Derk is so natural in front of the camera and a wonderful addition to your videos. HOWEVER, when I saw you with Mengzai and how free and easy you were able to converse together in Chinese I can totally understand why you need to do your own thing once in awhile and that the best thing about your videos is when you converse naturally with the locals. Okay, let's put it this way....I was a really big fan, a faithful follower, from a very very far far continent (Africa/Morocco)....but now that you brought the Star Wars, Han Solo kinda stuff....I LOVE YOU EVEN MORE !!!!!!!!!
Absolutely love your videos Amy! I'm of distant Chinese descent and I feel like I learn as much about Chinese food and culture from you as my own parents! Much love from back home in Sydney!
Hi Amy, there is also a Shaxian snack opened in Eastwood around 2 years ago. I am from Fujian and feel it quite authentic. You can try next time when you are back to Australia.
Amy I hate you for bringing all these amazing food into my life while I'm stuck in my country eating same food every day 🤣🤣🤣. Looking forward to your next video👍
As someone who was born and raised in Sanming city (三明市) till I was 10, and lived in Sydney ever since, it’s such a delight to see you make this video, Amy! Hundun (馄炖) and peanut sauced banmian (拌面) down at the local stall used to be a staple part of my breakfast before starting school. It may sound a bit weird but we used to add some white vinegar to the banmian to add some extra flavour! Nowadays it’s the norm to see so many dishes, but back then it was really mainly those two, with some odd appearances of taro dumplings (芋饺), stired rice noodles (拌粿条), and hundun in peanut sauce (拌馄炖). Feeing very nostalgic now and thanks for the video!
I'm so excited - Amy you even found the small-ish city of Sanming, where I had a lot of childhood memories! You're really exploring China!👏👍Taro dumplings are my favourite!😍
Hey, Amy, you should really live in southern China. Food is great and cheap. The night life is more vibrant. By the way, I always love when you have a cohort in your show. I don't know how you met and where you met. They all have great personalities. Congrats! Another enjoyable episode! I enjoy watching every episode you put out on youtube!

It's really good that you get to experience all these foods while you're in China. I can't help but think that maybe I took all the cheap, delicious foods for granted as a Chinese. hi Amy, I think I met you once in Chemist Warehouse at Manly a few years ago! You helped me and my friend chose what vitamins to buy and you mentioned you were studying in Tsinghua at that time hahaha.
My parents are from Fujian so hah, I’ve heard of Shaxian! 🙂 We actually have a Shaxian Delicacies here in Chinatown, Philadelphia. I’ve only eaten there once. I wonder if it’s the same franchise.
Hey Amy, another Amy here from Sydney. Thank you heaps for show casing authentic food from Fujian. It brings so much nostalgia from my childhood. Ban Mian and Bian Rou are by far my favourite combination
Love this video and your back-and-forth with Mengzai! She appears so passionate and sincere about food, love her! Hope you can make other videos with Mengzai 🍽😁
when I heard you can really speak chinese, I started watching your video with glee, BUT when you did a referrence to 'Empire Strikes Back" - I immediately became a subscriber :D :D thanks for an interesting content 小姐, keep it up!😀
this video brings back so many memories for me. my fam is from fujian. seeing shaxian snacks and foods like banmian bianrou takes me right back to childhood when I lived with my grandparents in China.
Amy's reaction was the opposite of when I travelled to the south. A serving in Qingdao, my hometown, is two to three times larger than in the south, so I would complain about the small amount.
nice channel and good understanding of chinese food. a couple comments: 1) i've had siguotang in xiamen many times at many different places, but have never had it with coconut milk. you may or may not prefer it with coconut milk, but having it with siguotang is neither typical nor traditional in xiamen. the way you have it here, with a clear mildly sweet sauce is the same as you would normally see it in xiamen, with or without crushed ice, 2) fujianese bianrou is traditionally made with a wrapping of pork mixed with a little flour and worked obsessively until it can be rolled to a very thin and smooth wrapper. many recipes you would see online call for a regular wonton wrapper and probably many places selling 'bianrou' would just use a regular wonton wrapper. if you want to know if it is traditional bianrou, ask how the wrapper is made, 3) shaxian delicacies is not a chain like mcdonalds or burger king, where you expect not only certain menu items, but also consistency whether it's in nanning or kansas city. i'm not sure what shaxian restaurant owners agree to when they pay for the right to use the trademark, but owners tend to regard themselves as independent and there would be a lot of variation between locations, much more so than you'd see with mcdonalds, burger king, kfc. etc.
Blondie, since you are living in Changchun now, why don't you take the chance to visit Jilin City, which is only 30 minutes away on high speed rail. It is a very beautiful city.
The menu of Shaxian snacks does vary from one place to another. Many items appeared on the menu at it's place of origin aren't available in the Shaxian snack restaurants in Ningbo. Shaxian snacks does have a branch in Melbourne, but I remembered it was over-priced and it was reluctant to take cards.
I want to travel more and more eat more in China but my job doesn’t allow me to leave Shanghai because of COVID-19 😭😭 So I’m traveling and eating vicariously through you!
Though you can’t leave Shanghai, Shanghai have every food you can imagine, just explore the city. Shanghai really really big 😉. But for me, the best cheap street food usually close to university 😂
4:00 Amy if you want to get your parents to try Bianrou in Sydney, you can find a really good joint in Eastwood, in the same alley where you had malatang and also the Shunde place. It's a small place right at the entrance facing the greengrocers.
As a Fujian Australian... I'm pleasantly surprised you enjoyed Fujian food. I personally wouldn't have enjoyed a lot of the stuff you liked, like bamboo or taro, etc. too exotic for me. I personally prefer Cantonese and Northern Chinese.... oh hopefully you tried the Bianlao skin (did i even spell that right?) made from pork or the fish balls with meat inside. Those i like.
