The Wellerman - Sea Shanty (Instrumental) | Katy Adelson

- I have had a lot of requests to play an instrumental version of "The Wellerman" and more "pirate music," so here is my attempt at playing an instrumental version of that song! Sea Shanties are great! I added the tunes Dunmore Lasses and Ievan Polkka, too, because they are fun and seemed to somewhat fit the vibe. I played it in C-minor, which I think is the key signature that Nathan Evans had sang for his version. His version is great! :)
"Wellerman" is a New Zealand sea shanty about a whaling ship of sailors hoping a supply ship, the "Wellerman," will come.
It could be that Wellerman refers to the Weller Brothers, of Sydney, Australia. They were ashore-whaling company in
New Zealand in the 1830s and 40s.
Lyrics:
There was a ship that put to sea,
And the name of the ship was the Billy of Tea
The winds blew up, her bow dipped down,
Oh blow, my bully boys, blow.
chorus: Soon may the Wellerman come
And bring us sugar and tea and rum.
One day, when the tonguing is done,
I'll take my leave and go.
She had not been two weeks from shore
When down on her a right whale bore.
The captain called all hands and swore
He'd take that whale in tow.
Before the boat had hit the water
The whale's tail came up and caught her.
All hands to the side harpooned and fought her
When she dived down below.
No line was cut, no whale was freed;
The Captain's mind was not of greed,
But he belonged to the whaleman's creed;
She took the ship in tow.
For forty days, or even more,
The line went slack, then tight once more.
All boats were lost (there were only four)
But still the whale did go.
As far as I've heard, the fight's still on;
The line's not cut and the whale's not gone.
The Wellerman makes his regular call
To encourage the Captain, crew, and all.
I've put this version in the creative commons. I try to put my music in the creative commons when I can. I hope that it can help inspire others to make some art!
Thank you for watching, and I hope you have a good rest of the week! =) Please stay safe!
~ Katy

Thanks
Salivili hipput tipput täppyt äppyt tipput hilijalleen... Ievan polkka is a good start to finnish folk tunes... There are a lot of them I'm sure you'd like.
Que beleza!
Well, if an ocean isn't handy nearby, a mountain lake will fill in just fine :) Cheers!
Love your latest video Katy. Wasn't that Mountain water cold??? Brrrr.
Back in the day when I studied film we used a Bell and Howell 70dr 8 mm movie camera. When we needed to set critical focus we would pull out a measuring tape and then just dial the distance into the lens. Modern auto focus lenses no longer have those markings, which is a shame.
It was a bit on the chilly side… yeah lol… I wish lenses still had those markings!!! It would be so much easier for solo video makers! 👀
Now how did you know that rock was out of place? I don't know how I missed that. I'm slipping in my old age I reckon.
You are a multi-instrumentalist!
Hello Katy. I may be the only fan that is from Canada. I'm wondering where it is you are. It looks a lot like the Canadian Rockies in Alberta. It's a good video.
Oh my goodness! You look so cute! ❤️ I love the skirt!
Thank you so much!
Greeting from Türker We love u
👍👍👍
Bravo! 1:21 or 2:46 will be an oil painting soon. Thanks
💯🔥🔥🔥👍🏿
Lovely arrangement Katy. What tin whistle did you play? Was it a C minor whistle , and what brand, and is it tuneable? Sounded like you played the cello too, but we didnt see it. I dont blame you for not wanting to get your cello near the lake. I've been messing around with my childhood viola by putting octave strings on it and using it as a chin cello. Have you ever tried one?
@1:30 - Levan Polka
More sea shanties!
👏 Bravo! 🤗 BTW: It would be nice, sometime for a future cover, to juxtaposition three instruments: the tin whistle, the concertina and of course the violin. 👍 😊 🎻🎵
Thank you! 🙂 I’ll have to learn the concertina! 🎵🎶🎵🥰
@@KatyAdelson Hi Katy - You're very welcome. With your ability for music, you'll have no problem at all learning the concertina, especially the 20-button concertina which only plays in two major keys: C major and G major. The 30-button concertina, on the other hand, is fully chromatic. But that shouldn't be a problem for a person of your musicality. 👌 😉
Keep up the great work. You're an inspiration to tens of thousands who subscribe to your channel. 😊 🎵 ❤️
Hi Katy your video very nice. Good with the tin whistler. The melody has the sound of a typical pirate music. That lagoon seems very big. What is the name of the lagoon? Was the water very cold? I would really like you to make the Blarney Pilgrim video one day. Be fine Katy. Thanks for your video.
Thank you! The location is Twin Lakes in Colors! Blarney Pilgrim is a great tune! I do want to make a video with it. 🙂
I would very much like to here you play a new Irish jig Katy
I don't know what is the song but tunes is a beautiful any way I am also violinist sure I will try it
Katy i have a request for you.
Can you play (toss the feathers)? Pls pls???
And Cool's reel too? You haven't played that popular tune before pls??
Nice ! Another Sea Shanty. I have been wondering if another Sea Shanty would come along.
Sure enough you surprised me with The Wellerman! This one has a nice upbeat tune to it.
Foot taping music!
On another note, your home page is very professionally done.
Nice light balance, color, and details look like they were done by a professional.
One detail missing is NO Email this time!
Suppose I have a question about Time Signatures. That does relate to the Violin, but Piano uses 2/4, 3/4(Waltz), 6/8(Compound Time). I have seen strange Time Signature like 12/8, and other strange time. Is 2/2 used in Violin, or 8/12, 9/8 ? Possibly that would be better left in Email to answer, and not this channel. But no Email address only leaves this space to ask questions.
Sometimes no Time Signature is used, then What then? This is a sample from a Hymnal, or Song Book.
How do I count time with these 'strange' or missing Time Signatures?
You may have covered popular Time Signatures, but what about the 'strange' or unpopular ones I mentioned above ?
I took Piano for 3 years, but I guess Hymnals are for professional musicians, or Orchestra?
That could be a lesson in itself. Covering Time Signatures, if these are used on the Violin.
Thank You, Katy! (Sorry for being so long winded...) When I really open up, I can really talk!
Love it! Nice arrangement. What key of whistle are you playing, a Bb?
Thank you! Yeah, it’s a B-flat whistle. 🎵🎶🎵
@@KatyAdelson Do you by any chance have what you played written down (tin whistle tab, sheet music, whatever) what you were playing on the whistle? I'd love to have a go at playing it 😀
Robert Sephyr sent me from the lampton worm tale
Wellerman i Levan Polka.
Sea shanties do make for a great tune on the fiddle. This was very good, where was this shot at.
I Wonder the same thing. very nice.
Thank you! It was recorded at Twin Lakes, Colorado! 🌸
Looks a nice place where performed that tune darling.
@@KatyAdelson
Never been there. It looks like a great way to spend the day. Have a great weekend Katy.🙂
wow
al flo market dwaigns
I assume that's a B-flat whistle?
Yeah, it’s a B-flat whistle. 🎵🎶🎵🎶🙂
Now we need a tutorial
Well, first you have to put the stone in the right place...
Could you tell us what lake that is ? I assume it is in Colorado.
It’s at Twin Lakes, Colorado. It’s a really pretty place! 🙂
@@KatyAdelson Thank you, it is very beautiful
Again, refusing to clothes shop at Wal-Mart still working for you obviously. Lol That water had to be freezing. Tom
This broke my roblox
That was thoroughly enjoyable! Fortunately, I didn't get those songs stuck in my head again... Well, only because I already have a waulking song stuck in there already. (Mairead nan cuiread as done by Mrs. Kate Nicholson of South Uist, while she and the other ladies were waulking the tweed. ua-cam.com/video/0CmGJ5dwBuk/v-deo.html)
I love this!! Thank you for sharing! 💜
Thanks. So, do you pay your twin sister or do you pocket the money yourself?
Thank you for listening! I don’t have a twin or a sister - it’s a video editing trick. 🙂 I also currently do not earn money on this video, so no one is pocketing anything.
