Larry: I've owned a pool about 25 years....I never thought about cleaning the filter from the INSIDE.....brilliant idea. I really enjoyed the rooster, dog and your grandchild.
After watching tons of "professional" videos about cleaning your filter, YOU came up with the best idea!

Thanks Larry! I am a retired engineer that was going to make a back wash tool but, when I saw your video that saved me a lot of trial and error! Thanks again! Good video and great idea, simple and effective.

BRILLIANT idea, Larry. I've been thinking the same thing myself: why clean from OUTSIDE, when you want to PUSH the dirt OUT from the INSIDE!!! Thank you for these simple instructions.

Simply put, I agree with ALL of these other comments. Larry, you ARE a genius! I just bought a house with a cartridge pool filter and have been thinking of a way to backwash the cartridges to save time and do a more efficient job. Your idea is perfect. Love the video and THANK YOU!!!

The concept of cleaning from inside to out is spot on. I now use a simple hose sprayer which spreads the water as the handle is turned. Same thing but even cheaper, works well if you have a relatively high pressure from you water supply. Loved the telling the dogs to 'Shut up'! Cracked me up.

Larry, you are a genius! I built one for my husband and only had one correction. My brother, the nuclear engineer, pointed out that I had the wrong sex for the hose end. One more trip to the hardware store and we're all set! This was a fun project and I even impressed the guys at Home Depot! LOVED the special effects!!

Thank you Larry; I like your style. I've had the same question about cleaning the filter from the outside. From now on it will be done with the tool you created which I will build as you have. It was good hearing a dog barking and a rooster crowing. I grew up in that kind of home and it was nice to reminisce about the past.
    Thanks again.

Very cool. Love the extra “sound effects” in your video. Really emphasizes the DIY of your idea.
The first time I cleaned my pool filters, I had the same thought as you - I’m just forcing the dirt further into the filter media!
I absolutely hate cleaning the pool filters, and I’m willing to go to extreme lengths to get them as clean as possible to extend the cleaning cycle.
I made a contraption almost identical to yours, but it wasn’t at all effective.
My water pressure is apparently not as high as yours as the spray from the head (I used exactly the same one) wasn’t nearly as strong as what you get in your video.
I also tried a black plastic shrub head that has like fifteen “streams” coming out instead of the 360 degree “mist”.
Neither seemed to work very well, as the perforated PVC pipe core of the filter blocked the flow from going out to the filter and almost all the water simply came out the bottom - there was very little going through the paper.
I came up with a similar concept that seems to work very well for me.
I use air to push the fine particles (and oils etc.) out of the paper. The air isn’t blocked by the perforated PVC core and finds its way to every portion of the filter.
I soak them for a while in cleaner, then use my shop-vac with the hose connected to the output (blow) side.
I just stand the filter up and use my hands to kind of form a seal with the top of the filter as I stick the shop-vac hose into the filter.
It’s kind of fun to watch the bubble foam come out all over the filter.
I then hose off the filter, the “conventional way” and repeat the soak/blow/hose cycle again.
My theory/feeling is that the combination of soap in the paper, getting blown out of (rather than into) the filter helps to dislodge the particles and oils embedded in the filter paper.
NOTE: I don’t use the full pressure of the shop-vac (I let some air leak out) because I’m afraid the pressure from inside the filter might rupture the bands and blow the filter up like a huge balloon.
After cleaning this way, the pump pressure is always as low as when I installed the filters brand new.

Larry, great informative video. I've tried TSP but have better luck with dish washing detergent in water in my little 1 gallon garden sprayer. Hadn't thought about the shrub sprayer. Will assemble one tomorrow but will probably just kink the hose to shut off flow. Thanks for the idea.

LMAO!!!! This is the best How-to video ever! Mr. Larry, you should start a web series on your other inventions you have because this one is great! Great video, I had the same thought but hadn’t made a device yet.....you make good sense and cut down my number of try outs for us home inventors, if you added a spinning centrifuge to it I think it would be hard to beat........you have a friendly non condescending way to deliver your idea....love the dog and the rooster....keep them in your next video
The reason the filter suppliers don’t make a good solution is to keep selling us new filters.

Anyone that has ever cleaned an automotive air cleaner knows you clean one from the inside out.. WHY pool people can't seem to figure this out is beyond me.. Props to you sir. I have made an adapter for my leaf blower and I blow them out while they are soaking in my garbage can full of cleaning solution. It works pretty well also. Then I rinse them off..

I'm new to cleaning filters & this is exactly what I thought! You have to clean it from the inside! I was surprised to find what you did - No tool available to clean from the inside. I have 8 filters to clean now (4 pool & 4 spa) & am going to make one this week.
You really should've patented this and marketed it but thank you for sharing your idea. I love making stuff like this (I'm making my own spa cover lifer now). You're a smart dude and just saved me a bunch of time figuring this out on my own. I do like the idea of the Blaster to finish the job but you're correct - You have to loosen it up first from the inside. Will have to decide if the $150 for the Blaster is worth it. Could probably make one of them too, lol.

I'm going to make u a video... It consists of using a 4 inch metal HVAC vent cap on one end of the filter, then another on the other side, but with a 3/4 in hole cut into it... I then take a plastic hose connector and install it to the hole, making sure when installed it has the hose connection on the outside... These vent caps fit nice and snug... Connect a hose, turn it on, let it run... If u have good pressure, u get a lot of the gunk in the creases out...

Spraying from the outside will work. Just aim the water at a downward angle to the filter, not directly into it. Start at the top and work your way down and around the entire circumference. After completing the first pass, I turn the filter upside down and repeat. Remember that one end of the filter is marked as "bottom" (or is it top?). When Larry had his magic wand inside the cartridge, I couldn't see any dirty water coming out. Maybe it's my eyes.

Same here, I was hoping he would do it on cement to see if dirt actually come off. Good idea but I think the the spray pressure might need a little higher. Wish he showed the filter pressure reading for after. Regardless, it’s cheap enough to build I might want to try to make one. Maybe there there are stronger spray heads available, or add a sprinkler body to boost the spray. Currently I just rinse off the excessive dirt, let it dry completely, then use a vacuum plower to blow out the dried dirt. Dirt are easy to remove when they are dry.

Larry and folks: innovative concept. But first look inside any of the cylindrical paper cartridge pool filters and you'll see an inner cylinder shell with a limited number of small holes -- so inside out cleaning is the right direction BUT the inner cylinder, necessary to prevent the filter from imploding under pressure, presents such a small access to the filter pleats themselves that this can't realistically clean the entire filter up and down and around very efficiently. I suspect and the video shows that you'll have to hose off the outside pleats anyway since much of the area will remain dirty. So how much "efficiency" have you actually gained? I'd like to see comments from people who assembled and used this on how much BETTER this technique worked than simply hosing the outside at a 45-degree angle. I believe that's why no companies sell such a product commercially -- because they know better from simple engineering. Thanks for the very entertaining video anyway!

    • @chuckschillingvideos
      @chuckschillingvideos Рік тому

I think this is correct and that the only way to deal with this is to entirely seal the inner chamber of the filter while you inject high pressure water from one end and force the water out through the pleats instead of just allowing it to bounce off the plastic structure and run down to the bottom.

Sorry…been servicing pools for 42 years, I know many and I mean many, pool guys.
Many hundreds of years experience total, all do it the same way.
A nozzle, the cone shaped kind with a single and small hole in the end.
A shut off valve screwed to it, sprayed at the outside of the filter in a systematic top to bottom way.
