A Fender Bass with no pick guard ! What a nice clean look!
This is just duff old bass on red, im sold.
Wonder if they've sent him one of these. He'd look great playin em
There's differences in necks and electronics
Yep ...I saw it in the Fender catalogue and thought of what Duff’s white bass and then came straight to this page
I got the 84-87 hot pick one back from years ago my friends had & needed to replace pick ups, knobs, 2 new pots, fix the stripped neck screws and more but it’s a legend. I love it.
I had a 1987 Fender Bass like that but in Charcoal Grey. Sold it 7 years ago. Wish I kept it.
Fender’s been releasing some real oddballs lately. I really like these!
2 years later! I’ve been using mine for the last 6 months instead of my vintage 77..Ric 4001. I can tell you it is an awesome bass and it’s very light, it took me a while to get used to the narrower neck. Great bass and the build quality is superb as you would expect from the master builders at Fender Japan. Get one S/H if y can, y won’t be disappointed.🇬🇧🏴
Holy mother of pearl! I was about to plunk down for a Player P Bass but after seeing this I may do the Boxer series to go with my MIJ Fender Aerodyne Jazz bass. I play a lot of blues, R&B etc. I usually play with my tone about 4/10. Thanks for the demo!
@@justinkinney1225 No I got a G&L CLF L-2000 instead
These guys ain’t kiddin about the pro setup! My American Pro II Jazz just showed up yesterday and I could not be more pleased. Thank you guys for the great content as well as the amazing service and beautiful bass!
Thanks for you business Zach!
Finally! A review of this new release of the Boxer Precision Bass. Thank You
The kind of bass that kinda gives you the Duff Mckagan vibe without hurting your wallet, this is just another awesome releases from Fender, thanks for the review Empire Music, always been curious about this bass 😊
it’s the same price as the duff signature model
@@momkisser3553 Brand new I agree with you. But I got lucky.. I found and just ordered a used one in mint condition for under $900. I dont think I could've found a used Duff at that same price point (and I own one).
This bass is $1199 duff’s is $1349
I just had a dejavu, when I saw fender is producing this bass again. I got a 1986 Jazz Bass Special MIJ, and now you can buy theese things right from the factory lol... so hope they will make a new series of the Precision Bass Lyte MIJ
As a Peavey player who loves 12" radius, this looks like a great alternative.
I’ve played over a 1,000 gigs with the tone control rolled off on both my p and j basses with flat wounds on both. With the jazz bass I take it one step further and only play the neck pick up. My tone has never been referred to as muddy but instead as warm and filling by numerous sound engineers. I don’t want to heard, I want to be felt.
You understand what playing bass is about!
This is a beautiful bass. Fender, please send some to Australia. Great review too, and thank you for comprehensively covering the tone and features of this awesome bass.
what happened to the Hot Pink bass?
I wish the boxer came in an all black with the black back of the neck like the duff mckagen. Good explanation of the volume control. I wonder how many people got this bass and thought it was defective.
Black ones can be found on reverb, well the ones from the 80s anyway, but I’m sure the specs are identical. I have a pewter grey one which is pre jazz bass special, it says (PJ)
@@bodiesbyben pewter grey, that would look hella mega good!!
The jazz special from the 80"s are getting harder to find especially in Black 27 years later they're pretty beat-up
I just found the pb555 in mint condition with bag,, tags, and Japanese papers, and all black on Reverb.
This is a fender jazz bass special reissue the Duff Mckagan Guns n Roses bass fantastic about time
Excellent review!
And answering the question about the tone, I use 0% only during studies...!
Greetings from Brazil!
I have a MIJ (1991) PJBass, and I love to use just the bridge pick up with the tone rolled right off. Try it, picking near the bridge.
Just ordered mine in Torino red. Can't wait
You digging it?
G’day folks! I love the tone off sound, sometimes it’s really good in a mix for fat sound
Anthony you seem like a really cool guy! I prefer watching your videos when I'm looking into certain basses.
Sounds great ands great review, as always. Other than the Drop-D tuner, stacked J pick up, how different is this from the Duff McKagan bass? Is the TBX the same as on Duff's bass? Would love to see a comparison, both great basses, hard to choose. Leaning towards the Duff for the Drop D option.
Both are great. The Duff has the Drop D, a Duncan Jazz Pickup, Black Hardware, and the high gloss neck. They sound similar, but I think the Duff isn't quite as aggressive as the Boxer. You can't go wrong either way, and it's totally a personal thing. Thanks for watching - Anthony
Saw it in the Fender catalogue.....I straightaway thought of Duff McKagen
Yes!! Very similar! Thanks for watching - Anthony
I use the sound with the tone all the way off! It's the right sound for Motown.
right! or like some kind of old beatles stuff with a foam mute
These are a remake of the old Jazz Bass Special model.
Nice way to start an afternoon with Anthony and a neat instrument. Nice demo and good with the specs. And what switches were being used when. Thanks
Thanks for sharing, it's look like To my fender precision bass lyte made in japan from 1986/1987, I played with more than 500 gigs...
but very interesting config.
best wishes and happy new year.
S.V
Ant, those were some tasty harmonics, brother!
I'm not a bass player but Im afraid I gotta get one of these... don't think I've ever lusted after a bass this badly
Did you end up getting one?
@@goosegaskins no, but I did end up getting a 1985-86 Boxer Series P Bass. Pewter finish, all black neck. Love it!
@@jackmalcic2949 Nice, congrats!
I've played the original. Excellent tones.
I had that hot pink bass. Fender called it lipstick red. Fender jazz bass special plus.
I loved the sound of that bass!! Thanks for watching - Anthony
Another outstanding review. Thanks, Ant!
What do you think of the electronics in this bass? I have read about the build quality of the MIJ basses, but that the electronics of these might not be as stellar. It sure sounds fantastic on your video!
Very cool!! Awesome demo!!
Just picked this up- the MIJ sold me, not sure why.
They’re marketing this for ‘High Performance Players’ not exactly sure what that means, I’m using it to learn bass.
And the badge says Jazz Bass, confusing since this is more of a P bass, right?
Thanks for the awesome video.
I'll play my tone down to zero on an intro or odd muddy sound. It's usable when you wanna through it in a bag of tricks.
Tone all the way off, with 8 years old Thomastik flats on my baby. Any problem with it? 😅
I've been seeing a lot about these boxers, they look like an Mb 4,which I like a lot, might have to try one a these out next time I'm in Empires 'hood",lol (it f I can stay out of the custom shop room that is!)AND YES ANTHONY ,I PLAY MY BASS WITH THE TONE OFF ,WHEN IM LEARNING A NEW SONG,I TURN THE TONE OFF SO I CAN HEAR THE ORIGINAL BASS LINE ,WITHOUT MY BASS BLENDING IN TOO MUCH,I also turn the tone down on my basses that I use DR High Beams strings on,I'm sure you know about them🙄😁
thanks you very mutch for this review , jerome from france
wow, i didnt even know they still make these...werent they popular in like the 80s?
This sounds really tough
I'm interested to know how the TBX pot is wired. Are the volume pots before the TBX or after? Will the slight tone roll off of the volume knobs being dropped a bit affect the TBX?
IIRC it should be wired exactly the same as a standard tone pot, all the differences are internal.
Funny, but is the bridge pick up in the 70's position?
It is! Apologies if I failed to mention that in the vid. Thanks for watching - Anthony
Hi, Anthony! I'm curious if you played the bass using an Amp or a preamp pedal or recorded direct. I just bought my Boxer, I use Elixir strings in it and it doesn't sound exactly like yours.
Hi , i don't know if buy the fender boxer or the Fender american performer..
Yes I often play with tone all the way down 😅
I have this exact bass it sounds best with it all the way on
Look and tone reminds me of Ibanez roadStar basses.
Anthony you didn’t use your two favorite sayings “bloom” and “harmonic content”. But you know what, those can only used for pro series or particularly custom shop.
Great demo! Incidentally, is the J pickup in the 70's position, or 'standard' 60's position? And is it the same position as the Duff McKagan bass?
Thanks in advance!
Jazz PuP is in 70's position. Quite trebly.
nice bass
question, can you control the volume of each pick up individually when both are engaged?
Yup
So it’s a reissue of the Jazz Special. It’s what Duff plays except his are white and cost more.
This or charvel pj? Thanks
Great review
Any NOS Baja telecaster.
I always play my bass with the tone all the way off, but my bass was a 77 p so 🤷🏻♂️ ymmv
Anthony what amp do u play thru?
I really like the clean look without the pick guard and it sounds great. Don’t like the color options and it is about double the price I was expecting to see. If I am going to spend $1200 bucks on a bass it isn’t going to have the name Fender on it.
I would maybe agree with you if it was MIM not MIJ like it is. Big difference
Is this an active bass?
No, it’s passive.
Is it me or are these just like the first edition Duff McKagan signature model based on his 80’s “Jazz Deluxe” that was really a P bass w/ a Jazz neck... ;-)
Its not a Jazz Deluxe, its Jazz Bass Special. It was called that cause of the jazz bass neck on it
@@ionehkontehdiabo7627 that’s right! Jazz Bass Special, my bad! 👍
I typically play on a 10 year old DR black beauties strings and tone at zero.
I had a look at some pics of those basses around the web and it looks like they have the hole for micro-tilt adjustment on the neck plate, is that true?
Yes there is a micro tilt. Just Don't overnighten it!
what difference makes the switch for pickups, if they already have a volume knob for each pickup?
If there was black i would already have gotten one i think
Definitely divisive colors... but really awesome basses. We'll throw in a can of spray paint with your purchase lol!! Thanks for watching - Anthony
@@EmpireMusicPgh 🤣
I wanted to like it but it has a j neck instead of a p bass neck. That is a huge deal breaker for me, i hate how skinny a j neck is because it leaves me with not enough room to move around
So... Duff McKagan bass
I like how they chose to go without the painted back of the neck though.
@@zachmetcalf556 true!
The nut width on these is a jazz width of 1.5 inches whereas the Duff signature has a modern precision nut width of 1.625. Very similar though.
I know right!! Even though Duff has 2 signature basses, this feels a little bit more reminiscing of him.
On red
Unfortunately we cant see clearly the buttons ...too much annotations aroûnd, name, fonction, advertisement ...same as u look 📺 tv ....😞😞
I typed in empiremusic.CAWM. Nothing happened. Wassup with that?
Nasty green or too loud red..... wish they came in plain old black.
Torino Red and Sherwood Green Metallic were original Boxer colors, so I guess blame the 80s. I agree with you Fender's biggest drawback is always the extremely limited color options. They'll sell you a 2000 dollar jazz bass but only offer 3 colors, one of which is always 3TSB.
@@MPeaches1958 one of the Duff McKagan's is rear-routed and comes in white. Same thing as this but it's made in mexico. I'd rather have MIJ for the same price.
Its strange that my fender pbass plus (boner) sound exactly like these boxer series
It's fender jazz special, not Precision but ok :)
Yeah confusing signals for sure. Fender catalog calls it Boxer Precision Bass, headstock says Fender Jazz Special, neck says jazz, body screams precision, both pickup choices, I give up!!
@@cubistguitar hahahahaha 🤣
Boy would of love one of these but a big fat pass now that I learned its basswood.
It sucks, I absolutely love the way these bass’ sound but I can’t stand either of the finishes
They're not for everybody looks-wise. They are fun to play though! Thanks for watching - Anthony
@@EmpireMusicPgh Yeah I’m considering dropping the pickups into a warming body, I think I could make it look awesome with some flame maple
