The Yankee Marshall is a big revolver fan also 357 sig, because mimics 357 magnum. Now a days people are being invaded by multiple attackers, so having that extra capacity is becoming more important, than say 5 years ago. With defund the police, entitlement culture, low or no bond, drug addiction and gang violence the bad guys are chipping away, so I have changed my opinion on semi-autos and feel 357 sig or 10mm is the way to go. I will still hang on to some of my revolvers.
I have always heard people say, carry auto then a J-frame for a backup. I was always like, why not carry a magnum revolver, then like a Sig 365 for backup lol. Makes more sense to me.
I wish that the 357 Sig and the 327 Magnum had taken off, but I haven’t seen a box of 357 Sig on a store shelf in 4 or 5 years, and I’ve never seen a box of 327 Magnum on a store shelf. I believe that 30 Super Carry will play out in the same way. I really wish that 327 Magnum had taken off in order to have 6 shot J frames as commonplace.
I feel for you. Back pain can everything you do, even breathing. Been there, had that. An overlooked part is how exceedingly difficult back pain can make concentrating on anything, like say editing videos, train comments. I wish you a quick and smooth recovery. Just in case you felt the need to do more videos, you could do some of your speaking videos from your office in a comfortable/supportive chair. You know, like your low recoil options other than 22lr, or maybe one on tips for reloading, & how to start. You could do histories/benefits on particular calibers, whatever tickled you fancy. That is, unless it causes you pain or slows your recovery or the pain makes it a struggle to concentrate, or you just don't feel like it. In the meantime, we can always rewatch your older videos we haven't seen for a while. I feel safe saying that I speak for others when I say that we just want you healthy again.
Thanks. I am pretty much in a nerve situation where movement hurts and or causes my legs to collapse. Other than moving and standing up to get to a walker, i'm not really in any serious pain.
Underwood is THE manufacturer for .357SIG period. All other ammo brands and even ironically SIG itself is loading this cartridge about 100FPS under original spec for this round's design. Same goes for 10mm I've heard. Folks who are fed up with the "wussified" version of 10mm are usually devoted to Underwood.
Absolutely loved your video. Even though I'm a 357 fanboy, is there any way that you could do the same test with shorter barrels more practical carry concealed.
If the 357sig ever becomes more popular and there starts to be more ammo available, id definitely switch to it. It is my favorite round, there just isnt enough ammo or ammo types available. 357sig is an amazing round, at least for pistols.
This is the first video out of 4 that I watched that the .357 Sig had more muzzle velocity. I'm also surprised the wound channel isn't bigger for the .357 Mag.
Being a 1911 fan one of mine is the SIG NIGHTMARE CARRY A 1911 COMMANDER STYLE pistol in .357 SIG a very reliable, powerful and accurate weapon. Prior to that I had a GLOCK 32 .357 SIG, just favor the 1911 platform.
I come from a family that is all anti-gun. It was up to me when I came of age to be the gun guy. The one that took on the responsibility to take on an intruder or any kind of an emergency situation. The first weapon that I chose was a 12 gauge pump shotgun. Second weapon was a handgun. Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum 4 inch barrel, Pachmayr grips. Over the many years I have shot and collected all kinds of guns. Nonetheless for me my two favorite weapons are still my two original purchases. I feel most comfortable with those 2 to get the job done. My family still doesn't understand why I need all these guns and ammunition. I sleep well at night and carry in many area's.
FYI RE: test fire an emply case in your 357 with only a primer Hornady said it may back the primer out & lock it up . If that should happen , put a wood rod down the barrel & push the case back like it would had it fired . Might have to give it a light tap . They said when a round is fired the first thing that happens is the primer backs out , as pressure builds , the case moves back to reseat the primer & push the bullet out .
I’d say both are wickedly effective. I’ve owned several .357 revolvers and loved them all. Never owned a .357 Sig, but dang, can’t say it isn’t equally effective. I’d feel warm & fuzzy with either. Great video, thanks! 👍
I carried a revolver for the first 20 yrs of my 30 yr career & had to reload my .38 under fire in one instance. I was in full support of our switch to Glocks b/c of increased ammo capacity. In retirement I carry a J Frame with one speed-strip reload b/c my days of gunfights are hopefully long gone.
Impressive comparison. I've been a .357 Mag guy for a number of years, but the .357 Sig just never really appealed to me. But, I'm older and perhaps a little more open minded than I used to be. Sorry to hear about your back. Hope you get better soon.
357 sig is a beast of a cartridge. I’ve got two Glock 23s. One dedicated 40 and the other I change barrels from 9 to 357 sig. I wish it were more popular so the ammo is cheaper and more readily available.
Hope you get better. I'm a 45 guy but really like the 400 Corbon cartridges. Yet as with the 357 Sig it's a bottle neck. Where it fails is BULLET SETBACK! I carried 400 Corbon for many years and I have at least 100 rounds that were chambered with SETBACK. It does not matter what brand either. My friend still carries 357 Sig and he has plenty of rounds SETBACK also. (I would attach a photo with this comment but don't think can.) After all thats said and done personally I'm sticking with my 45acp as a carry round. Buffalo Bore, Corbon and Underwood all make excellent +P hollow point cartridges for it. I favor Buffalo Bore because it loads thec230g with XTP's. Regular Remington or Winchester Hollow point will do most any job needed. My gun is accurate with both. EXCELLENT EXCELLENT VIDEO..
My 4” FN FNH 40 with the EFK dragon 357 Sig barrel is my “truck pistol” plenty of barrier penetration, flat shooting, as you said less recoil by far than 357 magnum. It’s definitely a show stopper! 👍🏻😏
Thank you for validating my decision to go 357Sig instead of 10mm. I don't have anything as hot as those Underwood rounds. All I have is some V-Crowns rated at 1356fps. All I hafta to do is swap barrels in my P320. Its mostly for the deer lease now that I have a couple of micro 9s and a few more revolvers in the bull pen. I'm anxious to know the status of your 856 before I trust mine to carry.
I've got 2 different 357 sigs and my only criticisms would be muzzle flash and muzzle blast. In a night time home defense situation these could be issues unless you train for them.
Nice comparison. I shoot 9x23 Winchester, which has the same ballistics as the 357 Sig in factory ammo, but can pull away from it at the top end with proper handloads. Like you say, recoil feels closer to a 9mm than a 357 mag. The trouble is finding both pistols and ammo in this cartridge!
Thanks for this impressive demo, Sam. I don't have a 357 Sig but my first handgun was a Colt Trooper 357 Magnum with a 6" barrel. I eventually let it get away but have since acquired a Taurus 627 Trapper with a 4" barrel. The Trapper is set up making recoil not too bad.
Relatively new (several months) as an active CCW guy here! I carry my Sig P365, but would consider my Glock 27... even a Glock 23! I already have the 4" 9mm conversion barrel, but it seems that the 357 sig conversion barrel is even a better fit for the Glock 40 cals! If I see ammo availability in Sig 357, I will certainly get the conversion barrel!
revolvers just have so much variety options. you can do specials, wadcutters, wide flat nose 180gr, roundball with just a primer if you need a slingshot. but thats pretty much all manually operated firearms theres alot you can do.
You make awesome videos , very informational Content you have Sir, but I what i will say is that I have many underwood loads , for quite a few cartridges, but im so happy your doing .357 SIG, now that you have that conversion barrel. Good job man. .40sw and 10mm from underwood have some crazy stuff too, which I’m sure you know. ✌🏽
Thanks. Underwood makes the hottest semi auto rounds at a good price. Buffalo Bore's are about as good, but Buffalo Bore cost twice the price and are unspecific about which actual projectile they use. Underwood lacks on revolver cartridges though, Buffalo Bore's are just hotter, crimped better and exactly the velocity they state. I will often do comparisons between an Underwood auto and BB revolver round to be as fair as possible.
I EDC a Glock 32 and I also use it for hunting and I've compared 357 SIG and 9mm +p+ on hogs with similar projectiles and 357 SIG is wayyyy more effective even using the 9mm in a carbine the 357 SIG is better in my testing.
All depends on what you want. The 10mm has higher velocity ratings for similar sized projectiles. A more powerful cartridge no matter how you slice it. The real benefit of the 10mm is that is supports bullet weights up to 220 grains that are good for two and four legged defense.

Sorry about your back. I have herniated discs, so I literally feel your pain.... I'm a big fan of the revolver round, but I really like the .40 and I'm interested to see how it compares to the Sig round. Looking forward to more videos!
As anecdotal evidence of the 9mm ineffectiveness, even with new technology projectiles, I've noticed lately the average offender seems to have to be riddled with 9mm to cause cessation of violent behavior. That's not to say it doesn't work, it does, but it seems to take more hits to bring them down. I realize in multiofficer shootings, if one shoots, they all shoot. I'm also going to guess most if not a shootings involve 9mm. Didnt used to see so many rounds expended when 40 Smith or 357 Sig was used. Can't confirm my observations but it just seems the 40 or e57 Sig effected more 1-4 round stops. Not dissing the 9mm ler seay. I carry a Sig 365 in warm weather as my EDC, mostly because its easier to conceal. When jacket or coat weather prevails, its back to my Glock 23 with HST's for me.Withbit I feel well strapped. Considering using it with a 357 Sig barrel as well. The 357 Sig is a proven performer, as is the 40 Smith.
Update: Speers new "LE" loading, number 54234, is a 6 petal bullet, doing about 1440 fps out of a 4" bbl rivaling the Underwood loading. I just got this current production, 3-15-23. It's good they finally reached the bar for what the cartridge should have been and was designed for. I would really appreciate it if you would test it along side the current production Speer 357 mag. 4" and 4", or apples to apples. In the past, the Speer factory loading has been 100 fps slower. I've got no gel blocks so can't do it myself. Thanks for all your great videos.
Sporting bullet is made of soft lead but not to expand massive for penetration on game at longer distance while still getting some expansion.Recoil spring absorbs alot of shock.Comparison was good as the goal of the Sig was to repro a 357 mag at that velocity you chronoed.
Hi Sam, I hope you feel better soon. I suffered from 2 herniated disc in my younger days. I can see you are a great shot and watching this video reinforces my belief that revolvers are so much more accurate than auto loaders. Good comparison as well. I have always felt it a shame that the 357 SIG failed to catch on with the law enforcement community. With the 10 state police/Highway Patrol agencies that went to it years ago loved the cartridge and showed to be a great man stopper. But the reasons they all are going back to the 9 mm is because the 357 SIG bullets cost a lot more and, even though the 357 SIG does not have the recoil of a magnum a lot of officers still were having trouble shooting it. With all the WOKE stuff going on I believe one day you will have the FBI come out and say they are going to the .22 caliber so their agents won't complain about their wrists hurting.
Just want to clarify that nothing in the video confirms that revolvers are more accurate. Most people shoot semi autos better because of lack of recoil and the endless supply of aftermarket sights. In this video he shoots the revolver better because it's the main gun he shoots and the sig is newer to him
@@cainhager9814 Every firearms instructor I new in my LE career always said that a revolver is inherently more accurate than an auto loader because a revolver has a more natural point of aim with the human hand. I was always able to shoot a tighter group with Model 66 357 than I could with my SIG 229 or 220, one a 45 and the other a 40.
It depends. Alot of people just really like the organic, comfortable feeling of revolver grips. Some other people just can't get used to the double action trigger. Depends on what you prefer
This was an interesting comparison. Most comparisons try to use bullet weights as close to the same as they can get which is fine but I would like to see comparisons using the optimum bullet weight for the firearm. For instance I believe the 125 grain bullet is light for the .357 mag. I've loaded and fired thousands of .357 ammo with both rifle and handgun and out of different length barrels. The .357 mag. gives better ballistics with heavier bullets. By that I don't mean just velocity. I prefer 140 grain bullets from my .357 rifle and 140 to 158 grain from my handguns depending on barrel length. This was a great video, thank you for doing it.
357 sig rules trust my life on nothing else, get yourself the 125 grain bonded 357 sig bullet from underwood and carry it your all set, the real world gun stats on 357 sig are incredible. Just remember you need a bonded bullet to handle the power, underwood makes one and so does double tap or get a solid copper bullet.
These tests make me miss the bologna packs. I used to laugh so hard when Sam would get slapped with the meat 🍖. Glad no injuries but man always good for a laugh
Nice test. Looks like they did an awesome job of mimicking 357 Magnum 125gr ballistics with that particular loading. Hard to argue against 16 “Magnum” rounds with no reload. You did shoot the 686 better so that is worth mentioning. Good test. I personally may would lean towards a 40 Caliber anyway because the price of ammunition is typically cheaper and easier to find, but 357 SIG is probably the best overall auto loader caliber.
Thanks. I like .40 and .357 Sig. The .40 is more of a scaled down/up in a sense .45 auto, .357 Sig is like a magnum. So it's pretty cool how vastly different bullet weights can be between .40 and .357 Sig, 115 gr .357 or 200 gr .40's, so there's some versatility in there.
Are you trying to resurect the 357 SIG from near death? Funny, it does just what it was designed to do. It would be interesting to see it with the same bullet construction, but I understand that's probably not going to happen. Enjoyed your video, as always.
Man, just as I'm thinking about adopting 357 Sig into my collection, a bunch of UA-camrs are releasing videos on it. I swear this happens every time! Now if only I could find a 40 cal browning hi-power to convert to 357 Sig.
The 357 Sig is moving faster than I anticipated. I have often wondered if 9mm +p+ was close to the Sig round , I’d love to see that comparison after you mend up if you can find some +p+ .
THIS Underwood Sig loading IS particularly fast. , while Undewood .357 Magnum is respectability within the mainstream loads from the Revolver Era . ( Different ammo mfgs , different lot numbers , different revolvers , etc could vary from upper 13's to almost 1500. Back in the original heyday of .357 Sig ( mid '90s ) mainstream .357 Sig Duty/ Defensive 125gr was typically 1300- 1350 , * From typical LE Duty Guns of the era , with bbl lengths of +/- 4 to +/- 4.5 inches * . ( I totally get Sam's reasoning of similar bullet travel distance to muzzle . But if you were to compare actual LE Duty Guns / " full size - ish * defensive belt pistols , the historical comparison would be 4 inch Revolver vs 4 inch Semiauto . Heck that was one of the secondary talking point in favor of the Bottomfeeders back when the Great Changeover was still controversial , and being debated . To Wit - A Semiauto of Same Barell Length was more compact than the Revolver . To LE Administrators , that was a big plus ! . Lots of plainclothes / off duty officers could use same pistol for detectives and off duty instead of a dichotomy of back and forth between 4 in medium frame & 2 in small frame .)
Sorry to hear of your accident and I hope it heals quickly. I really enjoy your videos; they're informative and somehow relaxing at the same time. I have a question for those reading here. I've had a SIG P-250 for years, one with only the 9mm barrel. I believe the company manufactured a . 357 barrel for the pistol and that changeover involved only the barrel and the magazine. Am I right about this and are those conversions still available? Has any reader experience with this and, if so, how did it work out for you?
I have a SIG P226 with a 357 Sig barrel and 40 S&W. I bought it used so I don't know if a barrel was added or if it came that way. I bought a conversion kit from SIG for 9mm. But it wasn't just the barrel. It was slide, barrel and mags. I expect you would need to look into that as opposed to just a barrel swap like you can do with the 40/357. Of course you can't use 9mm mags either but again 40/357 mags are one and the same. In fact mine were marked with both on them.
very good video as always! and as usual i will say that even though there are inherent positives and negatives with any cartridge, so much depends on how the manufacturer chooses to load them. few and far between are 357s rounds that are not close to max, and it is designed for shorter auto barrels which why it is such a great round. the great 357m was designed for longer barrels but still has done very well in shorter carry lengths. as for the 40 ... (my conspiracy theory) the ammo manufacturers were paid off to sabotage it to revive the 9
If you could get access to one you could try a direct comparison between 357 revolver and a 357 Coonan 1911 shooting the same ammo. Might be an interesting comparison.
How come the 357 Sig is not more popular?? There’s not many firearms chambered in 357 and the rounds are hard to find!! I have been looking for a P320 in 357 Sig and the only place to find it is the Sig wed site!

@@grahamohea2424 good to know because I have gen 3 G23s...and just ordered factory oem barrels for G32 from Glock...waiting 👍
So awesome you are doing the sig round now. I just need a .357 barrel now
The Yankee Marshall is a big revolver fan also 357 sig, because mimics 357 magnum.
@@GunSam thinking the same way. 👍👍
If you’re at home and you’re being invaded by a group you need to be reaching for your AR/AK not a pistol.
If the bad guys are still coming after your initial counter with a 357 mag you’ve got bigger problems than one gun can solve.
@@GunSamOr be like Tackleberry from police academy and have multiples ha ha.
I love Underwood. It’s one of the few companies that print the actual velocities of their ammo. Great stuff.
Love revolvers too. But you're right, so refreshing to see a fair, no biased review!
My Two Favorite calibers... I have a strong feeling that 357 Sig will be Popular, it's an all around bullet.
Pro channel that deserves way, way more views.
Love both but the difference is you can get a gorgeous single action revolver in 357 magnum with a 6.5 inch barrel
Excellent information, properly sequenced and presented, Thank you, Sir......
Thank you
Underwood is THE manufacturer for .357SIG period. All other ammo brands and even ironically SIG itself is loading this cartridge about 100FPS under original spec for this round's design. Same goes for 10mm I've heard. Folks who are fed up with the "wussified" version of 10mm are usually devoted to Underwood.
Thanks again. I'm really looking forward to a 357sig.!!
Fantastic presentation comparison video bro. clearest gel in U.S
This is the first video out of 4 that I watched that the .357 Sig had more muzzle velocity. I'm also surprised the wound channel isn't bigger for the .357 Mag.
Great video now I hope to see evidence of other 357 Sig ammunition with comparison with other 357 magnum and 10mm ammunition
The Sig round..love it. Alaska carry. Taken bears ,deer, etc. 👍👍😎🇺🇲
Thanks. Now I want a 357sig again...
That's pretty interesting. One of my carry guns is a ,357Magnum revolver, to I really appreciate these tests. I'll look for the Underwood 125 JHP.
I love 357sig. I've converted a M17 to the caliber. It's flat shooting with minimal recoil. I've thought about making a short barreled version.
Thank you. Nobody believes me on how a 357 sig is comparable and with less recoil. The 357 sig gets no respect.
I love your tests, please keep them coming!!!
I knew you'd be impressed with 357 Sig. I've been running it in my Beretta 96a1 for 3 yrs now. Even have a barrel for my Bond Arms Derringer. BOOM!!!
The SIG was designed to do what it does. The magnum arrives at it place with case capacity
I have shot primers & never had a lock up , it was a long time ago & sounded like a fire cracker , it may have been an auto ???? or a rifle ???
I’d say both are wickedly effective. I’ve owned several .357 revolvers and loved them all. Never owned a .357 Sig, but dang, can’t say it isn’t equally effective. I’d feel warm & fuzzy with either. Great video, thanks! 👍
I carried a revolver for the first 20 yrs of my 30 yr career & had to reload my .38 under fire in one instance. I was in full support of our switch to Glocks b/c of increased ammo capacity. In retirement I carry a J Frame with one speed-strip reload b/c my days of gunfights are hopefully long gone.
Too old to roll around lol. I could see you standing and aiming, if he hits he hits, if he misses I won't.
@@GunSam Yup, I’m 75 and way too old for rolling around & fighting anybody.
When you shot the steel target, the marks on the target from the Mag. look a lot bigger and harder than the marks from the Sig.
My 4” FN FNH 40 with the EFK dragon 357 Sig barrel is my “truck pistol” plenty of barrier penetration, flat shooting, as you said less recoil by far than 357 magnum. It’s definitely a show stopper! 👍🏻😏
We love 357 anything i think
Just bought a batch of this from Und e.r wood. Looks like I made a good choice.
Thank you Sam!
Take care of yourself and don't worry about posting, we can wait if we have to.
That guy used a .357 sig when he shot that dude that tried to shoot up that church. It dropped him very quickly!!!

Sorry to hear about your condition, Sam. Take all the time you need to recover. Health and happiness should always come first.
revolvers just have so much variety options. you can do specials, wadcutters, wide flat nose 180gr, roundball with just a primer if you need a slingshot. but thats pretty much all manually operated firearms theres alot you can do.
Heal up Sam, we'll be here when you get to feeling better.
Outtakes were awesome!
I EDC a Glock 32 and I also use it for hunting and I've compared 357 SIG and 9mm +p+ on hogs with similar projectiles and 357 SIG is wayyyy more effective even using the 9mm in a carbine the 357 SIG is better in my testing.
Better than a 9mm carbine in which way?
Very informative. Great video
I’ve always wanted a 10mm but honestly with the variety of great ammo choices in .357 Sig I honestly just don’t need a 10mm...
The 10mm is an easier cartridge to handload for and is better suited to lead bullet loads. But with factory ammo I agree with you.
The 10mm is an easier cartridge to handload for and is better suited to lead bullet loads. But with factory ammo I agree with you.
@@Walter-wo5sz Reloading 357 SIG is not hard. Both are easy to reload and both can use lead bullets.
All depends on what you want. The 10mm has higher velocity ratings for similar sized projectiles. A more powerful cartridge no matter how you slice it. The real benefit of the 10mm is that is supports bullet weights up to 220 grains that are good for two and four legged defense.
It is fading into oblivion as someone else commented.
Vindication for my Glock 32 purchase in 357 Sig.

Sorry about your back. I have herniated discs, so I literally feel your pain.... I'm a big fan of the revolver round, but I really like the .40 and I'm interested to see how it compares to the Sig round. Looking forward to more videos!
Another great show my friend. I have really been looking forward to this test. Get well soon my friend.
excellent analysis sir.
Hope you get well soon and thanks for all you do!
I am impressed. I have a conversion barrel for my M&P. Ammo is tough to find & get. It is expensive.
Hmm. Now I really want the 357sig conversion
Impressive results.
Glock 23 = Three calibers.
9mm/40/.357
Gotta love it.❤️
Sporting bullet is made of soft lead but not to expand massive for penetration on game at longer distance while still getting some expansion.Recoil spring absorbs alot of shock.Comparison was good as the goal of the Sig was to repro a 357 mag at that velocity you chronoed.
Love this series. Hope you do snubbie & 3" semi auto!
Been there with the disk trouble. Depending on the firmness of your mattress, you might find it easier sleeping on the floor. It helped me a lot
Love being able to carry the 125 gr hp and then the 180 gr hard cast for the woods
A minimally expanding 158 gr, like an XTP can sort of do both jobs okay.
@@GunSam I have the bb 158 gr loaded right now lol
Please give the 357 Sig 68gr Underwood xtreme defender a test.

@@markstephens5120 update: I did indeed find a BHP and have a Sig conv on order
Thanks. I don't know the answer personally, but someone else might be able to get on here with an answer.
Thank you for an excellent video!
You're very welcome!
very good video as always! and as usual i will say that even though there are inherent positives and negatives with any cartridge, so much depends on how the manufacturer chooses to load them. few and far between are 357s rounds that are not close to max, and it is designed for shorter auto barrels which why it is such a great round. the great 357m was designed for longer barrels but still has done very well in shorter carry lengths. as for the 40 ... (my conspiracy theory) the ammo manufacturers were paid off to sabotage it to revive the 9
If you could get access to one you could try a direct comparison between 357 revolver and a 357 Coonan 1911 shooting the same ammo. Might be an interesting comparison.
Wow, that .357SIG is like 9x19's beefy cousin
How come the 357 Sig is not more popular?? There’s not many firearms chambered in 357 and the rounds are hard to find!! I have been looking for a P320 in 357 Sig and the only place to find it is the Sig wed site!
Great job Sam, as bad as I want to dislike the sig, is impressive for a defensive cartridge. Not near as versatile as the magnum, but very spot on for its designed purpose. Thanks
