I too enjoyed this video - a very nice description of the thought process when troubleshooting. I agree - don't want to replace expensive parts when they are working, but some things wear out and it is worth doing preventative maintenance - like replacing plugs etc. when it is convenient for you- vice leaving a loved one stranded on the side of the road.
Awesome Video!...I had a 2000 Toyota Rav4 Cylinder 2 misfire and check engine light on. By watching this video..now I know exactly how to fix the problem. Thank you for the awesome video I am able to save a lot of money.
I just bought a 1999. It was running great for 3 days then after pumping gas started to struggle and now has a misfire. It’s real shaky. I cleaned IAC valve. Checked spark plugs. I listened to the injectors and they all vibrate. The one cylinder that is showing issue is number 4. I checked the K ohms and it’s showing over 13. Don’t know what else to check. Hope it’s not head gasket.
I disagree with 20alphabet ,having just changed the plugs on my Daughters car 96Rav. they were knackered I could have just adjusted the gaps but for the cost of 4 new plugs I would rather replace. car runs a whole lot better.
Years ago I was a service advisor. I'm also a pretty decent technician. Anyway, the hardest thing to do was explain to a clueless customer that there may be more than one problem with the car. Especially frustrating was when it was obvious they did not take care of the car and it was very highly likely there was multiple problems. The more ignorant customers always insisted we were trying to rip them off during the process of getting all the issues fixed in order to finally get to the source problem. Enjoyed working with the mechanics, hated the stupid customers. Not all customers, just the stupid ones.
+1 chrytech93 I find fuel trim confusing and complicated, because it's a secondary reaction to a sensor. Even the description lean vs rich seems to be a misnormer, when you're only measuring oxygen, and extra fuel is a secondary computer reaction. But the real reason I don't like it is that you need a labscope to find out how the computer is responding. Without a scope the diagnosis would have been almost as fast. Thanks for posting these videos, Duane.
With cylinder is not firing there will be excess of air (O2 in the exhaust); The O2 sensor cannot see raw fuel but it will detect unused O2. Therefore PCM will damp fuel across the board to compensate. The emission tester therefore will pickup normal CO and excessive HC from non firing cylinder
@CoolasIce2 ? How would you know if it sprays fuel? If there is power at the harness as the test light diode indicated, what would applying 12 volts to the fuel injector accomplish? I'm not following you.
@dmorley100 It's usually not gonna be an extreme addition cause one, you still gotta think about catalyst protection in this whole deal, and two, in the case of a spark misfire, some of the unburned gas may actually burn while going down the exhaust causing the O2 sensor reading to not go all the way lean while the miss is occuring, whereas in a fuel misfire this wouldn't happen cause there's nothing there to burn.
I know what you said in the video, but I'm kinda-sorta thinkin along the same lines as chrytech93, although he and I part ways in that I actually DO use fuel trims for diagnosing misfires, especially on Fords. It seems like a lot of misfires I've had, the fuel trims were way up due to what seemed to be PCM default action. The O2 sensor has no way to sense unburned fuel, at least none that I'm aware of, so it seems to me that a no-spark miss COULD throw off fuel trim. What do you think about this
I used a stethoscope and put it on the end of a long screw driver handle and listened to my injectors - I can definitely hear the rhythmic Tap tap tap of the injectors individually.
Realfix I’m working on a 2010 rav4 4cinders,p0303 code, exchange injector, coil, spark plugs from a known good piston same problem, comprecion is good. Most of the time the problem is only at high speed or climb a high level.thanks in advance for your help.
Spark plugs don't just go bad. They can be dirty and need cleaning, but that typically takes care of that... and both wires AND plugs could easily be tested to see if they NEED to be replaced. If they're doing their job, they needn't be replaced. This old guy IS throwing parts at it. As you see, the new wires and plugs didn't fix anything because they weren't the problem (however, the customer still had to pony-up the money for an unnecessary sale). The fact that this video has so many likes to dislikes shows that he's good at his craft... a sheister.
Plugs are so cheap I usually swap mine even if they're not bad. Newer plug will have a stronger arc, hands down. Changing all the plugs is cheaper than an oil change. Unless you've got a distributorless setup with waste spark... when you need double platinum plugs, those are a bit pricey.
yes thats shot.. most of the time a simple oring and filter kit does the job, if its shorted and it needs replacement always use genuine Denso fuel injectors! chinese fakes do not perform the same, the resistance on them will be different due to the quality of the metals inside and will light up the dreaded check engine light making you replace them again perfect tutorial! -Bryan
@chrytech93 I may have to stretch this out over more than 1 comment. Actually, I've been doin some thinkin on this since this came up, and in most cases, I think you kinda-sorta can. Now the Rav 4 in this video is gonna be an obvious exception to what I'm about to say, but it seems to me most of the time when the PCM ups the fuel trim in response to a misfire of any type, it only bumps it up some.
I have the same exact car only in MT and it's a 2000 year model. My Rav4 has over 200,000 miles and I just recently had a random misfire that was due to cheap spark plugs and original (old) wires. Great video but I would have liked to see how you managed to get in there and remove all the injectors from the fuel rail in that tight space.
I have the same car. The 4th injector isn't working. But i'm in doubt in how to replace it. Does i need to relief fuel pressure? how? need for removing the rail? in the video i just saw you pulling the injector. please if someone help i'll be very aprecciated.
You said the coil on #2 was only getting 10 KV where it's suppose to get 30 KV. what's a KV? A kilo volt? And I guess #2 had 2 problems with the misfire, both the coil AND the injector?
Sir please make also a video on how to deal a seldom misfire only...I encounter on tahoe 2018 very seldom misfire only how many days we tried to duplicate the misfire but theirs none but if we gave back to customer the customer duplicate it and have a video of mil on and noise occurs because we cant duplicate and all vehicle systems normal as we follow service information,as customer return on our branch..
Compare resistance of your WEAK coil to the specifications or swap it with the working cylinder coil and all of the sudden your WEAK coil will become STRONG coil. But if your customer is willing to pay why not to charge him?
Specialty tools used in this video: "CAT scanner" (Snap-on Verus); similar spark tester for coil-on plugs (Thexton 458); fuel injector tester (Waekon 76462). See Duane's site at realfixesrealfast D O T com and click "Tools for Sale" to order some of these. He gets a commission which helps him give us these great videos.
my rav4 has an intermittent misfire, its annoying, i didnt pay much for the car so its hard to justify all the effort you went through to fix it... i guess i'll just drive it until it dies.
Start at least expensive and work your way up is proper protocol. Coil is way less labor than injectors and often the culprit. "Rip-off" is a term that should be applied to unscrupulous mechanics and not hardworking tradesmen who know what they're doing.
before you did anything other then the codes and trim (at that point you know) You should have checked the injector. It's a ten minute max in testing that injector and you can do it in with alligator clips on pins or from harness! I liked your other vids but come on! Thank You, I have a Toyota RV4 98, this video was very informative in helping me understanding my car a bit more. very helpful
BEST INSTRUCTOR EVER KNEW THANK YOU sir! FOR ALL YOU TEACH US!!!
Thanks Duane!Your videos have made me a better Technician. You run a Professional outfit with a knowledgable staff.GREAT WORK!Keep em coming(videos).

I love the way u diagnose all the issues. Nd more so the equipments.
very good video, thanks for giving us part of the experience, you are the best

Thank you for sharing your knowledge 😃👍👍👍
I love your vids. It's stuff I know but since I don't have a big fancy scanner like that it's cool to see it in use and how you read it!!

being shop owner/service writer/technician, I undersatand completely
Funny how the scanner didn't pick up on the injector going high resistance. Very helpful post.
Excellent Info, thank you for the information, it was a big help.

This is the best video so far...
Great job...
Great vid, can u pop over to the UK and sort out my 2002 RAV4 with misfire?!
With cylinder is not firing there will be excess of air (O2 in the exhaust); The O2 sensor cannot see raw fuel but it will detect unused O2. Therefore PCM will damp fuel across the board to compensate. The emission tester therefore will pickup normal CO and excessive HC from non firing cylinder
you are officialy my grandpa my favorite one ivelearned more from you than anyone else

Very good sir thank you so much 😊
I used a stethoscope and put it on the end of a long screw driver handle and listened to my injectors - I can definitely hear the rhythmic Tap tap tap of the injectors individually.
Thankfully It turned out to be the spark plugs.
Great videos. How about leaving all injectors connected to the fuel rail and hooking up 12V to the injector and see if it sprays fuel.

Outstanding! Truly a rare gem, Thank you.

Dwayne you are the Batman of evidence. Like him a great detective ! Thanks Dwayne.

Ahh I have same year with same issue, original wires as well! 215,000 miles. Think I’ll try wires first wich was my original thought.
Great video🏆thanks👍
Excellent video
all of those things needed to be replaced anyways. They tested the coil and it failed.
Customer states... I was hoping to get a 100 years or a million miles out of those plugs and wires!

Whats the name of the vibration light tester?
Subscribed.........Eric sent me.
love your videos...another good site is eric the car guy....also what is the name of that tester u used for the injector sound keep up the good work
nice

Nice video as always, i like the stethescope method never new that. thanks!
really good diag tips. A great video!
The evidence point out that Mr. Injector is GUILTY!
:) Awesome job!
@dmorley100 we found a bad return line under the valve cover
THANK YOU

WOW learned alot in just the first 2 mins. Thank you
I have 99 rav4 I just replace new fuel filter but no start battery is good any comments experience ty
As usual another great video.
@studpuppy69 i should have said to remove the entire fuel rail and injectors to see the spray pattern if any
.
how many miles do you have on this rav 4

Sure, clear as mud!
Awesome thank you.
i have a duramax fuel systems problem has anyone had their block fill with diesel and what would cause that
@tatonka6969 Sounds like a classic case of bad (leaking) injectors. Commom problem on Duramax's. Replace them all at the same time.
my rav4 has an intermittent misfire, its annoying, i didnt pay much for the car so its hard to justify all the effort you went through to fix it... i guess i'll just drive it until it dies.
Thats fucking stupid. these tests are easy.
given the mileage isn't it prudent to just replace all four injectors?
sure but its always nice to know the problem
this is like csi mechanic
What if the injector worked, then what do you wanna look for?
Was the injector all along customer got rip off on the coil the spark plugs wire and plug I can understand
Start at least expensive and work your way up is proper protocol. Coil is way less labor than injectors and often the culprit. "Rip-off" is a term that should be applied to unscrupulous mechanics and not hardworking tradesmen who know what they're doing.
the coil was bad and plugs has 160k on them you moron. They needed to replaced anyways.
the injector quit working and made the coil go bad
VERUS!!
I would replace all the injectors not just one shoot might as well same with spark plugs make sense ae?
Yes all injectors and plugs leave the wires :) wires are easy at any time injectors take more time and $$
before you did anything other then the codes and trim (at that point you know) You should have checked the injector. It's a ten minute max in testing that injector and you can do it in with alligator clips on pins or from harness!
I liked your other vids but come on!
Fix the problem and than recommend new wires and plugs.
My 1993 Toyota had 200,000 + on stock wires! Toyota wires last forever!
