Sir Tom !! I was such a fan that, eventually,I went to The Doctors about my obsession. I said to The Doctor: "Doctor,2 days ago,I could not stop singing "Delilah", then yesterday all I did all day was sing "The Green Green Grass Of Home" and today I have been singing " I'll Never Fall In Love Again". Is this common,I asked him? Well, he said, It's Not Unusual......😀

We saw Sir Tom live in concert about TWO WEEKS AGO, and when he tore into this one the room went nuts. At 83 years The Man has still has that cannon of a voice. Great show. Catch him if he comes near your town.
The Latin rhythms in the background could be a reflection of the Latin influence popular at that time (Herb Alpert, Brasil 66, Tito Puente, Trini Lopez) or the fact the story is comparable to that in Bizet's Carmen.
I guess this is a murder ballad, very popular in Mexican/Spanish culture, where crimes of passion are respected. Not that the singer isn't going to meet his doom. But then there's The Green, Green Grass of Home. The real Sir Tom is a true gentleman who married his childhood sweetheart as remained faithful to her throughout her life.
Tom Jones was not just a member of the club, he was the president for a long time. Not only did they drop but they ended up on stage. And he was known as a one who could not resist temptation, in a manner of speaking.
Back in the day a pinkie ring was not unusual, many men wore them, smoked a pipe and wore a sweater, it was a long lived fashion trend. As for his singing, he is welsh, from Wales in the UK. Practically everybody can sing there, it's genetic. His forebears worked hard in the mines, he works very hard as a singer. He was still touring when the pandemic came along.
Tom Jones had many famous fans, among them: Elvis, Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, But one famous Tom Jones fan that might surprise you is Iron Maiden lead singer Bruce Dickinson, who also performed this song with his solo band. And YES, he sang it seriously, not as a parody.
He's so good he makes you forget that you're singing along to murder😱 fyi, Britt, did you know he does a duet with Dolly Parton? (Green green grass of home)
I can't forget an interview I heard with a singer asking what the weirdest request he ever got was and he said "A couple wanted me to sing Delilah at their wedding...."
Saw Tom last night his voice was still great. He did this song and it was better than ever. He did looked and move every pit of his nearly 83 years. His band was excellent, but scaled back from when I saw him in the past. You could see all of his 55 plus years of experience.
I was in the UK the summer of 1968 and the me and the family I was staying with in LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND, went to the south of Wales to stay at a Holiday Camp for 2 weeks.(by the way BRITT, will you EVER do any REACTIONS to THE BEATLES...PLEASE?). Back to my story.....The pub that was on the premises of the Holiday camp, would play "Delilah" a lot because it had just been released and was a big hit. Not only that, Tom Jones is a "native son" of Wales. SO, every time I hear "Delilah" I am REMINDED of our 2 weeks in Wales at that camp, and EVERYONE in that pub, INCLUDING ME, would sing that chorus at THE TOP OF OUR LUNGS, while swaying back and forth holding up the glass of whatever we were drinking!! It's a FAVORITE MEMORY of mine on that trip!!
Sir Tom Jones is actually touring on your side of the pond at the moment, I'd suggest you go and see him live, he's 83 next month he's two new hips, but sounds the same, and yes you'll hear the old songs but many you've never heard, his last album put him in the record books for the oldest person at 80 having a number one album, he doesn't disappoint, nor does his friend and Welsh counterpart Dame Shirley Bassey both been in the business since the 1960's neither take themselves too seriously but are worldwide Stars which is a overused word and should only ever be used for such people who deserve it
Yes mariachi, and I believe you are correct about the circus sounds playing to the spectacle of it all. It also reminds me of opera with the storytelling and the building, swelling notes. And back in the day it was not unusual for people to carry knives.
Hey Britt, so glad you covered Tom jones on your podcast. I think you might really enjoy Tom Jones singing I ( WHO HAVE NOTHING) on the Raquel Welch TV special in 1970.
Tom Jones had a musical variety tv show back in the 60s where he did a number of memorable duets which are on YT. He does “Raise Your Hand” with Janis Joplin that is absolutely epic!
Tom Jones is one of the greats and had some great hits. He is still singing and his voice is still great. That was a lot of "greats" but he deserves them.
The expression on your face as your swaying along with his voice then the lyrics,"... She stood there laughing...." and you still were not suspecting the next line, "...I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more...." and you looked like you were thinking what did I just hear?!??
You are amazing! The dramatics, girl, this is my favorite reaction channel on youtube! Love that you appreciate the pioneers of cool and talent so much! He does Sang!

I remember this song from when I was a little kid. It was the era of the Beatles, the Stones, Procol Harum, the Moody Blues, Janis, Jimmy and so many more. Our parents told us regularly that we were listening to music for savages. Well 50 and some years later, this music is still listened to and liked. Maybe not that savage then...

They banned this song at the Welsh Rugby game because of the lyrics as the PC people didn't think it was appropriate, but the song they next played was Bohemian Rhapsody that was OK you know the one, mama just killed a man, put a gun against his head... you know the rest.
Awesome reaction and all the times I've heard that song, I heard it about 2 weeks ago and it hit me how Morbid this song really is. Good tune though, God Bless!
Mariachi yes I hear it. The boy can sing with power like it’s nothing. Pipes for any occasion this one. He’s gonna make you a believer. Oh sister Deliala she not be toxic, she just be some one who go after what she want. But in this case she paid the price. The word is heat.
The mariachi band has always been a bit of a mystery, even to Tom Jones himself in interviews ~ but I suspect it's because 1) this is the height of Ennio Morricone and the Spaghetti westerns, which used a lot of mariachi type instruments and sounds ("Once Upon a Time in the West" is literally the same year as this recording, so very much the sound of that specific year) + 2) we're back in a time where countries still only had vague notions of each others cultures and traditions, so Mexico was just thought of as "exotic and dramatic and a bit dangerous"... so... that kind of fit with the telenovella feel of this song... no other reason, no deeper meaning, just another flavor in the spice rack.
FYI he is card caring REAL member of the PDC his card number is #000001 ... literally. He use to do concerts and the band would bet on how many panties would actually be thrown by the ladies in the audience onto the stage during the stage.

In the first place lady, Tom Jones has a beautiful voice. By making fun the way somebody sings is stupid. Especially when they are singing a very sad and tragic happening. By you making faces and mimikingvthe way he sings does not help anybody at all when he has a message, a lesson that is bery, very important. Whether you are a guy or a girl, when you mess with somebody's affection, with their heart and love that they feel inside for you is wrong. For crying out loud, "Grow Up"! Only Tom could make a woman throw over 100.00.00 worth of jewelry out a car flying down the highway, she was pissed....LMAO. Tom singing about being betrayed is kinda funny, but it doesn't take away from his talent for sure. You need to hear him do "Green, Green Grass of Home".
Sir Tom still has an incredible voice at 82. This is possibly the alternative welsh national anthem! They sing it at sports games
Not anymore. I think it has been banned now.

His voice was so powerful he broke numerous microphones..
So powerful a voice, he left nothing back to the ultimate expense of his vocal chords.
But his voice is still fabulous. He wasn't destroying it with these performances.
