    For your tomatoes I would also cut off the tops so the plant puts more energy into the tomatoes than growing up and really tall

    Feel with your hand whether the head of cabbage is tight and solid. A really hard/tight feeling head of cabbage is ready to harvest.

    When I was little, we used to pick the green tomatoes, and wrap them in newspaper. In a few days they began to turn red. That was long before I saw the great film "Fried Green Tomatoes" ! 🍅🍅🍅

    I’m so sorry you’re having to dealing with break ins! I planted my tomatoes outside this year and I couldn’t believe how well they did! I only did it because I didn’t get the polytunnel up in time 😅 but I think I’ll be doing it again next year 👍

    Cut the tomato support lol. Robyn is marking his territory and try a few loud, claping of the hands and the sound vibration is a preditor to the bee and should make the bee leave. I remember leaving tomatoes to rippen, like a another person stated. Thankyou for a wonderful vidio.

    Possibly reduce watering the tomatoes a little, the theory is that this stresses the plant a little to “hurry up” and ripen it’s fruit for seeds (in case there’s a drought) but don’t stop watering altogether.

    It really is wonderful to see how far you've come since you first started the plot Emma. Your determination and perseverance is incredible. And it's joyous to see you interacting with the wildlife and being so cheerful. Gone are the "bloody fox" days but fondly remembered. And after the tomato incident here, I still think you're the Bridget Jones of gardening! Fingers crossed they live and change colour soon. Brassica's doing great. How's the pond?

    On another UA-cam allotmenteer site he said tomatoes rely not only on sunshine but do need heat but I noticed your poly tunnel is left open so will obviously not retain heat. Furthermore, the picked tomatoes will only ripen say in a brown paper bag if already started to ripen on the plant.

    I would say that the cabbage that is balling up is ready but you could also always let it get bigger It’s good seeing a kid gardening since I am a gardening UA-camr myself love the channel ❤

    Catch all the slugs you can after- Acquiring a 5 gallon tub (a basic food grade plastic tub with pin hole perforated lid is ideal). Place a dodgy cabbage or similar inside and fill the tub up until half the cabbage is covered. Put all your collected slugs on the cabbage island. Stand this in a cool shaded spot and supply daily with food and slugs Do this for one month and yes it stinks but use the water around the cabbage (replace) and continue. Takes a few years however your slug problem will be no more as the natural nematodes that target slugs increase, giving you a slug free environment. Start now and keep going.

    Here in Denmark, the tomatoes also has taken way too long time to ripen. I think we have had almost the same weather as you during summer. And now they turn red, and don't taste of anything. It's a very bad year for tomatoes

    Cabbage are ready to harvest we had the same problem with people breaking into our sheds as well and we have high fences all round the plots also helped their selfs to the vegetables aswell tried to get more people intestate in the plots or you could have the chance of them saying not being used and then sold to a developer like they did around here those who were using them move to a allotment like the saying goes used or loss it

    🍅You can harvest the tomatoes when they’re green. It’s a myth that they need to be ripened on the vine, they’ll happily ripen on your windowsill at home. As long as they’ve fully grown 🍅

    Hi I’m new to your channel and loving it 😊 I’ve been growing tomatoes outside for years now and this year they are taking a long time to ripen. Pick them when they are green and you know they will not grow anymore and put them in a bowl, tomatoes release gases which help them ripen. Gather them altogether and they will soon turn red 😊 good luck

    Take the tops off the Toms Emma, it will concentrate on the ones already there... Alternatively they will ripen in a cardboard box, or on your window sills.

    With tomatoes I'd double check that fertilizer is enough. Tomatoes are greedy plants for potassium - they won't get ready without potassium. Wood ash also would help. And sometimes a tiny scar on the stem below the fruit make the plant rush into finishing the fruit before the plant dies.

    • @astraaj435
      @astraaj435 Рік тому

      And also banana peal is rich with potassium. You can do peal "tea" and water them every time you come along.

  • @robputt

    Emma, I sent you an email a few months ago about this exact problem and some clever geekery I am developing to try and help alert plot holders early when thieves are breaking into sheds. Let me know your thoughts, if you like I can send you a free door sensor for you to play with on your shed door.

    Glad you escaped the vandals Emma. Seeing those abandoned plots is testament to the fact that keeping an allotment is hard work which many of us non-gardeners fail to appreciate. Also nice to see the kids having a go as well, who knows, you could be sowing the seeds for the next Alan Titchmarsh!
    Take care, don't leave anything valuable there and enjoy the fruits of your labor with all those lovely harvests...especially the apples 🍎 😉

    It’s so sad that people feel the need to destroy what someone else has built , pleased your plot escaped those moronic vandals , it was nice seeing your son getting involved on you plot , maybe he’ll develop an interest in growing food in the future, I would take the hard cabbage it would make a nice meal before the slugs eat any more of it. With regards to your tomatoes if you put them on a sunny window sill with a ripe banana they will ripen, but also at this stage of growth cut back on watering to stress them a little and now you’ve opened up the plants to let more light in that should speed them up, I still have some green ones on my indoor plants but the outdoor plants have ripened faster , could be because the had to deal with more challenges.

  • @lovecara1
    @lovecara1 Рік тому

    It's not the Sun that ripens the tomatoes it's a chemical that's released, it needs heat to release that but when it gets to over 80 degrees like it has done in the uk it stops the ripening process so I was told to snip the tops off and cut off a lot of excess leaves and pinch out some of the flowers then it will stop wasting it's energy on that start releasing the chemical etheline and start ripening. It works as my tomato plants are all ripening now.
