Ooooooh. So thats why the Thomas and friends had the words "Shunting Tracks!" It all makes sense now. They're Shunting to a different track!
Wow. I have watched that show soo much since I was little and my long lasting question has been answered.
Thankyou for showing me the way of Shunting.

I was just at Berwick station today and thinking about your video with the shunt and redock process you showed when Comengs were back running on the line a month and a half ago. Crazy how coincidental that is.

Ahhhh forgot I took that. Would have been a suitable clip for the video to show the whole process! Freaky too it came to mind

@@StrayaTrains I was wondering why you didn't put it in the video. So that's why. Yeah, shame. But nothing to be done now. Still a good video as always though.

The recent Steamrail run had some interesting shunting at glen Waverley when an engine's breaks had an issue.

Mordialloc used to have an extra track that ran through the car park and past the water tower and using a set of wooden gates hardly used. One day in the late ‘70s there was a shunters strike and country carsets were stabled in various sidings around Melbourne. In Mordialloc there were 3 cars stored on this car park track, the cars were an AS, BS and a wooden carriage. Around this time there were various bricquette sidings which were shunted by an E class and one time an L class. Usually the consist was 1 to 3 GYs and a ZL van.
One day a down train struck a car at Mentone and stayed there all afternoon. The following trains with passengers were shunted onto the up line at Cheltenham and ran at low speed to Mordialloc which I understand was called “wrong line working”. This procedure used a pilotman which is a person with a piece of paper who acted like a staff and no trains can proceed without him. Those were the days where signal boxes at Cheltenham and Mordialloc were manned and a wrong line order could be issued. Next to impossible these days.
Another unusual event occurred at Mordialloc on the second last down train. There was night bridge works where the wooden trestle bridge over Mordialloc Creek was being replaced by a new bridge. There were no more down trains around 11pm so the overhead was switched off on the up track only.
However they forgot about the practice at the time where down trains would cross over to the up platform so only one platform was used late at night, the overhead had been cut off and the train coasted to a stop on the up platform with no lights. The passengers exited and those continuing to Frankston had to walk to the down platform where the last down train arrived as normal. Presumably the stalled train had to wait all night until the overhead was turned on in the morning.

Interesting stuff. Is the term dock perhaps a Victorian railways term? 🤔 Shunting is obvious common railway terminology but I’ve never heard of dock in this context (more in relation to railways that go to loading and shipping docks) and Google didn’t really find anything either. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_rail_transport_terms

I'm visiting Melbourne in a couple of days (I live in the UK, but I'm visiting family in QLD and I've wanted to see Melbourne's transport system for a few years now), and I was wondering if there are any specific things/places you'd recommend? Mainly for transport spotting, but anything really.
I'm only there for a couple of days, but I'm hoping to see as much as I can!
