I'm surprised you didn't rent Chinese bicycles and carry umbrellas. When I was in Kathmandu in 1980 for my trek between Dhaulagiri and Pokhara , my fellow trekkers had umbrellas which I found out were handy for sun shade as well as rain. I went to the monkey temple too. Things have gotten very modern in K town. It was very primitive when I was there. I spent some time at the Yak and Yeti hotel which used to be the old kings castle. The burger meat back then was grey and from India. Biking around K town was fun like being in a school of fish with ringing bicycle bells and honking horns and dodging walkers just going with the flow. But I was very glad to get out of that country as the people I was with were very unpleasant and I was stuck with them for a month on the trek. Could hardly wait to get away from them. You two have been everywhere. It's going to take me forever to watch all your videos.
Pro tip: there is another entrance on the other side where the steps aren't as steep and they don't charge admission- it's a little harder to find though. There is a free entrance to Boudha stupa too.
I am totally terrified of monkeys, but it was nice to see that Monkey Temple was something I could probably do, as long as they don't touch me. Thanks so much for sharing your videos!
We're just making our way through your videos from the start and I'm curious if you guys know how much weight you lost doing the hike? I never thought it was something I wanted to do but after watching all these vids, I just might! Not for the weightloss lol but I thought it was a much more rugged trek with tents and whatnot. The food looked amazing (we're vegan anyway) and the hikes seemed doable for the most part. Such a cool series!
I love your vlogs; thanks for bringing us along on your adventures. Also, I'm fine with your monetizing your channel. This is the first time I''m commenting. Kara, I love your new nap-sack. What brand is it, and can one get it in the states (or at least through the web)? I love the strap and it looks comfy, spacious and fashionable. What a great combination!!!
Glad you like it! My bag is a Kavu. I got mine at an outdoors store in Tennessee but I'm sure they're online :) There's tons of different shapes, sizes, and colors!
It' definitely worth adding a few days to a trekking trip to make sure you have time to visit the major attractions in Kathmandu! The monkey temple being one of them!
I'm withe Kara I think I'd be kinda creeped out alittle bit by the monkeys...I've heard they are kinda crazy sometimes! :0) but glad I got to see it thru your lense...BIG HUGS FROM IDAHO :0)
I now appreciate my morning coffee, just a little more! (Torke Coffee, Sheboygan, WI) Shameless...but seriously, your Vlogs are wonderful and they make our lives all better!
I been binge-watching for 3 days now from episode 1 up to where we're at here and face it this whole blog is nothing but you guys traveling from country to Country and eating we've gotten used to it but I'll know the best places to eat in every country you go to before it's over🤣🤣🤣🤣🙃
I'm usually scared of monkeys too! Except the monkeys at Swayambunath aren't scary and the same goes for the dogs there too. I'm usually pretty scared of dogs but all of the ones in Kathmandu are so sweet
The music was so good !! Could anyone tell me what the song when they were walking around the monkey temple was ? Cause it's awesome and suited the scene so much that I fell in love the moment I heard it. Keep up the great vlogs guys.
But I only saw the soundcloud.com and nothing behind the slash :( Please check again when you have free time. Thank you guys and a big thumb ups coming right away
I wish I could give you guys more than one thumb ups, 100 might be just enough. I saw your vlogs in Vietnam by chance and fell in love with you guys. The energy you guys bring to people is so refreshing that I want to see it every day. It's great to see my country through your optimistic point of view. Thank you so much :)
I think I'd be with Kara on this one. After hiking to Everest base camp and already being templed out... I would have taken one look at those stairs and said "Nope."
Once some tourists asked me the direction to the monkey temple. But there are two temples with monkeys - Swayambhu (west) and Pashupati (east). A group of young people, I speculated they were looking for some weed. So I sent them to the east. :P I think the term "Monkey temple" is only popular among the tourists.
It's called swayambunath. The story goes a Buddha called manjushri was on his way from India to china when he came across a lake with a lotus in the middle. He drained the lake which became Kathmandu and the place where the lotus was became the temple. Or so the story goes
Awesome VLOG! I watch your video’s every time I get a chance, in fact I may or may not occasionally watch them on the IPAD as I drive through town here in Virginia USA. HAPPY TRAVELS and blessings to you both!
Hey Guys, I love your adventures & information that you have shared. Very interesting. But I really hope that the Next time you visit temples, You need to be more appropriately dressed. You cannot go to Holy places, wearing such revealing t shirts & such short shorts. Honestly, you guys need to be more aware & respectful of the local culture & traditions, especially in a temple! Please guys !
It hurts when we see that our own heritages and our own belongings are being alien day by day. One example is naming Swayambhu Mahachaitya as Swayambu-nath or Monkey tempke. Sorry, it is not a monkey temple at all. It is a Chaitya. Chaitya is what it means in Newa civilisation. The Newa civilization includes Kathmandu Valley and surrounding areas. We have a Hindu-Buddhist mixed culture. But it is not nath. Why not nath? Because naath is a community that does not exist in Buddhism. It was when Nepal was ruled by Rana government who made state based ethno-lingual genocide. During this time, Nepal was declared Hindu kingdom probably promoting only one language. Then Swayambhu Mahachaitya was added, -naath. Also Khaasti Mahachaitya renamed Baudha-nath. Naath is a "sampradaya" existing in Hinduism. Why we are against this is, it diverts from the originality of heritage sites. For example: Khaasti Mahachaitya has its own meaning and significance. But naming it Baudha-nath has totally diverted it. The same problem is not just with Newa heritages, but also with Tamang, Limbu, Maithil and even Native Americans, Aboriginal Australians. So much misleading is happening. Even Nepal Tourism Board has its websites and it mentions too much on Newa festivals, jatra and all, but never mentions its significance to us. It mentions about Kathmandu, but never talks about that unique settlement topology of Kathmandu. Just one example, we had a festival called Paa-haan Chahre पाहाँ च:ह्रे and the festival related with legend of Gurumapa. However, we also have a culture of Kaa-mha sala bwaa-kegu का:म्ह सल ब्वाकेगु, culture to run horses. The festival specially relates with core part of Kathmandu. And there is a space called Tin-khyo तिंख्य: However, we can see the Ranas had started showing circus in Tin-khyo, which completely diverts idea of the festival. Moreover, Tin-khyo is now named Tudhikhel. And to justify this, the legend of Gurumapa has been manipulated into legend of Tundi. We Newa people never in our life heard this new legend of Tundi, in our festival. Even the Tourism Board website has bo mention on it. Even so many places of Kathmandu has been allegedly mis-named or renamed. Too much manipulation is happening in terms of Newa civilization. The civilization has rich/diverse culture, tradition, norms, festivals, architecture, settlement typology, dialects, scripts, etc. But all we refuse is misleading. One organisation called Nepalbhasa club even initiated "Please ask a Newa expert campaign" because these misleadings and wrong information is going widepsread. But we native inhabitants of Kathmandu are re-claiming our grabbed status. Please do not make absurd generalizations as "monkey temple; just because there are monkeys. Monkeys exist in many temples of Kathmandu.

I love when Nate says things like "Here we are with 2,000 of our closest friends" hahah

I love the tongue action at the end Nate! Ha 😆👅

This reminds me of the old Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Birds", with a slight title change, of course.
It's called swayambunath. The story goes a Buddha called manjushri was on his way from India to china when he came across a lake with a lotus in the middle. He drained the lake which became Kathmandu and the place where the lotus was became the temple. Or so the story goes
It does clear up after rain.
This is Swoyambhunath :)
Nepal is the absolute worst place on this planet. And Bhuddha was born in India. Jai Hindddddddd

There is no dress code specified for the temple, but if there was, they would dress accordingly.

Hai Friends
Hi, were you from? I,m from malaysia, i folo your canel adventur in nepel do good, opss nepal eww lol lol lol

Ugh this was boring booooo
Nate, you have a symmetrical face
