that Soos's door was so clearly getting to spend time with his dad. Everything he wants is being challenged during Weirdmageddon, which is I think basically why he's the person who gets everyone out of it. I think in-universe, whatever was behind that door wasn't enough.

I feel the original idea for Dipper's door was ultimately better because Dipper decides for himself why he doesn't want to do the apprenticeship by asking real questions. If he went with Ford he wouldn't have a normal childhood or life. He'd be a bigger outcast, lack better social skills, be unable to relate to anyone, and would be away from his family and start to drift away from them. But nope instead we have Mabel guilt tripping him for the 100th time and he decides to stay because Mabel needs him.

i can't help but feel the way it's described doesn't do the job of conveying that well either, though
in the way it's framed, it kind of sounds more like peer pressure is what puts dipper off than anything to me. dipper will grow up to be seen as the "weird kid" in high school who spends time doing stuff the people around him find weird, like researching with his 'old man' uncle. i feel like it's not a good idea to highlight that because letting such shallow judgement on you get to you is both just a bad message and one that kind of feels counterintuitive to a lot of what makes the show and ending special - dipper and mabel have _always_ been weird, and that's both why they've stuck together and been so important in each other's lives and why gravity falls has been so important for them, because they've met friends like wendy and candy + grenda who just enjoy hanging out with the
the point of dipper losing his chance to really get to be a kid is completely good to highlight and deserved more, that's crucial to his character and what he learned over the series, but i don't like the specific way it's pitched is all

I actually really like this scene better than the Wendy one in the episode, but with one twist. What if instead of some of Mabel's friends saying Dipped was weird or something like that, it could just be an internal thing. Dipped realizes both that like with Wendy, its too perfect and.that Mabel probably would struggle without him and that while Mabel has all these friends, he hangs with an old man all day. Dipped realizes that he doesn't really want to spend his teens alone with Ford and he realizes that its too perfect to be real
