Hi Fella. I just love those old round body fishing reels. They're like, a million years old, but they're still so solid and a wonderful experience to fish with. You don't get with modern reels that change their specs every six months and are in, then out of vogue and left in a cupboard, never to see the light of day again. I have a couple of 304s and 305s, and a 315, and over here in the UK you can pick them up for next to nothing, and they seem to be built to last forever. I just love to fish them. Many thanks for this video. Great to see the old-school reels being used. Raymondo.
Hello my Friend!! 😃 There’s nothing like taking an old reel you found in some old second hand shop or antique store, cleaning it up, and putting it back out there doing what it was intended to do. It’s great feeling. The Garcia Mitchell’s were some of my favorites. The 300’s series were everywhere and like you said, easy to find!! Some are completely worn out and some clean up to look brand new. I love using the old stuff But just when you think you seen almost everything out there, I’ll come across something I’ve never seen before.. that’s another reason why I can’t stop looking!! 👁️ 👁️ 🎣 Thanks so much for watching my friend!! I truly appreciate you and a Big Howdy 🤠 from Virginia!! Willie
Same here Old Sport. Just when you think you've seen them all... I'm currently bidding on a couple of really frickin' out there reels, and if I end up with them I'll let you know and see what you think. Many thanks for your reply. Raymondo.
@@raymondthompson1476 🤞🏻I wish you luck on your bids!! I’d be very curious to know what they are… I’ve come across some some very cool ones quite recently. Luxor, Record, Spinster just to name a few. Who knows how many more are out there waiting to be discovered and returned to duty.
@@raymondthompson1476 He “can’t find it” ??? How do you advertise something “for sale” and not know where it is? 🙄 This is why I go to antique stores and flea markets. It’s exciting to discover them on a shelf, in person, and to be able to hold them in my hand. Check them over and see if they can be brought back to life. Of course you may not find something every time but it’s exciting when you do. Again, I wish the best of luck!! Willie
Hi Willie, off we go. That looked hard on the sore back. 🤔 The Mitchell 304 sounds like it chatters. It seemed to work great otherwise. 😊 It was nice to put a voice to Dan, since we've heard so much about him. He sounds like a great guy who knows his fishing equipment. Maybe you two can get together in a video. 🤔 Evan, you had the perfect sound for keeping count of the fish. 😉 Willie, 304? You have a good start. I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed. Nothing is impossible. It was good to see the Monkey out for a spin. 😊 Tell all Hi and meow. Take care and stay safe till next time. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Howdy Skye!! Yes, the old 304 makes a little noise. I really like it though. Gonna see if I can find another somewhere in my travels, just in case I kill this one. Dan is a great guy and also has a UA-cam channel. We talk almost 3 or 4 times a week. I was glad to get the little Monkey out for a spin. I love that little thing. 🏍️💨 I can’t wait for good weather, I think 304 is going to come quicker than I think. 🎣 🐟 Thanks for watching Skye!! Everyone says Hi Skye and Meow🐈⬛
Willie Back in 1989, fishing the Connecticut River in the town of East Windsor Ct. with a little 304 with six lb. line I came across a 35 lb. carp handled with no trouble
I love the the 304s and 314s. I hav about 5 of them. Great trout reels. I also love the Luxor’s. I’m 59 and I grew up on using these with my father. Very simple to break down and restore. I get a lot of complements by others when they see me fish. Put them on an old bamboo reel…it’s awesome! I even use the old Mitchell 894 and Luxor salt waters for stripper chunking reels. Tight lines!
Hey there! I love the 304🤠. The totally “round” housing is just cool and unique to me. Like the Luxor, it just has a very cool look to it and yes, you’re completely right about how easily cleaned up it is. I’m finding almost every time I go out, I come across something I’ve never heard of or seen before, which really gets me excited about going out searching. I have a “Record” spinning reel that really calls my name. If you haven’t heard of or seen one of those, I have an episode out on mine and I’m always looking for another. The Record company later became affiliated with Abu Garcia. Lots of history. Thanks so much for watching and keeping those old reels out there doing what they were made to do!! 🤠 Willie
I was starting to miss the Monkey! Weird I know, being that I have one too!🤣 Keep 'em comin Willie! Love the videos as always! Man,no matter how big or small largemouth are, they ALWAYS put up a huge fight!🤣🤣
Just need some decent weather my friend and that Monkey will be making lots of trips like that. It’s the greatest little “hop on and go” machine ever made. The bass were alive and kickin’, not huge but fun to catch!! As a matter a fact, I might go now!! Lol 😆
Only 290 more fish to go, and I have no doubt you will most definitely enjoy accomplishing that goal! Willie, it's good to see you out on the Monkey, I hope your back is doing better. Be safe and take care!
Hey CJ!! I think I can do it, as long as the reel holds up!! I tore it apart again this morning, cleaned it out and new grease/oil and it feels great again. Might have to do that several more times but 304 for the 304 should be possible… Yes, my back is better, not perfect. I’m being careful.🤞🏻 Thanks for watching!!
It’s (304) doing better this morning. Took it all apart, cleaned it again, regressed and oiled. It’s a talker but a little quieter now, or until all the grease gets thrown to one side.😂 It was fun talking with you while fishing. We’ll have to do it again.
I agree… The Monkey is one of those machines that seems to “create” fun out of the simplest things. It adds an extra little unexplained “something” to whatever you’re including it in… I’m constantly looking forward to the next ride…🏍️💨 Thanks for watching and commenting!! I appreciate it😊. Willie
Three warm days in a row!!😃 The fish were pushed into the cove, most likely by the Otters. Last two days have been cold again so they’re probably back out deep again. I was just eager to use that reel and glad the fish were on no matter what the size!! 😂
Sadly, the gears don’t “look” bad but I do like using that reel. I’m gonna catch my “304 fish” with it, see how it’s acting afterwards, then maybe look into a new set of gears for it. I cleaned it out again, new grease and oil. It’s quiet again but most likely once it slings all that grease to the sides, it’ll start growling. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 Thanks for watching and commenting!! Willie
I couldn’t agree with you more… There’s just something about resurrecting a cool old reel, matching it up with the right modern rod, and putting them out there doing what they’re meant to do… Anyone can go to the store and “buy” what they need to fish but to me it’s cold, redundant, and blah… it’s still “fishing” but when you add in a reel that you found on a shelf in a flea market, tear it apart, clean it up, and take it fishing, well, you have to experience it to understand 😃. Thanks for watching and commenting!! I greatly appreciate it… Willie
@@TheGraytOutdoors I agree 100%! I purchase, collect, rebuild and restore reels as a hobby. My favorites will always be anything Penn made before they stopped making them in America. But fish with old Daiwa, Garcia Mitchell, DAM, Shakespeare Royal Maroon, Langley and many more!
@@jonhammes6209 My problem is, I have favorites like Johnson, Abu Garcia, and Garcia Mitchell.. However, recently I’ve come across reels made by companies I’ve never heard of Like “Record” and “Luxor” that are absolutely awesome.. now, not every reel is a winner but every one is a learning experience and a way to give these old boys a second chance..
🤠Hey there! That’s your anti reverse switch.. If it’s in the “off position” your your reel will spin in both directions, in and out. I’ve never have had a reason to turn it off myself but there’s people out there that sometimes use it like a drag as the fish pulls you can reel in reverse to give some relief for a larger fish to tire himself out instead of burning the drag up.. other than that, seriously, I’ve never had a good reason to turn it off.. wish I had a better answer but that’s the best I got. lol 😂..
