Aren't you suppose run the pedals through the ns-2 loop (send -> return) for it to be more effective?

No you want the noise suppression IMMEDIATELY from the guitar. I’ve tried it in the loop and for noise gating it’s best immediately from the guitar

I think they're both great. I used the Boss for many tours and it never let me down, but the MXR is also very good. Both will do what you need I reckon!

    Is that a T-shirt or a tattoo ?

  • @SimonSmithGuitar

Yes, as long as the reverb is AFTER the noise gate, otherwise it has a tendency to suck it up.

I'd go with the Boss. I used it in a Hardcore/Metal band for ten years and it NEVER let me down. I expect people on here will disagree with me though, but it's only my opinion. Cheers

One little problems with this video is that the pedals are in the chain at the same time. I can't speak for the MXR, but I know that the Boss will color your signal as long as it's in the chain; it doesn't matter whether it's actually engaged or not. Like I said, I can't speak for the MXR, but the Smart Gate may possibly be more favorable to some players than what this video demonstrated.

    • @zornzon
      @zornzon 9 років тому

The MXR-M135 is advertised as a true bypass, but as you said, the boss will color your sound, because it is not.

Someone else may have said this and if so nevermind- maybe noise gate should be before dirtbox so there is less hum going into the gainbox in the first place where it is multiplied . Also the boss has a buffer and may work better with some stomps than others. Still very informative and I appreciate the comparison !

I owned an NS-2 for years & loved it but I used to run noisy stuff through the loop & this is where it shines. But in this application the MXR kills it, I mean the Boss was near on full while the Smart Gate was on zero & was still better. I find that every noise gate/suppressor has a use with someone.

  • @kierenstein

hi... Thanks Simon... nice video... now... can you please make up my mind for me? I'm a big fan of MXR (they usually have less knobs so more paying and less tinkering) but is it me, or was the boss less drastic... more natural a gate... if that makes any sense at all. All the best.

this is not what these pedals do, you set the threshold to determine at which point the gate cuts in, if you are using a single coil guitar with gain you can adjust it to cut out the noise when you stop playing. I play with a lot of gain and emg 81/60 pickups, i use the mxr to control the level of noise/ feedback. Not all noise is bad imho and if u want it u just turn the pedal off!!

  • @EmilBringsli

In Amplitude and Guitarrig you have your own dedicated noisegates, no need for this one.
It wouldn't have worked, because the dry signal from the guitar is all you would have gated, not the wet signal from the simulated amp or pedals.

Know, a Rocktron is NOT a Noise Gate, but a Noise Surpressor. Threshold shouldnt be set above 12 oClock with this pedal, and you cant expect a perfect cut from a Noise Surpressor, other than from a Noise Gate.

Hey Simon how are you mate, I'm back in the game again, playing with a new band, playing hard rock and I mostly use single coil guitars, it's what I like and I just didn't want to swap the pick ups for their quality but they are very noisy on all my guitars I only have and use Strats and Teles so I tried a bunch of noise gates and finally settled on the NS2 by far the best....for me at least. Good video, though both pedals really need to be tested separately and not wired through each other or to the same amp. All else being equal, the MXR seems to be true to the original tone. While the Boss does a great job knocking down the noise, it does also muffle the tone a bit.

Just thought I'd put my two cents on here.... Bought a boss ns-2 brand new recently, tested it at home at low volume, and thought it was ok. THEN, came to jam with it a couple of days later at full volume, and realized it took all the balls out of my tone. Have since bought an mxr smart gate, and am awaiting its arrival. I will say this though, I've heard boss pedals have gone downhill in quality, and this may have attributed to this, as I have av RV-3 from '94 and it's awesome.
