"In our issue dedicated to the great Paul Kossoff we knew we had to review at least one guitar that promised that warm, wild sound.
But is the obvious Gibson/Epiphone route the only way to go? We've been hugely impressed by ESP's LTD models in the past couple of years
so we decided it was time to check out the classically styled ESP LTD EC-401 VF DMZ. Michael Casswell reviewed this cost effective classic."
I have the exact model, it's heavy but not as heavy as my LP. I play it more than the LP btw. Absolutely love it
I picked up a ESP LTD EC-256 for £280, put some seymour duncans in it now it sings like a perty bird and plays great too!
I recommend these guitars!! :D
Barracuda007 got an ec256 myself and just toured with it. Also upgraded the pup but i'd definitely recommend them too! looking forward to getting my 401 though :P
Covers and Gear yeah i think i want one too, i had to upgrade the pickups and tuners on my 256 but this has it all sorted.
Barracuda007 you definitely feel like you're playing a more expensive guitar with the 401 however i'll still happily use the 256 for a tour :)
Barracuda007 do they sound like a les paul?
Love Michael Casswell. RIP
I have one of these that looks exactly like the one Michael is playing. It's a good guitar and the price on sale was $499.00.
Glad I just picked up the Gold Top version of this one.
Nice guitar and all...but I think a large part of why it sounds great is because of the player ;)
yeah, the guitar has no sustain man
@@marino4691 Guitar is great it's the pickups, weak output plus he's only got a tiny amount of gain on the amp. Rip those out and put at least a JB or a distortion in the bridge(or actives) and it would be like night and day
@@AdamYoudell It's not intended to be a high-gain guitar, the pickups are based on a 50s era Les Paul. Early Les Paul's had low-output pickups, hence the "vintage" description for low output pickups. Les Pauls generally aren't built with high-gain metal in mind. It's all about great, smooth tone.
Adam Youdell - If you are looking for more output pickups, you should hey another guitar. This is for the pleasant sound of the 50's Les Paul and the most classic sound. The 36th Dimarzio set is just amazing for this kind of tone.
I had this guitar before I traded in/up to put towards an ESP eclipse. Great guitar though especially for the money. I enjoyed it more than the ltd ec1000. Loved the DiMarzio pick ups.
Mark America u liked the401 more ? Impressive ! I’m about to buy one can u tell me why thx
I like my Ec-401v with DiMarzio pups better than the ec-1000 with Duncan’s and a Koa top. 1000 was Korean and 401 is Chinese but both have the same excellent QC! Just like the darker dirty sounds of the 401. The 1000 was to bright and snappy but could have been the Koa top?
RIP Michael
Prefer seymour duncans sounds more modern, this DiMarzios sounds more vintage. But still this guitars are great.
Depends on the Duncans you want. These are Larry's take on the original PAF, and should sound vintage. The original was a very clean sounding pick up, that was capable of single coil like sounds. Seymour offer's his own take on the original PAF as well. IMO, these are a faithful interpretation of the original.
If you want vintage sounding S.Duncans, check out the ''Pearly Gates''(that's what Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top uses),''Whole Lotta Humbucker''(designed to get the J.Page tone) and the ''Alnico Pro II'' which Slash is using. Also the JB/'59 combo can get great Blues & Classic Rock tones. All of these are essentially PAF style humbuckers with Alnico magnets.
I have the ec1000 asb with a pair of seymours (JB AND 59) and love it.
I do have my eye on a 401 if I can get a used korean built one with seymours or di marzios.
RIP! Grrrreat player!
Your boi can play...........!!
Great review!
Hey guys
I am in between two guitars: this one and the ec 401 with emg's. I mostly play metal and hard rock, but this one in the video is so awesome, i've tried ln a store. I want cleans to be good, to.
Get one without emg's trust me
Zack Ramsey well, thanks.
Arthur Martins get a 401 and switch pickups to passive ones
Nah EMGS are garbage the dimarzios in this video are the same ones in my ltd and they sound infinitely better then EMGS
I got a 401 with emgs, i keep going back to gibson with passives. 401 will prob go, not going to bother trying changing to passive.
So probably a fair some lighter than a LP which kills my back!
Nah, still very hefty. Full thickness and all.
Amps used?
He should know what he is reviewing.
Spartanjp308 Right.. it's an EC401vf. There is no such thing as an EC40
Play power chords not a solo.Solo sounds different and will not show a full sound of any guitar. We know you are good but point is to show full, distorted sound mate.
Why not just go to a guitar shop and try one out then? Also. He did play power cords.
Tomasz, your analogy is actually wrong
mine was made in china? is it original?
They moved manufacturing to China.
I was wondering the same thing, ive had my gold top for about 6 years and just now looked into it lol
