He is the GOAT. No weakness. He is more known for solos like Eruption and Beat It, but as Vai said, Eddie's rhythm is insane. Tone. Fills. Writing. Riffs. Not to mention building the best sounding guitars and amps out of spare parts. Musical notation and tab had to come up with new shit to keep up with Eddie. Marinate on that.
Eddie Van Halen and Jimmy Hendrix & Brian May are all phenomenal guitarists each with immediately recognizable unique sounds. They were guitarists I am old enough to have heard of. I’m sure there are more but these guys I adored listening to. 😊You listen and know exactly who is playing. Amazing.
Pretty humbling to hear some of the greatest contemporary guitarists of the last 75 years opining on Edward and what his contributions have provided to modern music.
Having been to more live concerts than I can ever recall at this point, I’ve witnessed ALL of the great guitarists in person … only one though remains etched in my brain as being above all others live… and that was EVH. You left a Van Halen show knowing you witnessed something both impossible and incredible. Sadly that era is over.
There is a massive difference between playing an electric guitar and actually having fun playing the electric guitar that’s what he was doing. Adopting early locked guitar string systems and asking for improvements, his amp mods, the way they recorded the guitars he was breaking all the rules he was also a very physical guitar musician he was literally using all his upper body to control the guitar.
In that first shot with Brian May, he looks a little like Gram Parsons. Parsons didn't last long enough to join the 27 club. Glad we had Eddie around for much longer. Opiates are fast killers. Stimulants take longer to put you down.
We all know The Beatles had song first guitars but come on....George Harrison. I wonder what Eddie thought when one of the Godfather's of rock music said that.
Where does Eddie Van Halen rank among guitarists all-time?👇
No 1, shared with Jimi
First easy

Have you heard the Starfleet stuff? Eddie Van Halen + Brian May
There’s are literally thousands of amazing guitar players. But very few change the game. Hendrix and EVH were two such guitarists.
Fred Frith is one of my favs too. Approaching the instrument in so many different ways.

Did you ever get to see Jeff Beck live?
"Thanks for reinventing the guitar" - Frank Zappa on Eddie Van Halen
