  • As the spring arrives, I have to change the winter tires with the summer tires. Luckily I have the entire wheel and I didn't had to go to a shop. I do this every season, but this time, someone asked me if I could do it without a car jack. I had no idea, but I was willing to try it. I wanted to show you guys that it is possible ;-)

    I had Citroen cars with hydropneumatic suspension since 1975. (GS, BX, Xantia I & Xantia II Activa and a C5 now). All those suspensions could do that kind of tire change and they could all be driven with three wheels only, as long as you had one of the back whhels out. The most amazing of all was the DS, CX and GS, where the jack (more like a fixed height tower) was fitted in the middle of the side. Those cars were so well balanced that if you had a flat at the front and put the jack, the car would lean its back side and raise the front so you could change the tire easily and vice versa. Once you put the spare on it would come to the center again. It was so well balanced that the air's weight would make a difference!!

    All well and good, but those jacking points are very sensitive in the last C5, I managed to mess them up twice, almost the same way like in this viceo, and the third time was the worst and it needs a body work. Should get around to it soon.
    These jacking points are simple pieces of metal sheet that stick out downwards, and they need only the jack of the car, to perform correctly. I used a hydraulic jack, and rested one of those points on a tripod, and next thing you know, it slowly bent the metal.
    The same goes for jacking the car on solid objects like in this video, like briks and wood blocks. Even wood is hard enough to bend those metal sheet jacking points. I totaly hate them.
    To be 100% sure you don't damage anything, you have to use rubber bushings, and those are not so easy to find, at least in the common market.
    So be careful guys. Always use the jack that is supplied with the car. Don't risk a bent jacking point that may need a professional fix, costing you valuable time and money. And of course, always raise those hydros to the high position when changing a tire.
    (That middle jacking point of the GS is a 100 times better)

      This was the standard procedure for older Citroens with the hydro-pneumatic suspension and, i believe, may still be for the newer cars. What's the tire change procedure as written in the operator's manual?
      The older models had a jack-stand that would be placed at a marked position and hold the car up, instead of your blocks, when the suspension was lowered.

      If you don't have the manual, here's the online version: www.manualslib.com/manual/397817/Citroen-C5.html?page=179#manual
      This link takes you right to the "changing a wheel" page.
      Yes, it does tell you to use the jack after adjusting the car to maximum height.

    • @soultrain8135
      @soultrain8135  7 років тому +1

      I do have a manual, but I never read how to change a wheel. Too bad for me, because I didn't know I had to raise the car to the maximum height. Maybe that's why every time I had a flat tire and the guys raised it, when they put it down, the car was all the way down and I had to raise it in order to be able to take out the jack :)))

    Nice car the C5 x7 its my first C5 with no Hydraulic Suspension so I got the Peugeot 407 style struts. I had a 3 older C5's and a Xantia once. Its well known in an emergency you can do this. But I dont like ruining the side skirts with House Bricks or Blocks. I prefer an Hydraulic Jack it two minutes to use one up and down

    Using this suspension like that indeed may break it. Only the highest and the lowest positions are made for service purposes. Setting car like in this video causes that the hydraulic pomp is constantly working, trying to keep wheels at a good (chosen) level. And it isn't good for it since it has no LDS fluid going through it. After a longer time of sth like this the pump will seize up. Don't use this for Hydractive 3 - it was ok in previous generations.

      E2rd1994 Hello there. Thank you for your comment. I thought the same, that it's not good, but the hydraulic pump was not working. It stopped after it got to that point. I wouldn't have left it on for so long to run, believe me :D I love my car :D

    Negative comments here only from the uninformed. 1960's/70's TV commercial for the BX showed the car at speed racing towards a small gap between two fast moving trucks when a front wheel detaches from the BX. No swerve, no pulling to the side- straight through, no probs. Also showed how the car sat safely on three wheels with raised suspension in order to change a wheel. Think they had to pull the advert following concerns from the 'elf and safety jobsworths.

    Back in the day, the suspension was called hydropneumatic and the high and low positions were strictly for raising the car to change a tire as you demonstrated. The car came equipped with a jack stand. No wood blocks required. Have you read the owners manual?

    I know I can change tires without using a jack, but was not exactly sure how to do it. Now I now. But think I will use the jack anyway, actually easier than to look around for wooden blocks that would fit. But it is nice that it is possible to change tyres without a jack, just in case of emergency or something.

    When you change the weels, don't you have to reprogram the tyre pressure sensors?

    • @soultrain8135
      @soultrain8135  7 років тому +2

      Luís Fernandes Hello there and thanks for the comment. This is a very long story. The winter tires came with the car and the tire prrssure sensors work. The summer tires were bought second hand with sensors. When I first changed them, I went to Citroen here in my city, but they were unable to pair them with the car. They said the problem was with the tool they use to read the frequency of the sensors. I think I went there with this problem at least 5 times and the end result was that they don't know what the problem is, but they couldn't pair them. From my documentation, I found out that the sesnors come with a battery that lasts about 4-5 years and I guess that battery is dead because the wheels are older than my car. Anyways, the TPMS is not working with the summer tires and after about 30km of driving, the service light goes on. I even men a Citroen expert from Bucharest and he also told me the sensors have no batteries, but still he couldn't program them. He also told me that this car could learn two sets of wheels and that winter and summer change shouldn't need reprograming after the first time you program them. If you have any idea what I cand do, please tell me :-D Have a nice day!

      Hello, about 5 years ago, i broke one valve when inflating a tire. I had it replaced at citroën and didn't work too (it was the first time for them!). Then, i went home and they ask headquarters what went wrong, the problem was simple, they had to insert the code that's on the sensor and problem solved! When you change the tires on the rims, take a note and ask citroën to insert that code. Of course you have to do it every time you change the rims... If you try it, let me know if it worked. At another center, they told me that they didn't have to take off the tire, they could read the frequency, but I gess the reader might not work.
      Another thing, treat your suspension with care, it is the best, and needs almost no maintenance, but any malfunction tends to be expensive and hard to solve, since they are rare, and many times is the first time for the technics!
      I hope this be resourceful. Enjoy your fine car ( i do the same always)!

    • @soultrain8135
      @soultrain8135  7 років тому

      Luís Fernandes The guys at Citroen told me that only older Citroens could be "fed" directly with the codes. The car was at Citroen for a few days and I don't know why they havn't tried it themselves. They have no desire into fixing more challenging stuff. I will try removing one tire off a wheel and see what is written on a sensor or maybe even take one sensor off so I can forcely open it to see if it has a battery that I can replace. Thank you very much for the comment. I appreciate any piece of advice :D

    Let me get this right, once you have placed the wooden blocks under the sills, you then lower the height setting which lets the car rest on the blocks and automatically raises the wheels, yes? Vey clever, effective and safe, well done!

    • @soultrain8135
      @soultrain8135  7 років тому +1

      Anthony Xuereb That's exactly what I did and yes, it is safe and easy, but I don't know if the suspension is built to raise the wheels, so, in the future I will not do this anymore. I have a big and good jack, not the original one, and I'll use that ;-) Thanks for the comment!

    which oil do you use in your Citroen and how often do you change it?

    • @soultrain8135
      @soultrain8135  7 років тому +3

      I don't exactly know what brand of oil I use, but I know it's fully synthetic 5W-40. I change it and all the filters at about 15.000 KM even though Citroen recommends changing them at 30.000 because I use the car mostly inside the city and so, it gets a rougher treatment.

  • @Josh-oh2zq
    @Josh-oh2zq 12 днів тому

    What makes the wheels come up off the ground when the blocks are under. You can drain the fluid back to the reservoir, but there's no force up i can think of? It doesnt suck the fluid out, it just has the car weight sweuuze it back to to tank when the valve is opened. So confused

    More, if one tyre punctured or two tires blew at high speed, hydraulic automation instantly helped, not loosing control, and that hapened since early 1955 AD, when Citröen DS 19 was first launched. See youtube DS 19. It is enough.

    • @soultrain8135
      @soultrain8135  7 років тому

      Mirko Zlikovski I didn't try driving without one wheel, but maybe I can. Maybe the car will automatically raise that one and keep it up :))))
      I really like the steering wheel. At first it was a lil bit weird, but now it's awesome :D

    • @mirkozlikovski9553
      @mirkozlikovski9553 7 років тому

      yes.... or better, it "compensates" for missing rear wheel the same way as it keeps leveled regardless of the payload in the trunk... it just stays "leveled" regardless of the missing wheel! the safe way to try this might be to everything you did here, but use the jack instead of the blocks, remove one of the rear (rear!!!) wheels and lower the jack... the car should stand leveled on three wheels :D. just don't drive too fast if you move it!! and be very careful at cornering :D. I tried that on my GS... SCARRY, but fun :D

    • @mirkozlikovski9553
      @mirkozlikovski9553 7 років тому

      o, and fixed st.wheel hub... "next best thing after sliced bread"!!! :) couldn't understand why they ditched that! having all those control buttons on the steering wheel, that DON'T move around when you turn it, is a "gift from God"! this way you can use them the same way as you use the lights/wipers/turn signal stalks... without thinking and looking, cause thy are always on the same spot and just a "thumbs length" away.... sadly, "confection buyers" were scared of such "Citroen idiosyncrasy" and "nurburgring racers" claimed it was in a way at quick wheel turns.... which could be kind od an argument, if C5 was "DTM race car" and not comfort oriented limousine ;)

      For real, original Citröen DS 19, punctând în, surprinse, 1955 AD, had only a portable fix steel jack, not adjustable, conected to a welded pin under middle car body, and then put suspension în lowest position of the automobile. So the wheels in position retractable, and, easy change wheels. It could if necessarly, run on three wheels, one of the rear wheels being missing.
