  • A bad back needs stability. In order for you to provide the stability that it needs, you have to know how to brace your core. I made this mistake for a big chunk of my life not only in the gym but doing daily activities such as walking, running, mowing the grass, chores you name it.
If you're dealing with back pain I can't stress this enough. Stop what you're doing and learn how to brace properly. Keep in mind that different activities require a different level of bracing.
For Example: Bending to pick up your gym bag vs bending to grab a 50lb bag off the floor require a different level of bracing. You wouldn't brace your core to pick up a pencil the way you do before you lift a 100lb piece of lumbar into the back of your truck.
Tune the intensity of your brace to fit the activity. You don't want to brace so hard it causes more pain to your lower back.
Check out the video to see the common mistakes we make when it comes to sparing our lower back from constant pain.

Wow! Thank you for the examples cause people show how they brace but it’s hard to have an idea when your watching over how it should feel or expect to feel. Bracing and taking a deep breath is clearly different and I was thought to take a deep breath for the longest time. I am newbie here. Thankfully I haven’t had back problems… yet. But doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt here and there at times.

Perfect explanation. I watched videos about bracing before but ended up injuring my lower back three times. I only recently realised I was doing it wrong like you do at 00:50.

I feel like when I brace I get back pain but when I don't brace my back is fine!
Why would that be the case?

Aren’t we supposed to take in breath and then brace while squatting

Yes in high weight situations that is the best technique.
