How 100 Billion Cranberries Are Harvested In 6 Weeks | Big Business

- Опубліковано 20 вер 2024
- Starting in mid-September, Ocean Spray farmers across the Northeast start hustling to harvest 100 billion cranberries in just six weeks. But just as harvest was beginning this year, a TikTok featuring a bottle of Ocean Spray Cran-raspberry juice went viral. Soon, retailers struggled to keep cranberry juice on shelves as millions recreated the video. For Ocean Spray, the sudden demand made a rushed harvest even harder. The company had to hire seasonal employees and increase production. Business Insider visited a Massachusetts bog and manufacturing facility to see how the company's handling demand, harvest, a pandemic, and an upcoming holiday season all at once.

How 100 Billion Cranberries Are Harvested In 6 Weeks | Big Business
I grew up in Carver, MA. If you look at a google earth image, it really is a town full of cranberry bogs. During the winter they fill them so that the freeze won't get to the berries. For a kid, this just meant you had hundreds of outdoor skating rinks to choose from. And if you fell through the ice, you were never more than 1-3' deep in water. It is also a farmer cooperative, so each farmer owns a part of the company. They mainly grow well in the northeast because the ground is sandy and acidic. And those pumps that suck up the cranberries also occasionally suck up a frog or two. They get caught in the screen, but unfortunately, the constant high pressure rush of water and cranberries usually doesn't end well for the frog.
seems like a nice place to live. growing and living in tropical area makes me wonder what snow and ice skating on an actual frozen lake feels like. tho idk if i'll survive since my hometown usual temperature is 16 celsius degree (60.8 fahrenheit) and i sneezed like crazy, lel.
Bruh why did you add the frog detail 😒
@@ozturkoglukagan We were friends with the owner of the bogs directly behind our home. When they would harvest them, he would let me “help” them. I got to stand on the pump trucks upper deck and keep the screen clean. Usually it was just vines, but every now and then, it was the aforementioned frog. As a kid I was just all to excited too participate.

Cranberry juice is my addiction in life . It's no drink on the planet that has its complex makeup . It's sweet but not overpowering , it's sour and sweet but not sour like a lemon . It's like wine . It's nothing on the planet like it .

Leave it in the freezer for a while until it becomes slush and it becomes the perfect hot day snack

Harshit's point is that you can take the net mass of the cranberries, then divide by the weight of an average cranberry to determine the number of cranberries. So if one cranberry is 10 grams, then 907kg divided by 0.010 kg becomes about 90.7 thousand cranberries.

Cranberry juice is delicious. Thanks for the tour OceanSpray farmers. You're awesome!
I grew up in Middleboro and remember when they built the canning/bottling facility in the 70s. They gave tours to the locals and we each got a small can of cranberry sauce as a souvenir. Every fall the sides of the road leading up to the facility were bright red with cranberries that had fallen off the trucks. If we'd had a mind to, we could've picked up free cranberries, but we never thought of it. Middleboro carries the moniker, "The cranberry capital of the world." This brings back memories of skating on the bogs in winter.

Thank you for this video. Love Ocean Spray.
The fact that I've never had cranberry before makes me sad :(
@Lord Waluigi I don't have them near my area :(
Neither have I, gotta keep my eye out for them
You can buy them dried, fresh berries aren’t very good
I have two questions: How come they don't use combine-like machines to rip the entire cranberry plant and have the machine separate the fruit from the rest which would be discarded (that sounds like something that would use less water, especially because they have to use a lot of water again to wash the fruits)?
Also, how come they don't use trucks that can tilt their cargo container only which would spend less energy and time instead of having to lift the entire truck (or perhaps a mechanism within the truck container that will push the cranberries off it)?
For the first one, it would kill the plants and destroy the next harvest.
It’s wasteful to kill the vine when they can live for decades, so they flood the bogs to float the berries. The water comes from a nearby pond and is pumped back to the pond once winter ends. It’s also good since ripe cranberries will float and the bad ones won’t. Essentially imagine cutting down an apple tree to harvest the fruit instead of just picking it
@@boobgoogler beautiful ❤️
Trucks us a standard trailer, if it was specially designed for cranberries it would only be usefully for that 6 weeks of harvest. Tilting the whole semi truck like that is common. And efficient, it's essentially gravity fed, you would have to lift the weight of the berries in some way,
