1) For those that don't know, Boss pedals are buffered so that there is no tone sucking, which is nice. 2) The main reason for the "loop" built into this pedal is that the input section of the pedal circuit senses the original input, then compares it to what is going out of the output jack on the pedal. The NS2 attenuates the noise accordingly. This helps avoid over attenuation (or tone sucking).
Thanks for the info. If one does want to check on the tone to be safe, is it simply a matter of clicking the pedal off or would it have to be completely unwired and removed from the loop to check for tonal changes?
This is THE best video on how to use this pedal effectively, you explained it so well, even I can understand how to use it. Thank You so much, now off to go get me a boss ns-2.
Great video - saved me buying two gates! That seems to be a good idea if your amp is feeding back noise in the preamp before the fx loop, but mine probably isn't gonna be doing that... fingers crossed....
Hah finally someone who uses it like this! Awesome video! Maybe you should mention that time based effects like loopers, as well as delays and reverbs have to be placed after the whole noise reduction thing (between the NS-2s output and the effects return/poweramp) to avoid cutting off your nice delay and reverb trails :-)
+Chris S. Yes that is a good suggestion.. my bad i didnt mention it and focused only on the amp and drive pedal noise. :) time based stuff after noise reduction.
Perfect explanation, and perfect Spanish pronuntiation!!. Dos perfects in one message ;) Thank you for the explanation, it is useful for a newbie in using noise reductors like me :) Greetings from Spain.
Hi. In the third method, how should the gate be powered? from the power supply in the effects loop or from the power supply before the preamplifier. The idea is to avoid the ground loop effect.
I have no fx loop on my amp, but want to use other pedals after the noise gate. What's next? Do I just connect the noise gate to the next pedal input then the last pedal output to the amp? Or is there a better way of doing this? Thanks for the video and any response!
Thank goodness someone has correctly demonstrated/described situation two at 1:50 👍. Just looked at the Boss Manual which to be fair does show this type of situation, but it depicts a Tuner and Compressor in the loop. The manual should show an OD/DIST pedal in the loop; as far as I know, tuners are not known for creating noise 🤔.
@@ThunderMetal-o3n nah, normal (shielded) instrument cables. Speaker cables are unshielded and are only for use when connecting the head to the cab, i.e, power amp out to the speaker.
Hi , I understand the 4CM and the general concept of an fx loop; but I don't understand the difference between using the ns2 input or loop. Because at first he plugged the guitar to the input and it worked, so the pedal took care of the noise of what was before it(guitar pickups iI guess). If that's the case, why the need of a send return? Why not just put every noisy pedal before, since it works with everything coming in anyway, like it did in first example. Thanks
Yes, I feel that a noise suppressor with an effects loop is a big deal. In addition battery is also vital in some cases. There are not many that have both features. The battery deal I love as it does not take up one of my power supplies. Good ob.
Hello Subu Nomo, just got one of these very cheap on ebay (had no noise problem actually, but it was like 30€ shipping included). Thanks for teaching me how to use it! Greetings from germany
Muhammad Haryandi Noise doesn't affect the Note you are playing in terms of tuning. Anyways if you place the tuner after the noisegate it might be annoying since the gate will cut your notes sustain and make it much more complicated to tune your guitar/bass.
ok one question...what should i do when i have an amp with fx-loop and i have your option-3 set up...now i want an distortion-pedal in this version...how i should do this? in front oder after the noise-gate? and should it be in the input-way of the amp or the fx-loop way? 🤔
I love you man ,,, great video ... I'm looking to do some quieting down on the amp & strat ,,, you know the deal ... you give me all three solid methods ,,, you got the best video on this ... thanks 👍👍👍👍. D
Thank You for a "Great" Video my friend. Your time and efforts are appreciated very much. I have a PRS Sonzera 50W Combo (which I love) but the "Hum" was a bit loud with 8 pedals (now 9 with the NS-2). The way you have it connected works great with your setup. It's my 1st Noise Suppressor so I wasn't quite sure of the correct way to do it. Thank You again...
I was wondering how to use the effects loop feature on these. As you know many pedals l have this option. It is hard when you have a floorboard to do this, with many pedals.
For no fx loop + a distortion pedal, how is using the NS2's loop any different from putting the NS2 after the distortion? Is the noise reduction any different?
I have a boss katana 50 mk2 amp that has no fx loop I’m using high gain setting and the built in boost pedal, I have tc sentry noise gate going right into the amp but there’s still noise I have no idea how to set it up without fx loop
Hello, i was wondering if I could use the NS-2 both as a noise gate and a buffer, i mean i know it can do both but my setting is a bit odd (i think). My actual setting is: Guitar -> Wah -> Comp -> Amp (On which i use both clean and drive channels) -> FX loop send -> Chorus -> Phase -> Flanger -> Trem -> Delay -> Reverb -> FX loop return. I have experienced both tone sucking due to long cable runs in the effects loop (my amp's FX loop is not buffered) AND some noise. What I have tried for now, is using a Boss pedal, just as buffer, right after the FX loop's send using a patch cable and before the long cable that goes to my Chorus pedal. It works well with the Boss buffer and I got my tone back, but i haven't got rid of the noise. So hear me out, what if i get a Boss NS-2, and place it right after the FX loop's send (where the Boss pedal is now), then, from the NS-2's send, i run a long cable to my Chorus -> Phase -> Flanger -> Tremolo and back to the NS-2's return, then from the NS-2's output, i go to the Delay -> Reverb and back to my amp's FX Loop's return. I would leave the NS-2 ON all the time. Would that work? Would i get rid of both the noise and tone sucking? In other words, are both the Input/Output and the Send/Return of the NS-2 buffered? I hope I was clear enough Cheers
I tried the last method but then I only got clean sound and I couldn't control the volume or anything anymore. Do you know what I might have done wrong?
Hi. very good video. Many musicians use a TS800 to boost the distortion of our amp (in my case Metal) and that produces a lot of noise. Maybe you should add something like that, in my case I do something similar to the third example that you give, the only difference is that I connect the TS808 to the input of the NS2 and it works quite well. saludos desde Chile
Great and useful video. Your presentation was clear and to the point. Wish you the best of luck on your youtube channel. From an indian brother from the south :)
Can i use the 4 cable method but at the end i go to return at the back of the amp, is it possible? Because i’m using boss metalzone as my distortion pedal which is pre amp.
great video....how about a 4th scenario; what is the configuration when you have an Fx loop on your amp, and you are using the NS2 with a distortion pedal? thanks!
Can someone explain to me why you don't plug the output of the pedal into the front of the amp and the send/return of the pedal into the fx loop? For me it makes much more sense.
Hey, can you please explain what I should do in my situation? I use an overdrive pedal in front of my amp (5150 III combo 50W, with an effects loop) I want to utilize the NS-2 to reduce the noise from the pick-ups, pedal and pre-amp. Is this possible? So basically situation 4: Onboard amp FX-loop, using amp and pedal gain)
I'm trying the 3rd method (4 cables) through my Laney IRT Studio, and using the Noise Reduction in Line6 POD HD500. It didn't work as I'm trying to switch channel in the IRT Studio from Clean to Lead (using amp distortion) it stays on Clean channel. Exavtly following your instruction on 3rd method. Is it didn't work if like this, when I'm using the noise reduction from the multieffect processor like HD500?
The loop on the NS-2 creates a circuit within itself where the objects placed inside it are expanded. The NS-2 reads the guitar signal at the input and gates at the output using the 4 wire method. It is also a stomp box pedal with limitations, I’ve experienced problems isolating my heads preamp in combination with an over drive and compressor (keely pro into moog mf drive into amp isolating with ns-2). The 4 wire meathod is great for isolating something like a gain stage before an amp if you’re running something else in between that and the amp. It’s very hard to find a proper explanation of how the NS-2 loop actually works, hope this helped some people who wanted to know a little more in depth of the operation of it. As a side note there is a circuit within the NS-2 which filters noise from sound which can only be accessed in the loop so that is the real benefit of using it on top of being able to use a single gate for an isolated circuit instead of one at the front and one at the rear like some guys tend to do.................... for some reason.
Okay.., but how does this work with distortion pedals? The noise gate should be connected with overdrive, distortion and fuzz pedals, but "they" say those pedals shouldnt be in the fx loop but directly into the amp. Help!?
he definitely knows how to set up that pedal. this is so helpful. Thanks a lot !!!AND recently I bought cheap noise gate which have two knobs ( output & sensitivity) and two jacks (input & output)here are the questions :1. where would you put the pedal ( my amp has FX loop)2. Your video maybe 7 years old but it’s the first I’ve seen that clearly demonstrates the loop method. Thank you Subu
Watched this video about 10 times because I always forget how to do this. Thanks for making it.

Awesome video! Most people on YT aren't showing method/situation 2 of your video and I think that's very useful for amps with no fx loop.

I found adjusting the 2 knobs correctly made my sound great without playing with more cords
This will come in handy as my amp has an effects loop. Thanks a lot.
Thank you. I needed method 2 and went through 3 or 4 other videos before finding this. Much appreciated!
I have those same Planet Waves cables, bought about 14 years ago and never had an issue. Solid choice

if its a delay, put the noise reduction after it. if the delay is the first of your modulation efects, you will be fine.

Thanks for the valuable info to help a noisy amp appreciate it my friend
