I love how your brain works and how you communicate and demonstrate your thoughts. It is a gift. Thank you for sharing this. I am working my kids to push through were we are behind, while giving reasonable expectations for them.
Andrea, I just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for these videos! I've always done literary based curriculums until about a year ago when we put our oldest two boys in a private school. We've recently pull them out and now we're running 3 businesses so I needed a more structured homeschool solution. I decided upon ACE and then I found myself LOST! Well, until I found your videos. They're so very helpful and I admire your organization, faithfulness, creativity and ingenuity! You're very inspiring. Keep it up and again, thanks for sharing!!! Just made my own Goal Card and we start tomorrow!
my school here in Singapore does this curriculum. how we write goal cards is the number of ur pace number on the top left, and the number of pages u plan to do on that day on the top right. then write from what page- what page u are doing for that subject, and do that for all the subjects. add up the total pages on that day that must add up to 24
Andrea, what bible scripture audio are ya'll listening to? And we have recently had an eye opener about the "rapture" and I have only listened to Jonathon Welton. Who have you listened to speak about this? I know this is a lot of questions but one more, what bible study do you use or do you read from scripture and then explain. Thanks and thank you for all the encouragement and helpful info in using ACE.
Hi Jessica! Our audio Bible was made by Faith Comes By Hearing (www.faithcomesbyhearing.com/). We use the NIV version, but they offer hundreds of different versions. Originally we had a CD set that Tom converted to MP3, but now they have them free to download, I think. As to the rapture, Tom and I grew up Southern Baptist and were taught Pre-Trib rapture. Then as we tried to understand certain Scriptures, we became Post-Trib. Over the last 12 years or so, we have so completely changed our understanding of eschatology that it's a moot point for us. In a nutshell, we have now come to an understanding that the end-times prophecies were referring to the end of the Old Covenant era and the events involving the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. (As Jesus said to the people of his day, "This generation shall not pass away until all these things take place.") It's hard to wrap your mind around at first, but so many things make sense now. If you are interested in exploring this idea, MrDonPreston has a UA-cam channel with hundreds of videos going in depth into Scripture about it. We didn't learn the concept from him, but when I discovered his channel I realized he was the best at explaining it. I've now spent the last year or so trying to understand why the world is the way it is now. I've learned a lot of things that I hope to share at some future point, but I realize it's a big, new topic to jump into. I can say, I have peace and joy that I never had before...
Can you tell me about the Privilege levels and what they stand for? (we use for home school, not private school and do not purchase any teacher materials)
Hey Andrea, I was always a lil confused by this when ACE says paces should be complete in 2 to 3 weeks, are you supposed to take in consideration a full week or a school week bc a school week could be 4 or 5 days and of course a regular week 7 days.
I guess I wasn't thinking when you said that on the other comment. My brain went to the wrong week! Of course, you're right. 14 days plus a test day would be three weeks. I think I need a nap!
When I was in school, Literature and Creative Writing didn't exist. Each grade level just had 6 books and a fill in the blanks sheet to use while you read (like the Basic Literature 7 & 8.) I liked some of the books, some I didn't. Now I assign the books, as well as a selection of my own (or let the kids choose from our personal library.) Then, as I said, they read and narrate or read and do a book report.
Would you be willing to share your book report form for your younger children? I tried the Lit/CW with my 3rd grade daughter and it has been a disaster. Too many tears!
The one I made is still a work in progress, but I'll suggest that you could do reading and narrating. I have my kids set a timer and read for 15 minutes (or whatever they can handle at their age) and the narrate for a 5 minutes. They have a piece of notebook paper that they write anything and everything they remember from the story. They don't have to write everything from the day's reading; they just write as much as they can in five minutes. In the past, once they got to the end of the book, I'd find a book report form on-line (there are tons of them!), print it out and have them fill it in.
Thanks for replying so quickly Andrea! I really like your idea of a written narration. Oral narrations haven't worked for us but this should as my daughter loves writing stories .I plan to give it a go next week.
It depends on why they didn't. If they ran into difficulties that took more time than we expected or we had a short day, I change the goal to be fewer pages. If it's because they were playing around and wasting time, we notify Dad who has a talk with them and they have to spend the evening finishing their work rather than doing fun things with the family.
Can anyone tell me about the "Goals A__ C__ E__" at the top, under the name. We don't purchase any teacher materials (son is in third grade) and we are curious as to what it means and how to use it ;) Any help appreciated :)
There is a privilege system in ACE schools and the letters A, C, and E denote which privilege level someone is on. Students are supposed to mark which privilege level they are working toward by marking their goal (A_, C_ or E_) on the goal card. I've adapted the privilege system for use at home. I change it a little every year, but here's a video from a couple of years ago: ua-cam.com/video/9GkWZj4zL_k/v-deo.html
We use the Literature books that go with the Literature and Creative writing PACEs, we just don't use the PACEs. The kids read the books and then narrate them for me or write a book report. In 7th and 8th grade, we do the Basic Literature PACEs.
Yes that works, too. Actually, three weeks per PACE will get you done with 12 PACEs per year. In the younger grades, the page numbers are usually the same, so that works fine. In the older grades, they can start to vary (27 pages in one PACE, 51 in another, etc.) That's why I got in the habit of adding the whole year up at once to account for those variations. Of course, in real life I use a calculator instead of long division, too! :)

Very helpful thanks! We started using goal cards today!

On the ACE goal cards there are blanks to fill in under name like Goal: A_C_E_ Bilble etc what is that for ?
That's to mark which privilege level the student is working toward that week.
Can you tell me about the Privilege levels and what they stand for? (we use for home school, not private school and do not purchase any teacher materials)
I wish I knew what this meant as well ...
Andrea, do you set the goals or does the child set the goal? I know ACE recommends the students set the goals.

i use ace curriculum !
very cool. I'm still on the fence about using ace lit... I like the idea of it we tried one and my son disliked the little green frog book

I'm not a big fan on the lit paces. I may not continue using them. just my opinion. some of it is a little too mixed up.
Claire Cook I felt like they were too abstract.

Thumbs up!
That*s how I did different workbooks!
How do you address the kids not hitting their goals?
It depends on why they didn't. If they ran into difficulties that took more time than we expected or we had a short day, I change the goal to be fewer pages. I see literature is blank... do you guys use something else for that subject ?
We use the Literature books that go with the Literature and Creative writing PACEs, we just don't use the PACEs. The kids read the books and then narrate them for me or write a book report. In 7th and 8th grade, we do the Basic Literature PACEs.
+Andrea Mills oh, I like this idea! using just the books. I have 3 levels of books. they are good books.
How to grade the work?
Woah ok i go to VCS victory Christian school and that the only school ive ever been to ive been doing ACE paces almost my hole life
Omg I miss goal setting😻😿
I don't understand. Why is English starting on page 8,the next subject page 16. Shouldn't they all start on the same page number
They were already working on that one :)
Whoa!!! that was a lot of math lol. Just take the number of pages in the pace and divide by 14, which is two weeks.
Yes that works, too. Actually, three weeks per PACE will get you done with 12 PACEs per year. In the younger grades, the page numbers are usually the same, so that works fine. +Andrea Mills loved your unassisted birth video by the way 👏👏👏

I do this at my school I don't like it that much
